EPIC - Giro d'Italia 2013
knockout

Hmm, one bad day from Porte, that's all that Hesjedal needs for a Podium. On the other hand, he can't afford to drop past Kreuziger and Quintana either, if we want to fullfill our goal...

Great report btw, really enjoyed reading it. Wink

I have a goal here either. What do you think? Will Quintana still end up in the top 3? Rolling Eyes

Stage 19
i1066.photobucket.com/albums/u408/EPICsho/EPIC%20Giro%202013/s19_zpsa9f30c80.jpg

Today’s stage sees 3 great climbs, pressed into a 138 kilometer long stage. You would think it’s a constant up and down but in fact, the long descent from Passo Dello Stelvio and the rather flat section until Val Martello, may make this stage a little easier. It looks like a true decider, however major decisions have already happened. What’s left in the tank, who wants and has the ability to attack?

i1066.photobucket.com/albums/u408/EPICsho/EPIC%20Giro%202013/2014-05-0212_20_11-Greenshot_zps4c567013.jpg

i1066.photobucket.com/albums/u408/EPICsho/EPIC%20Giro%202013/2014-05-0212_21_20-Greenshot_zps39c67b3f.jpg

With a stage that’s only 138 kilometers, of course there are breakaways right from the start. Brambilla (OPQ), Gusev (KAT) and Astarloza (EUS) form the first one at the foot of the Passo Gavia and get a decent lead onto the peloton already of about 4 minutes. In the peloton, meanwhile, there isn’t too much going on. In fact, everybody knows that it’s a long day and so it’s wise to ride the Passo Gavia calmly. Still the first gruppettos form themselves already.

i1066.photobucket.com/albums/u408/EPICsho/EPIC%20Giro%202013/2014-05-0212_23_20-Greenshot_zps936b2112.jpg

The KoM sprint was won by Brambilla ahead of Astarloza and Gusev, although none of the riders really contested in it. Pirazzi and stage winner Fedrigo attacked near the top, but Fedrigo is soon caught and Pirazzi is likely too at the end of the descent.

i1066.photobucket.com/albums/u408/EPICsho/EPIC%20Giro%202013/2014-05-0212_26_33-Greenshot_zpsf96ff55c.jpg

Pirazzi is doing great, and actually got now 4 minutes onto the peloton. He is still behind the BOTD, with about 3’40. He is no directly in no man’s land, but looking at his effort, it’s likely it will cost him a lot to bridge over to the BOTD. But Bardiani of course want to be featured in today’s stage – that goes without saying.

i1066.photobucket.com/albums/u408/EPICsho/EPIC%20Giro%202013/2014-05-0212_28_24-Greenshot_zps6af13003.jpg

i1066.photobucket.com/albums/u408/EPICsho/EPIC%20Giro%202013/2014-05-0212_29_24-Greenshot_zps0fad9a39.jpg

i1066.photobucket.com/albums/u408/EPICsho/EPIC%20Giro%202013/2014-05-0212_30_09-Greenshot_zpsc2cd2cd2.jpg

i1066.photobucket.com/albums/u408/EPICsho/EPIC%20Giro%202013/2014-05-0212_30_27-Greenshot_zpscf45528f.jpg

About 10 minutes near the top of Stelvio. That sounds more than reassuring for the BOTD. The points up top go to Brambilla ahead of Gusev and Astarloza, while Pirazzi is really close by now. They have about 12 minutes onto the peloton, which we can see further down the road. Ah, Stelvio…

i1066.photobucket.com/albums/u408/EPICsho/EPIC%20Giro%202013/2014-05-0212_32_02-Greenshot_zps2f61760c.jpg

A group of 4 riders set themselves apart relatively late, at top of the Passo dello Stelvio. They quickly gain time onto the peloton and have currently a lead of 2 minutes. Fedrigo and Hoogerland are in the break, as well as Jelle Vanendert. And also basque rider Haimar Zubeldia finally shows himself.

i1066.photobucket.com/albums/u408/EPICsho/EPIC%20Giro%202013/2014-05-0212_34_24-Greenshot_zps617d3bc7.jpg

It only took him like forever, but Pirazzi finally joins the BOTD up front. Immediately he takes charges by reeling back in Brambilla, who wanted to make a slip. They are close to the ascent up Val Martello now, and it’s roughly 25 kilometers at that point.

i1066.photobucket.com/albums/u408/EPICsho/EPIC%20Giro%202013/2014-05-0212_35_24-Greenshot_zpsa5beb9ee.jpg

With a lead of roughly 13 minutes, the BOTD heads into Val Martello. No doubt anymore, it’s clear one of them will be the stage winner. Behind them is Group Hoogerland/Fedrigo 10 minutes already behind. Those guys definitely broke out of the peloton too late.

i1066.photobucket.com/albums/u408/EPICsho/EPIC%20Giro%202013/2014-05-0212_36_59-Greenshot_zps66e8e261.jpg

Almost at the very same spot, Scarponi opens up the attacking of the GT contenders. The two Colombians are right at his hweel. There can also be seen Hesjedal trying to follow. And of course, when Nibali follows, Astana refuse to work and the peloton loses quickly its pace and riders start looking at each other, wondering.

i1066.photobucket.com/albums/u408/EPICsho/EPIC%20Giro%202013/2014-05-0212_38_48-Greenshot_zpsb061fb01.jpg

2 groups of 3 riders each now chase themselves. The rest of the other riders is roughly 40 seconds down, where Saxo Tinkoff makes the chasing effort. We hear from upfront that Gusev got dropped by the other riders. Nibali and Hesjedal are working good together, but right now they just can’t close the gap… But it’s only a matter of time.

i1066.photobucket.com/albums/u408/EPICsho/EPIC%20Giro%202013/2014-05-0212_41_12-Greenshot_zps2079f136.jpg

Majka, seemingly on the limit, brings back his captain to Group Nibali, who have caught up to Group Betancur. The peloton consists now of roughly 34 riders. Many stage riders with ambitions for a classification, but the stage win is out of reach for them today.

i1066.photobucket.com/albums/u408/EPICsho/EPIC%20Giro%202013/2014-05-0212_42_21-Greenshot_zps5ede8b69.jpg

Pirazzi on his Cipollini-bike has dropped Brambilla and Astarloza. He is riding clear to stage victory now! 6 kilometers left.

i1066.photobucket.com/albums/u408/EPICsho/EPIC%20Giro%202013/2014-05-0212_43_15-Greenshot_zps0eef2ae6.jpg

i1066.photobucket.com/albums/u408/EPICsho/EPIC%20Giro%202013/2014-05-0212_44_36-Greenshot_zps159a17ad.jpg

There he goes again: Quintana at the 10 kilometers mark, does what he likes best: Attack and ride on his own the full-way through. No one his wheel, no one disturbing him. Nibali is left to do most of the chasing effort with occasional help from Scarponi. It doesn’t take him long until he leaves this shadowy valley behind him, catches Group Fedrigo and just passes them as quickly as he found them.

i1066.photobucket.com/albums/u408/EPICsho/EPIC%20Giro%202013/2014-05-0212_45_56-Greenshot_zps8a191250.jpg

Meanwhile, Pirazzi crosses the finish line and takes the second stage win for Bardiani here! Joy, joy. They really did good and showed that their wildcard admission was the right decision. One of the most active teams and now they win this stage. It wasn't in the most spectacular manner, but Pirazzi rode an impressive solo for most of the day and to then finish it off: A flawless victory for him! But with such a big lead, of course the race still goes on...

i1066.photobucket.com/albums/u408/EPICsho/EPIC%20Giro%202013/2014-05-0212_47_46-Greenshot_zps84c7c06b.jpg

Zubedlia has been the only rider to survive, and he hangs onto the wheel of Nibali here! Betancur is close behind them. Porte and Hesjedal are chasing them, however there’s Scarponi still between Betancur and them. And of course, there’s Kreuziger, also chasing alone. Very small gaps though but the fact that his main contenders are working alone surely favors Quintana right now.

i1066.photobucket.com/albums/u408/EPICsho/EPIC%20Giro%202013/2014-05-0212_49_12-Greenshot_zpsabbb7b24.jpg

Kreuziger with a good come back here as he comes close to Hesjedal and Porte. With only 1.5 kilometers left, he is set to keep fighting for another day for the 4th place. The real question will be how much time he loses on Quintana though. Pellizotti is doing major work in the group back, probably looking to drop Kelderman.

i1066.photobucket.com/albums/u408/EPICsho/EPIC%20Giro%202013/2014-05-0212_50_44-Greenshot_zpsa198859c.jpg

On top of Val Martello, Nibali almost catches Quintana. Zubeldia is still there! A nice result from him but so far he has shown too little to justify the trust put into him. With this result, there also come some changes. Quintana cracks the Top 5 by 2 seconds and pushes Kreuziger to 6th for now. Scarponi also cements his 7th place against his competitors further.

What's left for the last Mountain stage? Position fights may be hotter now than before this stage. Quintana, Hesjedal and Kreuziger are almost within a minute. A bad day and the Giro is basically ruined for Saxo Tinkoff and Garmin-Sharp since they will than miss out on their sponsor goal. Quintana and Movistar don't stand much chance to get on that podium, too much time was lost on non-mountaineous stages. Scarponi, Kiserlovski and Evans are secure in their places, while Kelderman vs. Pellizotti will be a duel we will watch out for on the road to Tre Cime.

For a moment I thought Vanendert would give Lotto their first points there, but no

That 10th place is going to be really close, and I fear the stage might suit Pellizotti better Sad
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

Luis Leon Sanchez
Pellizotti. Why are you not joining attacks or creating them.
20 seconds!!!!!!!! 20 fricking seconds!!!!!

Basso does nothing yet again. He surely will go Froome-style on stage 20. Pfft

Super stage for Pirazzi, Shonak gave him the glory he deserved. Wink

Zubeldia, as you say, finally shows himself. But too little too late. At least he showed a glimmer why he has been a GT contender in the past. Kiserlovski still up there in 8th which is a good result, if he can hang on. Smile

Atlantius
Good podium from Mikel, though I had dreamt of more in this group. Still another podium is good for us!

Also Gorka Verdugo (finally) getting that 20th place. Btw will ther be points for top 20 as were discussed further back?

Edit: And The Rider: Zubeldia is always welcome to come home if he's not living up to your hopes Wink

Despite a good day in the saddle for Scarponi, the rest of the Lampre boys really struggled Frown

Trofimov one place up! Smile
But sadly he won't make the Top 10..

He's suddenly beating Evans so maybe there's hope for the fourth week. Pfft

Another appalling day for us. What the hell is the point of my riders being here when they do nothing. I told you we didn't even deserve a wildcard. Bad day for Oss as well by the looks of it, almost missing the time cut.

I'm a sucker for teams like Euskaltel, it would be great if we could get Haimer to move back to the Basque team ....... as long as Ollfardh doesn't insist that he retires. Wink

No forced retirement coming anytime soon.

Well maybe one. Pellizotti might retire after the 20th Giro Stage.

Christ, i'm so damn nervous. Just one more good stage Ryder, one more.

Really liking the more screenshot based style of reporting. Your graphics are so damn good! Smile

FFS Kreuziger losing two minutes to Quintana? Really....? Tre Cime stage better go well otherwise I will be pretty disappointed.

Ha, piss off. Pellizotti deserves that top 10. He is the old timer taking on the young gun.
