You shouldn't accept the offer. I know he wanna ride in a good team but if he signs for a continental team that allows him to continue being south-african to the UCI he will be soon in the biggest african team... MTN!!

I took a good few days to really make up my mind about what to do, talking it over with my parents, who in the end would have accepted any decision I made because this was about my future in a sport I love.
Luckily for me, it was a case of not what I knew, but who I knew! A good friend of mine was studying Law at Manchester University, and he looked into the legal side of the UCI Regulations regarding my Dual Nationality, helping me piece together and understand what I could do.
When I was ready, I gave Dave and Shane my response to their offer: I will accept the place on the Development Team riding on a British License, but only as long as I did not have to give up my South African Citizenship in the process. I had never represented South Africa, at any level, in any Cycling Event, so I was not in any breach of the UCI Regulations.
Turned out British Cycling had also been looking into the subject and discovered the same as I did, so it was settled immediately. I signed a 1-year contract, with the option for an extension if I was not able to sign with a Professional Team at the end of the season.
I couldn't have been happier. I was 19 years old, and I had just become part of the Professional Peleton. Furthermore, I was still a South African, and I wouldn't have changed that for the world!

Good twist of fate on his behalf. Now he has a season to show himself without going British |

It turned out that I was the last member of the Development Team to sign for 2013. The GB Coaches had even delayed the announcement waiting for me, so I was a little embarrassed when I found out. Now that everything was agreed, a Press Conference was called for the big reveal. A total of 12 riders had made the team, covering a good range of disciplines on the road.
The Yates Brothers, Owain Doull and I appeared to be the strongest on paper, and the ones who the GB Coaches had high hopes for as the season went on. Timothy Kennaugh, brother of Team Sky's Pete, and Sam Harrison also added some considerable talent to the team.

@all: Thanks for all the comments! Half of the team (Yates Brothers, Dibben, Harrison, Doull and Atkins) were part of the 2013 GB Development Squad, so it made selection quite easy The rest of team are the free U23 GB riders in the DB

The squad headed out to Mallorca for Pre-Season Training, and it was finally time for me to sit down with the GB coaches and plan my season ahead. For some reason, it was only at this stage that it truly set in that I was a cyclist, and I would be part of the Professional Peleton this season. And man, I was so scared.
The training went as well as it could of for Pre-Season, and my legs were feeling good. I was then called in to talk about my Season Goals on the team.
My expectations for the season were really simple. I wanted to peak for the early races in March, before hitting my main targets in May at the Lincoln GP and the early Tour Series rounds. Despite not having much hope for the National Championships, I wanted to go there with some good form, and then finally end the season at the Tour of Britain.
From my discussion with the coach, we were able to put together my schedule for the season, and it really played to my strengths on the road.
Date | Race | Country | 10 Mar | Paris-Troyes | France | 4-8 Apr | Grand Prix of Sochi | Russia | 21 Apr | Rutland-Melton Classic | Great Britain | 27 Apr | Tour of Reservoir | Great Britain | 12 May | Lincoln GP | Great Britain | 16 May | Tour Series Round 2 - Durham | Great Britain | 21 May | Tour Series Round 3 - Stoke | Great Britain | 23 May | Tour Series Round 4 - Aberystwyth | Great Britain | 28 May | Tour Series Round 5 - Torquay | Great Britain | 4 Jun | Tour Series Round 7 - Redditch | Great Britain | 29 Jun | National RR Championships | Great Britain | 30 Jun | Beaumont Trophy | Great Britain | 3-8 Sep | Tour of Alberta | Canada | 15-22 Sep | Tour of Britain | Great Britain |
Returning from Mallorca, I felt really pleased with my early life in the Development Squad. I couldn't wait for my first race and to get this season underway.

Great team and a small, but interesting calendar.
I'm sure you can win the NC, as long as you go in the break. |
