Just had a good catch up with the story! Looking good so far. Nice result in T-A, Langkawi and especially MSR with EBH
Are reports going to be coming with pics or is it just going to be in blog form?

@Ian Butler – Thank you!
@the_hoyle – Great to hear you like it so far.
Reports will come in blog posts with pictures, although there is a chance that there won't be stage by stage reports, but more like detailed race recaps singling out the key moments and highlights. |

What do you mean, it's already started!
School turned up this week, I'm planning to bring this on a weekly basis with bigger blog posts about the races. Expect Catalunya this weekend. |

@romaniangoat - Yep, he didn't race so far, but that will change soon. These are the main spring goals for him, so we'll see.

Hey guys, sorry for not blogging more, I was busy racing in Catalunya.
This blog entry is mainly going to be about the Volta a Catalunya, so let's get things started, here is the recap!
Looking at the startlist, the main guys to watch out for were Nairo, Valverde, Purito and Carlos. They were probably the favorites, followed by Rigo and me. Our squad was consisting of 8 riders, there was the "colombian section" with Rigo, Seb and me, the internationals with Cataldo and Knees and the "british-speakers" with Sutty, Dombro and JTL. We were aiming for a top 10 in the GC and some good stage-results too. As for me, nothing special, just trying to hang on and testing those legs.
The first two stages were pretty uneventful for us, only Seb was featuring in the actions with some nice attacks and points from breaks. Those stages were won by Daryl Impey and Michael Matthews respectively.
Here is a picture of Joe D, Seb and me, riding at the front of the peloton early in the day.
The 3rd stage was one of the deciding stages with a mountain-top finsih coming up on the Vallter 2000. Here is the profile of the stage, you can see how tough it was.
It was a pretty slow-paced stage all the way until the final climb, where Rigo and I decided to drop da hammer!
I think we surprised many with that move, as the peloton melted down quickly. Only a select group could follow our pace!
Unfortunately we couldn't really drop more people, it all ended up in a sprint, but it was a good effort and I think we can be satisfied with that in our first race. The stage was won by Purito, Rigo came in 4th 38s down, while I got 8th at 49s.
Stage 4 was probably the queen stage of the race. Unfortunately I had some issues with my health and my recuperation went pretty bad after stage 3, so it was a really rough day for me. I hanged on quite well early, but after a while the pace was just too much for me, I got dropped.
Purito dominated that stage, getting another win, while Rigo did really well, coming in 5th 2 minutes down. After getting dropped I rode my own pace and finished in the respectable 11th position, 2'10 down on J-Rod.
Stage 5 was another flat stage, Seb in the break again. They got caught, Robbie Hunter won the stage.
The 6th and the 7th were two average hilly stages, with an opportunity to take some time back on the others. Unfortunately I was feeling quite sick on stage 6 and lost plenty of time. I could still be happy for Carlos though, who won the stage! Colombians on the rise!
Stage 7 was next up, it went a lot better than the former ones, with Rigo taking the 6th and me coming in 9th! We finished with the same time as the winner, Roman Kreuziger!
In the end Purito won the GC with ease, with Valv and Kreuziger rounding the podium. Here is the top 10.
The Final GC:
1st Joaquim Rodriguez
2nd Alejandro Valverde +1'33
3rd Roman Kreuziger +1'37
4th Carlos Betancur +1'49
5th Rigoberto Urán +3'40
6th Simon Spilak +4'08
7th Nairo Quintana +4'14
8th Michele Scarponi +4'57
9th Andrew Talansky +5'45
10th Sergio Henao +5'51
It wasn't a bad race all in all, I was expecting much less than that from the team. Rigo in the top 5, I got into the top 10, really good stuff all-around in my opinion. Of course, it wasn't ideal, there is still plenty of stuff to work on, but for the first race of the season, not bad at all.
So this was my race in Catalunya, hope you liked it and see you soon,
Sergio |
