Exactly, it's a great result for us to even get a chance at a podium finish and a top 10 as well.

Thanks! While I'd rather not edit the stats since I've already started the game it will be great if he progresses like that!

Just about to do the final stage now, update hopefully coming in a few hours time.

Stage 7

It’s a hot final day for the riders as they negotiate the Paarl circuit. They’ll certainly be glad they don’t have to go farther than 100kms today!

5 riders break from the beginning;

Cooke (XRG)
Boskamp (RB3)
Leibovitz (CDT)
Driscoll (JSH)
Dietrich (TET)
i899.photobucket.com/albums/ac194/OZrocker/PCM%202012/Career%20-%20Burgos%20BH/Tour%20of%20South%20Africa%202012/stage7break1.jpg

Boskamp is the only one who poses any threat at +3’27. No-one seems to take this group as a serious threat and they already have a 4’14” gap by the first sprint, which is not contested.

The peloton let them get out to 4’30 before they even begin moving at a decent speed. The teams at the front of the race are yet again MTN, Raleigh and NSP with Drapac allowing them to do most of the work. At the halfway point it’s still a 3’30 time gap but that will almost certainly not be enough with 50kms still to go.

With 39 kms left, Belda (BUR) launches an attack to see if he can force a move by the other big teams. If not, he stands a chance to take back the 39” deficit he has to Norris.
i899.photobucket.com/albums/ac194/OZrocker/PCM%202012/Career%20-%20Burgos%20BH/Tour%20of%20South%20Africa%202012/stage7belda.jpg

He gets 40” ahead with the breakaway still a further 2’00 up the road as we pass through the last sprint. The peloton do react slowly and Belda is caught as expected with 27kms left to go.
i899.photobucket.com/albums/ac194/OZrocker/PCM%202012/Career%20-%20Burgos%20BH/Tour%20of%20South%20Africa%202012/stage7beldacatch.jpg

The peloton now form into a massively long line that stretches almost 1.5kms long. All the major contenders get set for a big sprint finish and move their best riders up to the front. With the peloton 20kms out the lead is only 1’31” with NSP and MTN still leading the chase while Burgos alongside RB3 and DPC prepare for the finish behind them. 13kms left and the catch is now imminent as we launch our sprint train for the final day.
i899.photobucket.com/albums/ac194/OZrocker/PCM%202012/Career%20-%20Burgos%20BH/Tour%20of%20South%20Africa%202012/stage7train.jpg

A fall behind in the peloton, Zepuntke (RB3) appears to be hurt but he continues on despite the pain. A catch is made as Dietrich gives in to the fast pace while the others soldier on.
i899.photobucket.com/albums/ac194/OZrocker/PCM%202012/Career%20-%20Burgos%20BH/Tour%20of%20South%20Africa%202012/stage7break2.jpg

But they don’t last long either, despite a good fight put up by the last man caught Boskamp.
i899.photobucket.com/albums/ac194/OZrocker/PCM%202012/Career%20-%20Burgos%20BH/Tour%20of%20South%20Africa%202012/stage7boskampcatch.jpg

Jimenez, Antón and Mas are unable to quite get to the front as the best sprint teams simply outpower them. Mas still looks to be an outside chance with 2kms left, but finds his run blocked by Lapthorne (DPC) and Briggs (RAL). Out front it’s Janse Van Rensburg (MTN) and Thömel (NSP) going wheel-to-wheel for the line…
i899.photobucket.com/albums/ac194/OZrocker/PCM%202012/Career%20-%20Burgos%20BH/Tour%20of%20South%20Africa%202012/stage7winner.jpg
…and Janse Van Rensburg wins the final stage and with it takes the overall win! The locals are going crazy with a South African rider from a South African team taking out the overall, points and youth classifications in an outstanding effort. The crowd remain on their feet as Zepuntke is cheered across the line following his nasty crash earlier.

Some good results after a great effort from our boys in South Africa with Lluis taking two stages and coming 3rd in the points class as well as 5th overall. David also finished strongly in 7th place with many other notable achievements from the team over all 7 stages. I’d like to thank and congratulate everyone involved with the team on an outstanding effort that really set the tone for our year.

Race Preview

Our main objective here is just participation, but we’d of course like to get a decent result in one of the bigger local races. This will largely depend on our opponents (it’s a 2.1 race) and their top riders taking part. Without Lluis we’re unlikely to do much on the second of the two stages – a short and flat time-trial (Brandão will hopefully do alright there) – we know that a top GC ranking is very unlikely.

Our main opponents for this meet include

Christian Vande Velde and David Millar (GRS)
Gorka Verdugo and Juan José Oroz (EUS)
Pieter Weening (OGE)
Esteban Chavez and Juan Pablo Suarez (COL)
• Anyone from SaxoBank, with their leader likely to be Chris Anker Sørensen
• Anyone from Movistar, with their leader likely to be Vasil Kiryienka

Vuelta a la Región de Murcia
Stage 1

i899.photobucket.com/albums/ac194/OZrocker/PCM%202012/Career%20-%20Burgos%20BH/Vuelta%20a%20la%20Region%20de%20Murcia%202012/stage1preview.jpg
The final two climbs today will be an absolute killer, which is bad for our chances in the race but great as a preparation for those who have only ridden one race so far this year.

There are lots of attacks at the start, but so many riders try to join that it doesn’t work. Belda is one of those trying to break with Branaa being our protected rider in the pack for this race. Despite Euskaltel-Euskadi coming to the front, there is a break from 4 riders;
Belda (BUR)
Taciak (CCC)
Donati (ASA)
Larsen (BWC)
i899.photobucket.com/albums/ac194/OZrocker/PCM%202012/Career%20-%20Burgos%20BH/Vuelta%20a%20la%20Region%20de%20Murcia%202012/stage1break1.jpg

They quickly get a minute’s advantage as the peloton seem unconcerned with the break but stop any others from getting away. Day (UHC) and Bizkarra (ORB) also break after the first climb.
i899.photobucket.com/albums/ac194/OZrocker/PCM%202012/Career%20-%20Burgos%20BH/Vuelta%20a%20la%20Region%20de%20Murcia%202012/stage1daybizkarra.jpg

They join just before the 1st sprint point, with the gap now at 4’30.
i899.photobucket.com/albums/ac194/OZrocker/PCM%202012/Career%20-%20Burgos%20BH/Vuelta%20a%20la%20Region%20de%20Murcia%202012/stage1break2.jpg

The peloton appear to have lost interest in launching any further breaks. At the halfway mark the gap is 6’40, before the peloton start to decrease the deficit. The Euskaltel led peloton makes its’ way up the narrow category 2 climb.
i899.photobucket.com/albums/ac194/OZrocker/PCM%202012/Career%20-%20Burgos%20BH/Vuelta%20a%20la%20Region%20de%20Murcia%202012/stage1euskaltel.jpg

As expected, there is plenty of drama as the peleton splits on the mountain climb. Porto (PRT), Rutkiewicz (CCC) and Kreder (GRS) are among those dropped. For us it’s Verona and Orengo who will need to fight their way back to the main group. They both manage it, but Belda’s group now has only a 4’00 advantage as we hit the lowest point on the course. With most of the peloton rejoining, the breakaway have only 2’47 heading into the final two climbs. Belda knows he’ll need to force a quicker pace to be any chance.

The peloton splits a second time with some top Katusha riders now falling behind. With the gap under 1’00 and his team-mates struggling to keep up with the pace, Belda gives it a bit more effort on the first climb and reaches the first summit alone.
i899.photobucket.com/albums/ac194/OZrocker/PCM%202012/Career%20-%20Burgos%20BH/Vuelta%20a%20la%20Region%20de%20Murcia%202012/stage1belda.jpg

The other riders are keen to keep up with him and try to follow. Back in the peloton Brandão is now gone with all others except Damien Branaa struggling to stay in the lead group. Up front there attacks aplenty, coming from Pantano (COL), Docker (OGE), Galdos (CJR) and Horrach (KAT) but they are not allowed to get away by teams Euskaltel (who now have all 7 riders up front for Verdugo) and Movistar. With 15kms left Belda leads by 35” from the group of 5, themselves just 35” in front of the peloton. It’s not to be for the other 5 riders with Euskaltel just seconds away from making the catch.
i899.photobucket.com/albums/ac194/OZrocker/PCM%202012/Career%20-%20Burgos%20BH/Vuelta%20a%20la%20Region%20de%20Murcia%202012/stage1catch1.jpg

With Belda vulnerable out front and only 20” clear, Paulinho (STB) and Kolobnev (KAT) attack.
i899.photobucket.com/albums/ac194/OZrocker/PCM%202012/Career%20-%20Burgos%20BH/Vuelta%20a%20la%20Region%20de%20Murcia%202012/stage1catch2.jpg

Verdugo senses this may be the move to join in with and takes off. The three are joined by Quintana (MOV) as they take the lead off Belda. It’s all over for him and for our chances all together with Branaa caught behind and his team-mates too tired to help. Quintana and Verdugo go it alone to the summit with a 1’00 advantage over Kolobnev, Paulinho, Atapuma (COL) and Txurruka (EUS) with Oroz (EUS) unable to catch his team-mates to help. With under 5kms left the duo is now certain to contain today’s winner. The sprint is on. Verdugo starts out strong…
i899.photobucket.com/albums/ac194/OZrocker/PCM%202012/Career%20-%20Burgos%20BH/Vuelta%20a%20la%20Region%20de%20Murcia%202012/stage1finish.jpg
…but Quintana has more left in the tank and wins! Atapuma comes in third to complete a great finish for the nation of Colombia with two virtual unknowns taking 1st and 3rd. Belda is our best placed rider finishing just outside the top 20.

Vuelta a la Región de Murcia
Stage 2

i899.photobucket.com/albums/ac194/OZrocker/PCM%202012/Career%20-%20Burgos%20BH/Vuelta%20a%20la%20Region%20de%20Murcia%202012/stage2preview.jpg

There are really just the two riders who can win the race after yesterday, but the stage win is far more open with quite a few good TT riders at this race.

First rider out is the last to finish yesterday; Daniel Dominguez (NSP). A weak time-trialist, he sets an opening time of 18’46. More riders come through and get the time to beat down to around 18’15. Rasmus Quaade (BWC) is the Danish national time trial champ and the first of the real chances today.
i899.photobucket.com/albums/ac194/OZrocker/PCM%202012/Career%20-%20Burgos%20BH/Vuelta%20a%20la%20Region%20de%20Murcia%202012/stage2quaade.jpg

He sets the first time under 18’00 clocking in with a 17’42 at the finish. Many riders try to beat him and fall short before Brett Lancaster (OGE) becomes the new leader with a time of 17’15
i899.photobucket.com/albums/ac194/OZrocker/PCM%202012/Career%20-%20Burgos%20BH/Vuelta%20a%20la%20Region%20de%20Murcia%202012/stage2lancaster.jpg

With half of the riders finished the top 10 looks like this
i899.photobucket.com/albums/ac194/OZrocker/PCM%202012/Career%20-%20Burgos%20BH/Vuelta%20a%20la%20Region%20de%20Murcia%202012/stage2halfway.jpg

Brandão (BUR) prepares to take off, unfortunately our best rider in this format won’t have the benefit of seeing how his team-mates deal with the course first.
i899.photobucket.com/albums/ac194/OZrocker/PCM%202012/Career%20-%20Burgos%20BH/Vuelta%20a%20la%20Region%20de%20Murcia%202012/stage2brandao.jpg

He finishes 1’00 off Lancaster as many others try but fail to beat the leading time. Jack Bobridge (OGE) in his new NC jersey has to be one of the favourites today, and probably the first rider out with a serious chance of beating Lancaster.
i899.photobucket.com/albums/ac194/OZrocker/PCM%202012/Career%20-%20Burgos%20BH/Vuelta%20a%20la%20Region%20de%20Murcia%202012/stage2bobridge.jpg

But no, the Australian champion falls short of his countryman (and team-mate)’s time. All the riders from Burgos have now come through, with the best results coming from Carazo and Branaa who finish 58” off the time of Lancaster. His team-mate Tomas Vaitkus gets the closest of anyone but is still 11” down on the leading time with just 20 riders left to go.

The bookmakers’ favourite for the stage, David Millar (GRS) is now out on course. He gives it his best and falls just short! Only 3” off and he takes provisional 2nd place.
i899.photobucket.com/albums/ac194/OZrocker/PCM%202012/Career%20-%20Burgos%20BH/Vuelta%20a%20la%20Region%20de%20Murcia%202012/stage2millar.jpg

None of the other top riders coming through are able to get any closer than Millar and the two Orica riders. The top 5 in the overall classification are coming towards the finish line.

#5 Vasil Kiryienka (MOV) – one of the favourites for the stage. He’s looking good so far but can he do it… 1” slower! Very unlucky for the Belarusian.
i899.photobucket.com/albums/ac194/OZrocker/PCM%202012/Career%20-%20Burgos%20BH/Vuelta%20a%20la%20Region%20de%20Murcia%202012/stage2kiryienka.jpg

#4 Alexandr Kolobnev (KAT) – not a huge time-trialist who will need something special to maintain his high placing. No, he’ll drop out of the top 5 after finishing 40” off the lead.
#3 John Darwin Atapuma (COL) – a very weak time-trialist and shouldn’t take the white jersey unless Quintana has a shocker. He finishes +53”
#2 Gorka Verdugo (EUS) – This is where it gets interesting. He starts just 8” behind Quintana and is a good TT rider likely to take the overall win. Only +8” to Lancaster, it should be enough.
i899.photobucket.com/albums/ac194/OZrocker/PCM%202012/Career%20-%20Burgos%20BH/Vuelta%20a%20la%20Region%20de%20Murcia%202012/stage2verdugo.jpg

#1 Nairo Quintana (MOV) – Needs to set a very quick time to retain the lead and despite being decent in this format he’ll have to produce something special. Here he comes…
i899.photobucket.com/albums/ac194/OZrocker/PCM%202012/Career%20-%20Burgos%20BH/Vuelta%20a%20la%20Region%20de%20Murcia%202012/stage2quintana.jpg

…+38”! Verdugo is the winner! Quintana will have to settle for second in this race but he still takes home the white jersey. Verdugo is also given the points classification just ahead of Kiryienka and the mountains over Donati (ASA).

Race Preview

Some unfortunate news coming through with Antón reporting on the morning that he was still getting over a cold and would probably not be at his best today. This course offers up a sprinters paradise and without him at his best we’ll probably have to try winning from an early break. A few French pro continental teams have signed up for this race too with Europcar especially bringing a strong squad along.

The race favourites are
• Sébastien Chavanel, Said Haddou and Matteo Pelucchi (EUC)
• Denis Flahaut (RLM)
• Fabien Bacquet (AUB)
• Guillaume Blot (BSC)
• Arran Brown (MTN)
• Jimmy Engoulvent (SAU)

As I said previously, this course means a sprinter is almost certain to walk away with victory. The weather is not exactly ideal for racing today either, but we'll do our best with Torres hoping to get away early.

The earliest successful break contains 5 riders;
Torres (BUR)
Tortelier (SAU)
Summerhill (CDT)
Mansell (UKY)
Baur (ARH)
i899.photobucket.com/albums/ac194/OZrocker/PCM%202012/Career%20-%20Burgos%20BH/GP%20Ville%20de%20Lillers%202012/break1.jpg

It doesn’t last long though and when the next one comes a few kms later Torres isn’t able to join in with it. The riders out in front are Ennekens (SKT), Bagot (COF) and Summerhill. That’s not it though, as there is a push coming from the main field and the trio are soon joined by Huizenga (RB3) and Winter (ARH).
i899.photobucket.com/albums/ac194/OZrocker/PCM%202012/Career%20-%20Burgos%20BH/GP%20Ville%20de%20Lillers%202012/break2.jpg

At the front of the peloton are teams Optum and Europcar, but they don’t seem concerned with the riders out front and let the breakaway get out to a 3’00 advantage.

Bad news from the back of the field as Vabourzeix (LPM) abandons the race. Race radio later reports he may have fractured a rib in a heavy crash that fortunately involved no other riders. With the torrential rain pouring down combined with the narrow roads it was always going to be a bit dangerous out there today, but it seems the riders are heeding the warnings for the most part with many taking a long time to get drinks back to their team leaders through the heavily crowded roads.
i899.photobucket.com/albums/ac194/OZrocker/PCM%202012/Career%20-%20Burgos%20BH/GP%20Ville%20de%20Lillers%202012/peloton.jpg

The gap remains at just 4’00 as we pass the halfway mark and when there are only 65kms to go, everyone seems to be waiting for the moment when Team Europcar will decide to up the pace. We don’t have to wait much longer though with LA-Antarte coming to the front and the two teams agreeing to set a quicker pace.

Progress is slow with the break still working together, but 46kms out from the finish the lead is down to 3’00. Attack with 39kms left, it’s Dion (BSC).
i899.photobucket.com/albums/ac194/OZrocker/PCM%202012/Career%20-%20Burgos%20BH/GP%20Ville%20de%20Lillers%202012/dion.jpg

It’s an odd move at this time of the race seeing as he isn’t the team’s main hope for victory. Despite the very fast pace being set from behind he appears to be gaining time on both packs and with just under 30kms left he is 51” behind the 5 leaders – the peloton a further 44” off the pace.

Both SKT and SAU are headed to the front to give strength to the chase which now looks certain to be completed thanks to a group effort on the front. With Dion finally falling back off the pace and the peloton just over 1’00 from the leaders, we make our big move as Mas launches from the pack.
i899.photobucket.com/albums/ac194/OZrocker/PCM%202012/Career%20-%20Burgos%20BH/GP%20Ville%20de%20Lillers%202012/mas.jpg

This appears to be the catalyst for the chase group with Dion caught soon after the move is made. Mas survives a bit longer but both he and the pack are caught simultaneously just down the road. Winter (ARH) stays out in front hoping to last the final 10kms and get a well-earned win for himself. Now the contenders start to make their move as Engoulvent (SAU) charges out in front. A crash in the pack!
i899.photobucket.com/albums/ac194/OZrocker/PCM%202012/Career%20-%20Burgos%20BH/GP%20Ville%20de%20Lillers%202012/crash.jpg

Fuchs (NSP) goes down and dozens of riders are falling like dominoes, which results in more than half the field being caught behind including race favourites Pelucchi (EUC), Maté (COF) and Holohan (RAL). For us Jimenez also fell, but it appears to be only a very minor injury.

With many favourites off the pace a few riders have sensed their chance as Lequatre and Blot (both BSC) and Vanbilsen (SKT) have all gone ahead with Engoulvent. The heavily reduced peloton still led by Europcar keep the chase going and drag back Lequatre and Winter, but the three remaining escapees still remain a chance.

The pack is set for a sprint and Mas tries to follow Chavanel (EUC) in. The catch is made in the final kilometre, Chavanel gets out in front while Pichon (BSC) and Flahaut (RLM) also make a dash for it and it’s very close on the line…
i899.photobucket.com/albums/ac194/OZrocker/PCM%202012/Career%20-%20Burgos%20BH/GP%20Ville%20de%20Lillers%202012/finish.jpg
…Flahaut! Roubaix get the win in a bit of an upset! A nice surprise for us with Antón sneaking in for a top 10 finish despite his less than ideal preparation.

Yeah. Everyone else ran themselves into the ground for Lluis who didn't have enough energy left in the end, so he just took off on his own and was a bit lucky to do that well.
