Is looking good so far.
Will there also be an individual classification for the riders (with the points for the ultra classification)?

I was thinking about doing that but then I thought that would be too much to do for my liking, if anyone is ever desperate to work out individual points towards the Ultra Classification it will be easy to do.
Congratulations to TMR for having the stage winner in squad, also Iran Khodro look to have a strong team to control the race, the biggest fail has to go to Nieve I think finishing in atleast 120th. |

7th for Grivko is great. Marczynski only lost 25 seconds, which he should be able to get back in the mountains |

Everyone can still win
The next stage should be interesting and the finish could see the yellow jersey changing hands if there are time gaps, there will be no time bonuses though,
Any thoughts on rider's who will do well next stage? |

Jeez, guys its only some seconds on a prologue, realistically this stage likely means nothing in terms of the GC. I still like Nieve for the GC, he will be able to put minutes on in the mountains especially with such a strong team around him.

My team can't do anything at prologues
Anyway, next stage could have a hard pace, if so, some pure sprinters might be dropped.
Hoping for one of my Perez guys, both uphill sprinters

In truth the organisers could have picked the favourites names out of a hat, today is certainly a stage where many can win.
Here it is, the first stage proper underway. Still in Liege the first attack comes in and it is by S.J.Jang (KAR), Korean Air were very aggressive early on.
Despite the rainy conditions attacks were in the dozens, with riders trying to get important exposure for the first road stage. Lodewyck (NEL), Backstedt (KLO) and Brazilian champion Bulgarelli (BDB) were very prominant in the early break attempts. Iran Khodro perhaps didn't fancy riding on the front all day for the yellow jersey, Voss (IKO) attempted to get in the majority of the breaks. But Standard Chartered weren't having that, they were the most prominant team early on in shutting down the break.
40 kilometers into the race , the weather was worsening and a fifteen man break including Van Poppel (QMS) was just swallowed up led by an Aer Lingus led peloton, could a break even establish today?
Yes it could. Kreder @ "32 (RBL) attacks over the cote de cokaifagne and takes the first mountain points of the tour, he quickly gains a gap of a minute, is it a solo breakaway?
Not today. Finetto @ "25 (SSL) attacks and quickly joins up with Kreder and easily outsprints him to win the mountain point at cote de francorchamps. With 140km to go the two riders have a 2 minute gap over the peloton when there is another attack, this time by von Hoff (BZQ) @ "29 who bridges the gap to the two out front in just under 15 kilometers to form the 'official' break of the day.
Despite Kreder taking the first mountain point Finetto would easily sprint to win all the others on the stage, so Sahin Sucuklari, one of the smallest teams here, would be on the podium at the end of the stage atleast.
Meanwhille back in the peloton the lions share of the work was being done by Iran Khodro, mainly through Reda in third place and .......WHAT'S THIS Siutsou (4th place). Yes Aerlingus were probably on the front of the race more than any other team, Siutsou probably foregoing his GC chance to help his team.
With 82 kilometers to go the sprint point came up. Out front in a blanket finish Finetto won, behind the pace had slackened and the break had gained a significant advantage yet it would still be interesting to see who would go for this sprint.
Spoiler 1 | Finetto | 20 | 2 | Von Hoff | 17 | 3 | Kreder | 15 | 4 | Bole | 13 | 5 | Andriato | 11 | 6 | Ljunblad | 10 | 7 | Kwiatkowski | 9 | 8 | Phinney | 8 | 9 | Thomas | 7 | 10 | Bazayev | 6 | 11 | Vantomme | 5 | 12 | Schumacher | 4 | 13 | Golas | 3 | 14 | Jorgenson | 2 | 15 | Deignan | 1 |
The above results for the sprint are quite startling. No Hinault, Napolitano or Richese (who road partly on the front today). But more startling was the stage time gaps. With 80 kilometers to do the break had over 9 minutes over the peloton, it was in the balance.
Despite a huge time gap the break really started to wilt especially as more and more teams wanted to contribute to the chase, including Pulso Verde and Peodua. But there was no doubt AerLingus were doing the lionshare of work.
With the gap under 1:30 to the break two men attack from the peloton, Mizbani (IKO) and South African champ Hunter (KLU) not wanting to wait for the final.
But this did not last long and Aer Lingus brought back the break with 8 kilometers to go. Siutsou gives it one last effort and we reach the ramps up the finish.
With 3 kilometers to go Keukeleire (BZQ) attacks....but makes no ground ahead of the AerLingus train. It really is all about position too far back and you have no chance.
Inside the last kilometer and it is a real slog. Lithuanian champ Bagdonas releases Bole, are Aer Lingus rewarded with a win for all their hard efforts....
Yes they are, the win goes to Bole 7" over the peloton, Marcyznski (AFL) finished particulary well. A well deserved win.

Disappointing result
At least Spilak climbs in the GC, but Tomas could definately do better than 16th

I mean: great work for the team, really smart to control the race like that and we bring home the bacon!

@ Selwink Lodewyck fell and ended up well off the back, also don't worry your a GC team.
@Ian Butler, actually you guys tried to get into the break, Only three made it today. They had a gap of 9 mins with 80 kms to go so they could have made it.
Also can people stop predicting that Coca Cola Lime will come last that's a given! |
