[PT] Evonik - ELKO | 2017
knockout
Thanks guys Grin

Shonak - the hashtag Grin

trek - Oh he has weaknesses. Bad TT compared to many other climbers / puncheurs and mediocre energy stats but I'm hoping that might not harm too much Grin

Abishek - We'll see if the mountain train is strong enough to lead Michel Koch to the annual TDF win goal Grin
Sergis will probably be used a lot as a domestique for Skujins in the hills in his first season Wink

Continuing the talent focus

When the team was founded a key philosophie was to develop talents into riders ready to compete with the bests. This approach has worked very well with many former talents riding in important roles for us and we will continue this strategy by presenting our two newest members of the team:

Kaspars Sergis pbs.twimg.com/profile_images/882281590893760512/000Vslfh_400x400.jpg

We're glad to welcome the next good Latvian climber into our team. He'll be an important domestique for Toms Skujins in the hills while also getting his chance to make his GT debut. A year racing against the world's best cyclists will surely help his development into a better rider!
He signed a minimum contract of 50 000€.

Miguel Angel Lopez speloton.s3.amazonaws.com/pins/2016/08/big/0576168dda3b0dab3dbaf61792194bba.jpeg

*our currently preferred development but no final decision made

Miguel Angel Lopez is our star signing this season. He is one of the most versatile climbers and puncheurs of all neopros and he has all the potential in the world to win it all. We are very excited to follow his development for years to come and he will surely be an important part of any future Evonik success.
He signed a 510,000 € contract.

Very interesting to watch how you predict the future, so much to learn from a post like this for us newcommers

When marking 79 with red for Miguel Angel Lopez is that then an indicator of future training? Pfft

Departures

Yesterday, we announced the arrival of two young talents for the future today we announce the departure of five riders who helped us a lot achieving last season's surprising success:

Maris Bogdanovics
Gediminas Bagdonas
Gatis Smukulis
Andsz Flaksis
Gianni Meersman

They helped a lot in promoting Baltic cycling and we wish them all the best with their future teams!

I don't expect GVA to still be around whenever Lopez will turn great. Just grooming myself a third captain again for the time after Wink

MALs TT stat and energy stats would be better if he was trained as a Stage Racer Wink
Obviously would have loved to sign him myself but congrats on signing him and hopefully for your case he'll prove to be the class rider he can be in future seasons.

I agree that his overall stat combination might be better as a pure stage racer, but he would then max out as one of many. With 79MO/82HI he will be one of maybe 3-4 riders with similar stats in 2020. I would definately take that over making him the best GT rider he can become.

It would take quite a lot of training to make him a real GT contender anyway, so why not make him an instant top 5 threat for the ardennes instead? Smile

because of Skujins...but I'd guess we see MA Lopez on the proposed stat and then see a +6 mountain training over the next 3 years...oh I fear it already Grin

Since people discuss this anyway here's the overview of what would be possible for him:

First of all the three main choices:

HI-HI-HI70768371787373506779797172
SR-SR-SR70817974777677506475766975
Cv1-Cv1-Cv170818069747476506478807170

I think it would be very reasonable to train him the hill way. He would immediately be a top 3-5 puncheur that way with great backup.
Stage Racer de-values his strengths to make him into your every day GT Leader. There are tons of climbers with 75 ACC but 74 TT is still weak enough that you still want to avoid TTs anyway. Imo a bad option as you waste his potential to be unique sth special amongst the world bests stage racers.
Climberv1 looks very reasonable as well and is another option i have in mind.

My currently favoured way:

HI-Cv1-HI70798271767474506678807172

I like this so much because it would still be very strong for the hills from day one but would also be easier to combine with Skujins' season planning. It offers me a great unique rider from the day he's maxed while also giving me lots of future training potential either towards #1 puncheur or fantastic climber a la Cunego.

Other interesting hybrid options include:

Cv1-Cv1-HI70808170757475506578807171
Cv1-Cv1-SR70818071757576506477797072

Once again i can see various reasons why one could go for one of these. Right now I'm prefering one of the other ones but that might change come development.

Sadly, your favored way would be my favored way. I hoped someone less familiar with the stat gain system would get him. Wink

I doubt anyone who spends that amount of money on him would not look into all possibilities of his development Pfft

I think many of the possible teams to sign him would "just" go for the Cv1 solution. Not a bad one, but not maximizing his potential. I see many riders (albeit often at a slightly lower level) being trained in a way I would describe as horrific. Like if Miguel Angel Lopez was trained as a stageracer just to get those extra points in RES, REC and TT.

Havent noticed many examples of this (Arndt, maybe Buchmann are the only ones to come to my mind) but you might be right.

Team Goals Announced

Win Tour de France
Top 3 Milan - San Remo
Top 3 Ronde Van Vlaanderen
Top 3 Paris - Roubaix
Top 5 Team Standings

We're continuing to aim at high goals. After Michel Koch's "narrow" miss at the Tour de France Win Goal 2016 we decided to go for it again. It's still unsure at this point whether it will be Michel Koch once again to try this goal but one thing can be sure: We will have eight riders at the starting line.

Evonik is well known for its strength in the classic. We finished our first five monuments on the podium each and we believe that this is where our riders will belong. Similar to last season we will see Michael Van Stayen in San Remo as one of the pre-race favourites while Greg Van Avermaet will target the Ronde Van Vlaanderen and Paris - Roubaix for us. A podium is the minimum expectation in all of these cases.

This season might be a difficult one for us with a big part of the budget spent on our new super talent Miguel Angel Lopez but that doesnt stop us from being ambitious.
We're aiming for a top 5 position in the team ranking which we narrowly missed last season.

Honestly I think your goals were set in too easy races, as a ProTour team you should be aiming for only the biggest races in the world, like Monuments and Grand Tours. Pfft

Seriously, though, RVV and PR should be pretty sure-fire for GVA, you should have the perfect MSR team but with PCM, who knows? and every good climber you have could win the TDF in their sleep. Pfft

Good set of goals there. Really nice addition to the team with MAL aswell, without losing any strenght compared to last year. Around top 5 again is likely Smile

dev - Thanks Grin
I think the fight for a top five will be very close with many teams looking improved. It will be very close and i guess others will look strengthened more after a training. And i need Van Stayen and GVA to overperform again to get close to a top five. I see myself again as underdog again Pfft

On the Arndt stat gain thing, I'm still mad at whoever chose C2 instead of C1 for his level 3 gain, not sure if it was a disbanding niconico or SN taking care of the FA...although maybe 79mo 78hi would've made him too expensive.
