Garmin - 4th season Giro d`Italia
tmobile
I believe that Fuglsang can bear that one top5 if it does not have any problem. Another thing is that it could improve positions... that would be already a little more complicated.

Certainly, it is incredible to Evans. Nobody can win him!

Good Luck roturn!

Thanks. Evans was indeed super strong and Fuglsang just not strong enough in hills to be a podium contender in these races.

Tirreno - Adriatico Stage 7
San Benedetto del Tronto

A final time trial of just 9km. Fuglsang probably lost the chance to get the podium on the 2 hilly stages, where Ginanni and Gasparotto were too strong. And with Wiggins just being some seconds behind but the top favourite today he might even lose his top 5. He really needs a perfect day here.

Taylor Phinney is our third time trialists today after Meyer and Bobridge, who both entered the top10.
Phinney with the best time of these 3.

Langeveld is a prologue specialist, so this length suits him. 8s faster than the American.

Boasson Hagen was expected to be a bit better in the hilly stages. At least his time trial is good today. Same time than the Dutch

Westra was also a pre stage favourite. But he is 3s behind the duo.

Sagan became stronger and stronger with every stage and had some bad luck yesterday, when Evans overtook him on the last meters.
Just 1s behind the leader.

Vaugrenard already has a good form as shown here. He must now keep this until the Ardennes, where he is surely a top10 rider.
New best time by the French.

Wiggins destroys all times and will probably enter the top 5. He even overtakes Ginanni with this ride.

Fuglsang had a weak day and was even slower than Gasparotto and not fast enough to overtake Ginanni.

Evans shows his form once again. 2nd and just behind Wiggins. The 2013 winner of Tirreno Adriatico. Well deserved.

With so many top time trialists in our squad we had a pretty disappointing day. Fuglsang`s 6th overall is nice but could have been better after the 5th stage.

Too bad Wiggins passed you and you couldn't overtake Ginanni. 6th is still good!

A pity Wiggins overtook you. But sixth isn't nothing. And you rated Wiggins 5 stars before the Tirreno started, and Fuglsang only two. So, eventually, it stays a good job. Best wishes in advance for April!

6th place is a good overall resultWink
and it's nice to see Wiggins actually win something in PCMWink

roturn
Thanks. 6th is fine for me actually.
Wiggins is a a beast in my career. Mountain and time trial within the best. Just his hill stat could be a bit higher and he would be a GC candidate. So he is something between podium and top5.

Before Milan San Remo a small race at first. Just a short report this time.

Lots of cobbles in this classic but most of them are in a short downhill section. So not that selective.

Haussler will be top favourite here. Also Maaskant, Vansummeren and Boom must be counted as favourites. Especially with some luxury team mates like Van Der Velde and Phinney.

A group of weak cobblers attacked and was allowed to create a small gap of maximum 3 minutes.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_Mar/nokere_4.jpg
Garmin was controlling the peloton from the start and just had short support from Skil for Veelers.
So the peloton splitted more than expected and some decent cobblers were already left behind.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_Mar/nokere_5.jpg
With 6,5km to go Veelers and Vanspeybrouck attack. Behind Boom, Vansummeren and Maaskant are preparing the sprint for Haussler and don`t follow this move.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_Mar/nokere_6.jpg
Big mistake as Veelers was strong enough to win the race with some meters to Haussler as 2nd.
Could have been a nice win for us.

And nice to see Veelers winning as well.

Well... nice Veelers victory, although it was taking from you the 1st position. Nevertheless it is a good result with Heinrich.

I hope in the Clasicísima you have slightly more of fortune. A greeting!

And when you had looked at my story, you had known that Veelers would attack a few km before the finish in Nokere Koerse Wink

Thanks for the comments. Veelers was a pity as I had a great chance there. But 2nd is still good.

@dienblad: Unfortunately I have less time than usual for following all the stories. I check your Monster story from time to time but haven`t seen the Nokere-Koerse report. Will try to re-read it later. Wink

One of the biggest classics in cycling and the first monument of the season.
Almost 300km with some hard hills to climb but actually it belongs to the sprinter classics.
But puncheurs proved in the past that they always have the chance to win the race, too.
It`s not the most famous race for Garmin as they regularly fail here but hopefully this will change this time.

Garmin`s riders didn`t even entered the top30. Haussler and Goss were supposed to do well but couldn`t find a good position. On a new route this year with wider roads they hope to do better.

Haussler and Goss are surely our two leaders here. Both of them are fast sprinters and good over the hills. Also Vansummeren, Boom, Maaskant or Felline are good riders for these classics.
Kreder will be a solid helper, while Roche is still in the training phase.

All big names are here. Next to almost every top sprinter in professional cycling many great puncheurs like Gilbert, Cancellara, Cunego, Scarponi, Vansummeren, Flecha, Gasparotto, Ballan, Riccò, Gesink or Rodriguez are here for some late attacks to fool the sprinters.

cunego59
Really looking forward to MSR! Always a nice race, and you have a terrific squad, good luck!

Pellizotti2
Strong Garmin squad here. Hope you do well this time, would be deserved after the bad luck last year.

Thanks Pellizotti2 & cunego59.
As I have some time just now I bring the report directly after the preview. Wink

Milan San Remo
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_Mar/MSR_1.jpg
300km with the hardest part being the final with some hard hills. With a too high pace the pure sprinters will have some problems to follow the puncheurs.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_Mar/MSR_3.jpg
A first breakaway group is formed after lots of attacks.
Sesma (Euskaltel), Guardini (Farnese Vini), M.Velits (HTC), Kruijswijk (Saxobank), Pelucchi (Geox) and Marzano (Lampre).

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_Mar/MSR_4.jpg
Katusha (Hushovd), Sky (Bennati/Hagen) and RadioShack (Greipel/Ventoso) are doing the pace behind. Obviously they are happy with the group and allow them to create a proper gap.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_Mar/MSR_6.jpg
The break reaches the Passo del Turchino with an advance of more than 8min. It will take some time until they are caught again.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_Mar/MSR_7.jpg
But on the other side of the pass reaching the sea, it`s Leopard working hard for Cancellara as all their "sprinters" are integrated in the working riders.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_Mar/MSR_8.jpg
Alessandro Ballan with some bad luck. He punctured but good for him that he can come back soon.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_Mar/MSR_9.jpg
Also Liquigas for Gilbert are doing lots of work now and the gao becines smaller again. Not looking too good for the breakaway group, but this would have been a big surprise.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_Mar/MSR_10.jpg
Climbing the Le Manie with 6km and a bit more than 5% in average the group is still ahead.
The sprinters meanwhile must take care to stay in the peloton here as splits are dangerous.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_Mar/MSR_11.jpg
And indeed a splits happens on top of the climb. Bad luck for the later groups as they have to spend some energy now.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_Mar/MSR_12.jpg
Also bad luck for Greg Van Avermaet. On the rainy descent he crashes pretty hard but can continue the race.
The weather conditions could surely be a bit better.
Even worse a 2nd crash with Cherel and Cunego. The Italian has to abandon the race. Let`s hope that his injury is not too bad and he can perform well in the Ardennes and the GT`s.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_Mar/MSR_13.jpg
First puncheur attacks. This comes even earlier than expected.
Breschel (HTC), Westra (Rabobank), Pozzato (Lampre) and Rast (Shack). Quite surprising that two hillier sprinters already attack.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_Mar/MSR_14.jpg
While Westra is joining the former breakaway, the other 3 late attackers are leading the race now ahead of the peloton.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_Mar/MSR_15.jpg
Starting with the first smaller hills in the race final, the Garmin riders are still attentive and in the first third of the long peloton.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_Mar/MSR_16.jpg
And before the real hills are coming the 3 attackers are caught again. Who will attack next?

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_Mar/MSR_18.jpg
Astana has two high bets for this race. Rojas is a top class sprinter and Gasparotto showed a great form in Tirreno Adriatico and must be counted to the top favourites here.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_Mar/MSR_19.jpg
Coming to the Cipressa without new attacks. 4,5km and almost 5% in average. With such a high speed many riders will struggle that late in the race.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_Mar/MSR_20.jpg
Especially Liquigas without real sprinter is working hard now to bring Gilbert in a good position, while the Garmin riders still do well in the background.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_Mar/MSR_21.jpg
Next attacks with just one hill to come. Langeveld (Saxobank), Ignatiev (Katusha) and Italian Ballan (HTC).

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_Mar/MSR_22.jpg
Seeing this dangerous move Maaskant and Vansummeren are also coming to the front working hard for Haussler now, who proved to have a better day than Goss. Also we decided to go all in for our sprinter.
Cancellara himself is working for Leopard meaning that the pace is incredibly high with 3 first class cobblers doing the work: Cancellara, Maaskant, Gilbert.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_Mar/MSR_23.jpg
Cancellara and Gilbert are also powering on the final climb. The Poggio with 3km and 5% in average is already not the easiest climb that late in the race. But with these two riders pulling it`s almost impossible not to struggle.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_Mar/MSR_24.jpg
The peloton is long stretched now and Gilbert doesn`t seem to get tired. Still doing hard to get rid of the sprinters.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_Mar/MSR_25.jpg
And he is doing very well. Many sprinters lost contact. Unfortunately for us even Haussler was not able although he felt pretty strong...?
So no Garmin rider in the first group of ~15 riders.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_Mar/MSR_26.jpg
Garmin is one of the bad luck teams now and try to come back but this is hard within the last descent and the short flat part before the finish.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_Mar/MSR_27.jpg
And with 2km to go they couldn`t bridge the gap and so Haussler, Boonen, Cavendish, Breschel, Davis and all the others just sprint for the 17th.
Another disappointing Milan San Remo for Garmin.
Definitely not my best race as I always fail here, even with top favourites. Wink

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_Mar/MSR_28.jpg
In the first group Gilbert is still pulling from the front with Cancellara being in a perfect position.
But also some sprinters are in this group. Best probably Bennati. But also Boasson Hagen, Pozzato, Gasparotto and Van Avermaet are fast men.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_Mar/MSR_29.jpg
But this was an easy win for Danielle Bennati. Surely the biggest win of his career. Nobody was able to challenge him on his home ground.
Cancellara and Gilbert, who were doing most work in the final 15km even finished on the podium.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_Mar/MSR_30.jpg
In the later group Boonen wins the sprint ahead of Gavazzi and Haussler. Nice podium, just a group too late...
Top 20 in this race. Must have been a new record by me. Embarassed
