A windy day in the Spanish country which saw another big domination by the young Mexican star. Even before the day was really started the only one who seemed to be able to beat Luis Jiménez, Luis Leon Sánchez was put behind. His team tried to help him but it didn’t really help.
If you look carefully in the background you will see that Sánchez got up again (in the green jersey) but it didn’t help him because Luis had already leaved the peloton. On the big climb Luis and his teammate, the Bulgarian champion Petrov followed an attack by Quintana just as most of the morning breakaway was catched.
A short time later Luis blasted past Kessiakoff taking the lead and heading towards another great solo win, this time even bigger than the first one.
Nobody could hold his temper down and with the most aggressive riding probably ever seen he not only won the stage but also secured his overall victory of his first WT race. Though two stages still remained it didn’t look like anybody was able to stop him.
1. Luis Jiménez - Caja Rural
2. Daniel Navarro - Saxo Bank - (+3'56")
3. Daniel Moreno - Katusha - (+3'56")
After the race I talked to him about this beautiful win.
Mikel: “Luis, first of all congratulations on this fabulous win. How do you feel?”
Luis: “Thanks man! (…) I’m out of words really. I don’t know what to say.”
Mikel: “This is probably one of the greatest soloing efforts in history. You must be really happy?”
Luis: “I am, I am. I had confidence in myself today. The guys did a fantastic job on the final climb and I just wanted to thank them by finishing my job. This is just (…)”
Mikel: “Amazing?”
Luis: “Yes. That’s the word!! I think I will take it easy the following days just keep hold of my jersey.”
Mikel: “Good luck and another congratulations.”

Unfortunately we don’t have pictures or videos of the last two stages of Volta Ciclista a Catalunya. We also only have the top 10 of the results those two days and what we can see is that Luis isn’t inside top 10 on neither stage 6 nor stage 7. Luis Leon Sánchez though won the last stage but it wasn’t enough for him. Luis Jiménez therefore won the race overall.
Luis also took both the KoM and the Young rider classification so his debut on the World Tour was a great success.
Final GC
1. Luis Jiménez - Caja Rural
2. Luis León Sánchez - Rabobank - (+2'41")
3. Daniel Moreno - Katusha - (+4'27")
4. Peter Velits - Omega Pharma - (+5'07")
5. Chris Horner - RadioShack - (+5'45")
Points Luis León Sánchez - Rabobank
KoM Luis Jiménez - Caja Rural
Young Luis Jiménez - Caja Rural
Team RadioShack
Mikel: “Mark, what did you think when you saw Luis dominate this race?”
Mark: “I was deeply impressed. Such a young kid winning such a race and in such a way! I discussed it with my colleague back then and we both thought that he would end up winning a GT – which he did later on.”
Mikel: “Yes, he won a GT later in his career but that’s not what we should talk about now. We also saw that his stamina wasn’t the best. I mean on the last two stages he almost broke down. If he hadn’t had such a big lead he wouldn’t have won the race.”
Mark: “You’re so right about that. But remember he was young back then, still learning. His team wasn’t the strongest either but his own performances saved his race.”
Mikel: “His performances were absolute stunning. I mean two great solo wins in a row hasn’t been seen before?”
And by that we finish for today. Luis’ next race was El Pais Vasco, so be sure to see how that went. Bye! |

@fcancellara: He lost much time on the last two stages. Actually about two and a half on the last stage alone. Luckily his lead was big enough. Thanks!

Luis got a great start to his second WT stage race. Unfortunately we don’t have many pictures from stage 1. We have one picture and some commentary from Eurosport delivered by our very own Mark Russell. Thank you, Mark.
Mark: “No problem.”
“And here the peloton come, we can see them out the window! (…) Looks like Millar and Cunego in the front (…) The group looks small, Gasparotto looks good (…) And here comes Sánchez with an amazing speed watch him (…) Who is that behind him? (…) I think it is Jiménez, what a surprise!? (…) They come round the final corner with Sánchez in the lead (…) Vanendert and Jiménez goes past him (…) Who wins? I think Jiménez is cheering (…) Oh my god! Luis Jiménez won a mass sprint. What a talent! (…) Climbs, sprints, everything. What is next?! (…)
Mikel: “But Mark, really no great sprinters were in that group. He was fast, but he couldn’t keep up with guys like Cav and Greipel who dominated those days?”
Mark: “Well we hadn’t seen yet at this point. No one expected it but no one would be surprised if he could. He showed some brilliant skills.”
Mikel: “We do know though, that he couldn’t match guys like Cav and Greipel later in his career, that’s not a secret really. But we also do know that this wasn’t his last surprise.”
Mark: “Oh yeah. I know what you think about, but that’s a long time into the future from where we are at the moment with his career.”
Mikel: “You are so right. Luis continued his great showing but what about the rest of Pais Vasco? Find out soon.” |
