25th place in the Vattenfall Cyclassics is a pretty good result |

Ian: Thanks!
sutty: It was, but also the most he could do in that race.

Too bad he didn't get nominated for the worlds.

Shonak: I was quite surprised about that actually since there's not that many Swedes to choose form and he must have been one of the fittest at the time.
welker: He would certainly have done at least as good as the ones actually selected

2016 Part 4: Free at last?
Finally when October came the team stopped worrying about results completely and gave the chance to a group of us, who didn’t get the chances we deserve throughout the season.
In Münsterland I was badly placed and failed to get in a break and when the sprinter teams started pulling hard they sapped me for all my strength leaving me unable to try chasing the sprint like in the U23 days.
After that disappointment we went on to Italy and Coppa Sabatini. The race that gave me my first pro top 100 last year.
First I tried to get in the main break, but we couldn’t get it properly going so we were reeled in again fairly fast and instead Cort went away. To my luck I was close to the front of the peloton when he was caught leaving only the later winner out in front. With the win gone a hesitation appeared in the peloton. I saw it and used it to get a pretty good gap only to lose almost a minute on the final small hill. Not that it was so bad since I actually got my first ever podium getting placed between Visconti and Rabottini!
I grant you that it was partly due to luck, but it proves that my aggressive spirit can bring me rewards if I keep it up.
Back to reality in Giro dell’Emilia, where I in spite of feeling good were utterly destroyed when the Italians started pacing on the final hill. No excuses here, I just wasn’t strong enough…
I got to be in the main break of Paris – Tours, but we never really stood a chance against the sprinter teams, who set hings up perfectly for Sagan, Bouhanni and the others.
I had hoped that my result in Sabatini would give me a selection for the final WT-race in Beijing, but no.
Once again the team management chose to pass me by!

By now you probably all know about the manager stepping down from Novo Nordisk – SAS after an extraordinary season for the team.
Even though I wasn’t selected for all the races I had hoped he had always been kind to me allowing me to use my fighter spirit in the races I was selected for. When he was gone I realized that he must have been under some pressure from the rest of the organization as I was told to bag my attacking and start busting my ass of in the peloton. Guess there’s no room for young attackers like myself on a team expecting to win pretty much every race.
I really didn’t like the new more one-dimensional approach so I was actually rather happy when they “allowed” me to terminate my contract with immediate effect. Of course that left me without a contract at a time where most teams had already finalized their rosters.
I started asking around, but no one had the funds to employ another rider or was interested in a rider like me. So I went home to Ystad and asked for a job at the Saltsjöbad figuring that my career as a pro cyclist was over.
To my great surprise they told me flat out “No”. Even though they had openings in the ground staff they would not give me a job there!
They said that it wasn’t by pure coincidence, that they had helped me out since early summer. They believe in my future on the bike and I really must have had a funny look on my face trying to get my head around the situation at the time.
They said that they would pay my salary if I could find a team they could approve of!

The old manager must have really liked and seen great potential in Joel. In any case, it's certainly unique what Saltsjöbad is offering to him. He better find a good team now. No excuses!

His old manager is so selfish! Because he left, poer Joel is all on his own to the rule of the new dictator/manager.
Spoiler I'm kidding though it's sad to see the new manager kill this spirit. Doesn't feel hopeful for Nordic Cycling's future! |

Shonak: It's always nice when the local community suppoorts their athletes!
Ian: Guess the new management will focuson dominating the big races instead of doing well throughout the season...
SSJ2Luigi: Not quite sure which side I should be on in that

So after I had been given such a generous offer from Ystad Saltsjöbad I called my old manager, who now works as a consultant for young cyclists as myself. He got me in contact with the management of Fiskars Cykling (former IKEA).
They were very open to the thought of me joining the team. They didn’t quite see the need for another rider either though, but after having been assured by my old manager that I’m actually a good guy basically – I just really want to get my bike to the front and doesn’t enjoy not racing for the win they softened up a bit.
And once again the Saltsjöbad came through and offered to extend their deal with me to the entire team in return for getting their logo on the team jersey. That was more than Fiskars could result and the deal was finalized just in time for the pre-season training camp.

I must say I’m really happy with my decision after having been on the first training riders with my new teammates. The core of the team is Swedish/Finnish with three foreign profiles in Brenes, Morabito and the Spanish climber Grijalba.
In addition to that from that I’m very happy to get to ride alongside Hannes Nordberg again. As you may remember Hannes and I rode together as U23-riders. I helped him to some good results and he did the same for me, so I’m sure it will be good to be back together this year!
The training showed that I’m neither the best nor the worst on the team at anything, but I’m definitely one of the most aggressively riding guys in the team so the team management have assured me that I’ll usually be allowed to try my luck if my legs and the race development allow it.
As for the calendar the team will be riding some races around Europe, but the plan is that I focus on the Nordic races to get back into a good rhythm before hopefully getting back on the European circuit next year.
They also tested me in the same way as I was the last couple of years showing that I’m starting to make some progress:
For the entire team:
