Petronas - Monster Energy; The end of an era
dienblad

Stage 2 from Wanze to Houffalize, 194km long. This time only 2 KOTM-prints, but the last 700metres are very steep with 11.2% average gradient.
img828.imageshack.us/img828/2894/profiel2v.jpg

A group of 11 rides away and although they get a 8 minute gap, they will get caught before the finish.
img593.imageshack.us/img593/7572/11is.jpg

Skil's Bert de Backer does a great job in this sprint in collecting the KOTM-points and winning one Intermediate sprint.
img710.imageshack.us/img710/4218/12kotm.jpg

The trains of Omega Pharma - Lotto, La Française des Jeux and Monster Energy - Ford lead the drag race to the last Mur St. Roch.
img690.imageshack.us/img690/8450/133km.jpg

With 300metres left, it looks like Sep Vanmarcke is going to take the win. But he looses speed....
img717.imageshack.us/img717/8061/14300m.jpg

Reinier Honig (Landbouwkrediet) and Yauheni Hutarovich (FDJ) overtake win and will decide who is going to win. Not! Next to them comes Jens Keukeleire with a great jump and he takes his 2nd win of the year (1st was Nokere Koerse).

Word from the DS: Another win! Very happy, never thought Keukeleire could win with such a steep hill before the finish! Strangely that Honig overtook the lead, but he won't keep it!

Don't know what's wrong with it, I've tried to change it a few times, but it won't work.... So a black number 2 from now on.

Strange, when I delete the colour code, the "2"is in black, but the name is in black with the colour before it..... Really strange... Like [color=#00cc00]Pim Ligthart

Stage 3 takes us from Sambreville to Perwez. It's 205.5km long, but almost flat with only 2 short categorized climbs in it. A day for the sprinters.
img822.imageshack.us/img822/5607/profiel3.jpg

Already 12km after the start of the stage, the riders can sprint for the points ranking and , more important, 6 bonus seconds. I don't know if we were this smart, or the opponents so dumb, but Sébastien Rosseler slowly rode away after the start, got a 30 second lead and took the 6 bonus seconds. This means he is '2 behind leader Reinier Honig now in the GC. Well, former leader.... Pim Ligthart is the only rider in the peloton that wants to sprint for the points and so he gets 4 seconds, which makes him the virtual leader. The last 2 points / seconds were for Leopard's Bruno Pires.
img823.imageshack.us/img823/4048/17is1.jpg

Then 7 riders form the BOTD: Christian Poos (Differdange), Michal Kwiatkowski (Radio Shack), Evert Verbist (Veranda's), Martin Kohler (BMC), Adrien Petit (Cofidis), Kurt Hovelynck (Donckers) and Romain Zingle.
Verbist wins the 2nd IS, in front of Kohler and Petit. Also the 3rd IS goes to Verbist, beating Hovelynck and Petit.
img69.imageshack.us/img69/9804/18isw.jpg

Poos and Zingle divide the points for the KOTM, with Poos winning the first sprint and Zingle the second. Because of this, Romain Zingle is almost sure of winning the KOTM-ranking!
img828.imageshack.us/img828/358/19kotm.jpg

But of course the peloton will catch the BOTD. 4 riders remain in front with 10km to go, led by Zingle. But they don't stand a chance against the peloton. Omega Pharma - Lotto (Dehaes) and La Française des Jeux (Hutarovich) hunt them down. The Monster-guys have saved their energy, thanks to Zingle. 7km before the finish, we have an engroupement.
img695.imageshack.us/img695/1756/2010kmr.jpg

But carnage 5km before the finish! Mickael Delage (FDJ) lost of control of his bike after hitting a backwheel with his frontwheel, and crashed. Only 26 riders could go on without losing time. But there are some important victims. On the left, we see Sébastien Rosseler on the tarmac. GC-leader Reinier Honig is standing in the middle of the road, and is about to crash. FDJ's Hutarovich has crashed over his teammate Delage. Sky's Ian stannard goes down hard on the right side...
img831.imageshack.us/img831/8651/21val.jpg

Only Omega Pharma - Lotto had no difficulties and sets up a perfect train for Kenny Dehaes. Our train has to come from far behind, but luckily Sep Vanmarcke, Pim Ligthart en Jens Keukeleire aren't able to sprint for the stage win.
img262.imageshack.us/img262/1025/221km.jpg

An easy win for Dehaes, his 3rd of the season (2 stage wins in the 5 jours de Dunkerque). Dehaes really needs this win, as he hasn't signed for a team next year. This should happen now! Alexander Kristoff (BMC) gets 2nd, Tom Leezer (Rabobank) 3rd. Jens Keukeleire finishes in 7th.
img3.imageshack.us/img3/103/23finish.jpg

Then we can overview the damage: a big group with Hutarovich, Offredo, Jetse Bol and Sébastien Rosseler loose 1'53. 11 riders have to abandon bacause of injuries, among them GC-leader Reinier Honing (fractured knee cap), Dominique Cornu (fractured shin bone) and Gert Dockx (fractured knee cap). We feel really sorry for especially Honing....

The winner of today:
img594.imageshack.us/img594/6079/26dehaes.jpg

Word from the DS: What a terrible crash. Luckily for us, only Rosseler hit the tarmac. His injuries consist of some skin tears and bruises, but his left elbow is painful as well. I don't think it's broken, but we'll go with him to the hospital for some X-rays, just to be sure....

Nasty crash....Mollema is sneaking around Ligthart.....good luck to defend the lead.

Stage 4, the penultimate stage of the Tour de Wallonie, brings us from Enghien to industrial city Mouscroun. The stage is short, only 151km, nearly flat and is designed for a mass sprint.
img838.imageshack.us/img838/3936/profiel4.jpg

The same happens as yesterday: we surprise our opponents in an early Intermediate sprint, to win some more bonus seconds. Pim Ligthart wins the sprint and extends his lead with 6 seconds, Jens Keukeleire gets second and jumps to the 2nd place in the GC, and Mauro Santambrogio (BMC) gets third.
img717.imageshack.us/img717/7450/27is1.jpg

After that, a 14-man group jump away and creat a maximum lead of 5 minutes. The only KOTM-sprint is won by Daan Olivier (Rabo CT), in front of Kevin Claeys (An Post) and Bart Dockx (Landbouwkrediet). The 2nd INtermediate sprint is won by Bjorn Selander (Radio Shack), in front of Dockx and Claeys. With 20km to go, already on the local laps in Mouscroun, the lead is 1'22.
img696.imageshack.us/img696/3889/2820km.jpg

The breaks get caught about 10km before the finish, and then there goes another shocj through the peloton: a herd of sheep on the middle of the road. Thank God (or the steering abilities of the riders), nobody crashes. Probably there is shoarma of kebab on the menu tonight Grin.
img822.imageshack.us/img822/4224/29schapen.jpg

4km to go, and it's FDJ in the lead. Our sprint train is up front as well, right behind the Omega Pharma train.
img441.imageshack.us/img441/5643/304km.jpg

But WTF is this???? In the curvy last kilometres, FDJ's Gianni Meersman lets himself fall back after making the pace, and hinders the Monster-train! We can't pass him and see a lot of riders pass us on the other side of the road. That's it for today, no chance.....
img38.imageshack.us/img38/6631/312km.jpg

There must be a God, as he doesn't let FDJ win the stage. Yauheni Hutarovich is looking to win, but gets passed by yesterday's winner Kenny Dehaes a few metres before the finish. Justice Angry!!

Word from the DS: So it comes down to the last stage. Th efinish of the 5th stage is difficult, with the Mur de Thuin, pretty similar to the 2nd stage (and we know how that ended Grin). But first I'll go to a meadow and shoot some sheep, I feel like eating döner kebab with some garlic sauce, don't know why.

Some nice results in Wallonie, with your team doing 1-2-3 so far in the GC. Smile As for the Tour, Andy had the great luck to have some not-so-good days in the mountains... maybe next year he'll be able to win? Wink

Really great race for you, keep it up Wink

Great!

Stage 5, the last stage is from Charleroi to Thuin. In Thuin, there are 3 laps on a 12.5km long circuit with in it the Mur de Thuin, a 600m lon climb with an average gradient of 8.1%.
img199.imageshack.us/img199/7969/profiel5.jpg

After numerous attempts to form a breakaway, 4 man succeed in it: Dennis van Winden (Rabobank), Taylor Phinney (BMC), Koen Barbé (Landbouwkrediet) and Tom Stamsnijder (Leopard) take a maximum lead of 2'30.
img37.imageshack.us/img37/8858/35is.jpg

The 4 have become 5, when Ron Dennis (Rabo CT) joins them. Here they climb the Mur de Thuin for the first time. With 30km to go, and 2 climbs of the Mur de Thuin left, the lead is still 2 minutes.
img543.imageshack.us/img543/3449/36kotm.jpg

But again the teams of Monster Energy - Ford and La Française des Jeux work hard to chase down the BOTD. With 5km to go, they are caught and all will be decided in the last climb.
img52.imageshack.us/img52/7059/375km.jpg

Sébastien Rosseler did a great job leading out his team mates the first metres of the climb. Then he hands over to Sep Vanmarcke, who's acceleration is so powerful, nobody can follow. Can he hold it untill the finish, in contradiction of the 2nd stage where he got passed 50m before the finish?
img202.imageshack.us/img202/9976/381km.jpg

Yes, he can! Vanmarcke celebrates his first win of this season! None could endanger his win today. Leopard's Martin Pedersen takes the 2nd position, whereas Pim Ligthart finishes in 3rd and also winning the GC!

Coming month? July isn't even finished! Still 4 races left in July: Ordizia Klasika (already played, report coming shortly), Clasica San Sebastian, Trofeo Getxo and Sparkassen Giro.
Then after a summary of July, comes an update of our agenda. But that's difficult in being a CT-team, you have to wait for the wildcards! We will race the Eneco Tour and the Vuelta. Also got a wildcard for Tour of Poland, but chose not to race it (something with number of racedays....). Further we'll race in Burgos and the USA Pro Cycling Challenge. And of course the Dutch Food Valley Classic, which is organized in my hometown (I went there to see the finish in this year's edition, easy win for Theo Bos).

______________________________________________________________________________

About halfway, the first dangerous breakaway is there. Before, a lot of riders from the smaller Spanish CT-teams gave it a go, but none succeeded. With 88km to go. we see Jonathan Castroviejo (Euskaltel) and Francisco Pérez (Movistar) who jump away on the Alto de Abaltzisketa. When they get a lead of more than '30, we know we have to chase them, because Euskaltel and the Movistar are the biggest opponents today.
img560.imageshack.us/img560/5919/188km.jpg

In the following descend, we catch them again. But the higher pace separates the men from the boys and on the first ascend of the the Alto de Altzo, 65km to go, there are only 37 riders left up front. In this group are 4 riders from Euskaltel, 4 from Movistar and 7 (!) from Monster Energy - Ford.
img594.imageshack.us/img594/5347/2altodealtzo.jpg

But then our shadow-leader crashes! Thomas de Gendt hits the tarmac in the penultimate descend of the Alto de Abaltzisketa, and luckily all the other riders in the leading group could avoid him. De Gendt has no serious injuries and after 2-3 minutes, he can continue his race.
img193.imageshack.us/img193/5641/3degendt.jpg

The bell rings for the last lap of 34km and 11 riders will fight for the win. The leading group consists of: Gorka Verdugo (Euskaltel), Benat Intxausti (Movistar), Markus Fothen (Team NSP), Jurgen van Goolen (Veranda's Willems), Alexander Gottfried, Bartosz Huzarski & Daryl Impey (Team NetAPP) and the Monster-quartet of Andy Schleck, Mark de Maar, Niki Terpstra & Martijn Maaskant.
img838.imageshack.us/img838/4733/433man.jpg

Niki Terpstra rides up the Alto de Altzo with an incredibly high pace, with which he cracks almost all riders. Only Benat Intxausti, and of course Andy Schleck can follow him. Terpstra has a simple order: give it all to bring Schleck in a good position to the start of the last climb.
img822.imageshack.us/img822/5540/518km.jpg

And that climb hasn't even started as Schleck easily rides away from the other 2. Intxausti doesn't even try to follow the Luxembourg rider.
img717.imageshack.us/img717/9665/612km.jpg

Andy reaches the summit with a gap of over 2 minutes to the chasers. There's only 10km left, and there's no doubt that he will win this Ordiziaka Klasika!
img202.imageshack.us/img202/6089/710km.jpg

Andy cruises to the finish and can start his celebrations long before it.
img190.imageshack.us/img190/8425/8finish.jpg

3 minutes behind, NSP's Markus Fothen sprints to the 2nd place, beating the NetAPP-duo of Huzarski and Impey. Maaskant finishes in 5th place.

Word from the DS: Great result from the team. Not only the win by Andy, but also 3 riders in the top 10. I have to be honest to say that the fiels was a bit weak, and that the 2 main Spanish teams, Euskaltel and Movistar, were very disappointing. And especially Euskaltel, becuase this was a race in Basque country.

Easy win for Andy! Looks good for San Sebastian.

There are some World Tour races coming up, and in most of them, results haven't been that good. So I'll race San Sebastian with the hard level, Getxo & Sparkassen on extreme and the Vuelta and probably Eneco Tour I'll start with hard, and when it goes pretty easy, I'll switch to extreme. For sure, next season will be extreme level.

Clasica San Sebastian

As history says, the Saturday after the Tour de France, the World Tour moves to Basque country to race the Clasica San Sebastian. The prominent feature in this race is the Alto de Jaizkebel (8.7km at 5.3%), but the Alto de Arkale (2.3km at 7.4%) with its summit 16km before the finish will be more decisive!
img13.imageshack.us/img13/4388/profiely.jpg

The 2010 edition was won by Spanish Luis Leon Sanchez (then Caisse, now Rabobank). For a strange reason, I feel the need to move to Basque country Wink

Favourites
*** Philippe Gilbert (Omega Pharma - Lotto), Alberto Contador (Saxo Bank - Sunguard), Igor Antón (Euskaltel).
** Andy Schleck, Joaquim Rodriguez (Katusha), Aleksandre Vinokourov (Astana)
* Ivan Basso (Liquigas), Carlos Barredo (Rabobank), Michele Scarponi (Lampre)

Our goal: the podium.

A group of 13 forms the BOTD, and the most known names are Pablo Lastra (Movistar), Steven Kruijswijk (Rabobank), Leandro Bertagnolli (Lampre) and Vladimir Gustov (Saxo). They get a maximum lead of 5'30. At the moment, during the 2nd climb of the Alto de Jaizkibel, the lead is 2'15 with 48km to go.
img835.imageshack.us/img835/2986/1botd.jpg

After the descent of the Jaizkibel, there are attacks out of the peloton all over the place: Contador, Gilbert, Leipheimer, Scarponi.... All try to get away. Because if this, the leaders get caught before the last real climb of the day, the Alto de Arkale. There it's Igor Antón who brings the Basque people in ecstacy, with an attack.
img412.imageshack.us/img412/187/225km.jpg

Only Philippe Gilbert can follow him in his attack and the 2 cross the summit together. But a chasing group with Scarponi and Contador follows at a few seconds. 21km to go.
img607.imageshack.us/img607/5140/321km.jpg

But the 2 get caught, and a group of 19, including Andy Schleck are together in the leading group. On a small hill with about 10km to go, Alberto Contador attacks. Only Antón can follow him, the rest have to pass...
img171.imageshack.us/img171/4954/410km.jpg

In the following kilometres, Contador drops Antón and he has a lead of 18 seconds to the chasing group. In that group, Schleck has settled in the wheel of Philippe Gilbert.
img412.imageshack.us/img412/8995/55km.jpg

The question is if the chasing group doesn't cooperate, or if Contador is too strong for them... Contador extends his lead and in the last km, it's over 30 seconds. During the press conference, El Pistolero would tell that he knew how the girls looks that are in the podium (take a look at the picture of LLS), so he was determined to win the race! Well, you can't blame him!
img571.imageshack.us/img571/9161/61kma.jpg

One week after the Tour de France, Contador gets another great win and wins the Clasica San Sebastian, the biggest one-day race in Spain, for the first time in his career.
img88.imageshack.us/img88/6512/7finish.jpg

Heinrich Haussler (Garmin) wins the sprint for the 2nd place, beating Katusha's Joaquim Rodriguez. Andy Schleck finishes in 7th place.

The winner:

Word from the DS: Contador was too strong today, no doubt about that. And when a group of 18 riders sprint for the 2nd place, you can say that Andy did a good job with his 7th place. He managed to beat guys like Scarponi, Boasson Hagen, Antón and Basso in the sprint. But to be honest, I'm glad he didn't win.... With these girls on the podium, he would be lost for a few days in San Sebastian and we need him tomorrow for the Trofeo Getxo!
