Santos Tour Down Under
January 22nd, 2014 : Stage 6
Adelaide – Adelaide: 90.4 kms - Flat

The final stage of the Santos Tour Down Under is a quick 7 lap circuit around Adelaide. Only a small rise makes for any variation in the profile, but is a category 3 climb for KoM points on the course, with value on the 4th and 6th laps. Also on the course is a pair of sprint point locations a bit early on the 4th and 6th laps. The GC should be a forgone conclusion barring an accident, and another chance for the sprinters is available.

A large breakaway is allowed to go free, with no major threats to the GC in the group, and only Aleksejs Saramotins (Accent Jobs), the Latvian champion, really makes a push to get the sprint points on the stage.

Saramotins would also be the only rider to challenge Marco Pinotti for the KoM points available, trading off who took maximum points. This would give more than enough points for Pinotti to reclaim the lead in the KoM from Christophe Kern (Jean Delatour).

As the break was brought back, an attack was made by Fabian Cancellara, giving a new life to the race. The peloton was disorganized by the large breakaway group moving back into the field and Spartacus was able to take advantage pushing away for a sizeable gap.

As expected, no one was going to chase down Cancellara who would ruin the sprinters day taking a solo victory on a great jump and soloing about eight kilometers while the field tried frivolously to bring him back. In the remaining sprint, Steele Von Hoff (Garmin) would win for second, and Jürgen Roelandts (Lotto) would take third.

I must give a congratulations to the team, we came to Australia with only one goal... Win. And that is what we did, two stage wins, three classifications, including team, KoM and of course the main goal, the General Classification.

As a note to all trying to read, if you think you are missing something, especially as pages pile up, the first page will always have resources and links. I will keep the schedule up to date (3rd post), and the links for the race, and each individual stage will take you to the right spot. And the banner in my signature below each of my posts will take you to the front page of this topic.

Tour of Qatar
February 5th-10th, 2014
PreRace Guide

Welcome to Qatar, everyone knows what they are doing here, this is a sprinters tour. The route for today (regardless of which day) is flat, and a sprint finish is expected. The only variation to this plan is a team time trial on stage two which could gain one of the sprinters just enough time to lead the GC while the rest aim for the bonus seconds at the end of each race to improve their standing.

Team Goals

Our start in Australia has only set the bar higher for our entire team. We expect world class competition especially in the sprints, so we have our best going as well in Kristoff. A team time trial though may be the key in taking the GC which as always is our objective so we have Cancellara to anchor the team along with other skilled time trialists like Quinziato and our youngest rider Kenneth Foss.

Can say I'm only partially looking forward to Qatar...sprinting wasn't exactly our strong suit at TDU. Oman following Qatar will at least offer some climbing.

Tour of Qatar
February 5th, 2014 : Stage 1
Barzan Towers – Doha Golf Club: 135.8 kms - Flat

The roads here pancake flat, a sprinters dream, stage one will not be much different from the rest and the fastest will get their chance at the end unless a breakaway surprises and stays away.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/Qatar/11.jpg

A small four man group is able to break away, with Shane Archbold (Willems Veranda's) winning the 2nd sprint point, ahead of Andreas Stauff (MTN), Matteo Pelucchi (IAM) and Manuel Quinziato who lead through the first intermediate sprint point.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/Qatar/12.jpg

As expected thought the break was not meant to go to the finish, as the last two pieces are brought back into the field as they increase the speed and ready the guns for the final dash.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/Qatar/13.jpg

Three well formed sprint trains take charge at the front, on the left is Mark Cavendish's Omega Pharma - QuickStep train, in the middle is the Blanco train for Cav's old leadout, Mark Renshaw, and the right is Movistar running for José Joaquín Rojas.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/Qatar/14.jpg

The fast Manx would take the win, and BMC's Alexander Kristoff chose the smart wheel to ride, and was nearly able to clip him at the end, but Cavendish just had too much. Mark Renshaw takes third ahead of Rojas and Robbie Hunter (Astana).

Thanks, I'm very happy with it, but concerned as I thought I ran it nearly perfectly so I'm not sure if he can actually beat Cav right now.

Tour of Qatar
February 6th, 2014 : Stage 2
Lusail: 10.3 kms - Flat (TTT)

The only break from mass sprints in this tour is the 2nd stage team time trial, which offers a chance at a few seconds for the faster teams and a chance at a change in leadership.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/Qatar/21.jpg

The disappointment on the day had to below to Blanco Pro Cycling team, which had Mark Renshaw sitting in 3rd place, but after losing 34 seconds on the course today, his chances of the GC are done.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/Qatar/22.jpg

Omega Pharma - Quick Step did all they could to hold on to the leader's jersey, and finished second overall 10 seconds behind the winner. Cavendish would hold onto his lead only if that one team isn't Alexander Kristoff's BMC.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/Qatar/23.jpg

Unfortunately for Cavendish, BMC was the one team better, and won by a solid 10 seconds on the course, a blistering pace set by Cancellara gained the team one second for every kilometer of road. Kristoff will have the lead tomorrow.

So I need to clarify, yes there are pictures, no I did not run the race. I did a 3d race first, to get pictures of the teams, then exited before finishing. After that I did a detailed simulation (which gives me at least some control, for better or worse). The results are from that detailed simulation. PCM12 has an issue with TTT not working right in 3d so I will not ever run them.

I knew that as soon as I saw the result. Smile

Great TTT Wink

Nice sprint from Kristoff! Maybe you could get the jump on Cav just the once and build from there Wink

As for the TTT, I guessed you had simmed Wink I do the same. It was that or you have found a magic formula of how to do them
