TimoCycling: Thanks man!
sutty68: Thank you
JuanMotr: Back in those good old days, huh Oh, you checked the history books already to see how much he won?
Today will be impossible for me, as I won't be home until 8-8.30 pm. Tomorrow I may be at home, so I'll do one race report (at least) then! |

Volta a Catalunya 2012 - Stage 3
Despite this being the queen stage of that year's Volta a Catalunya, we were unable to find any footage, photos or other. We did find the result!
1 | Mathias Frank | BMC Racing Team | 6h31'48 | | 2 | Francis De Greef | Lotto Belisol | + 36 | | 3 | Maxime Monfort | Radioshack Nissan Trek | s.t. | | 4 | Daniel Moreno | Katusha Team | s.t. | | 5 | Peter Velits | Omega Pharma-Quick-Step Cycling Team | + 1'00 | | 6 | Marco Pinotti | BMC Racing Team | s.t. | | 7 | Samuel Sánchez | Euskaltel Euskadi | s.t. | | 8 | Nicolas Roche | Ag2r La Mondiale | s.t. | | 9 | Richie Porte | Sky Pro Cycling | s.t. | | 10 | Christian Vandevelde | Team Garmin-Barracuda | s.t. | | 11 | Carlos Alberto Betancourt | Acqua & Sapone | s.t. | | 12 | Roberto Velásquez | Colombia Coldeportes | + 1'32 | IanButler | 13 | Matteo Carrara | Vacansoleil-DCM Pro Cycling Team | + 2'52 | | 14 | Brice Feillu | Saur - Sojasun | s.t. | | 15 | Andy Schleck | Radioshack Nissan Trek | s.t. | |
GC
1 | Daniel Moreno | Katusha Team | 14h01'50 | | 2 | Peter Velits | Omega Pharma-Quick-Step Cycling Team | + 20 | | 3 | Samuel Sánchez | Euskaltel Euskadi | + 26 | | 4 | Maxime Monfort | Radioshack Nissan Trek | + 40 | | 5 | Nicolas Roche | Ag2r La Mondiale | + 1'08 | | 6 | Richie Porte | Sky Pro Cycling | s.t. | | 7 | Carlos Alberto Betancourt | Acqua & Sapone | s.t. | | 8 | Marco Pinotti | BMC Racing Team | s.t. | | 9 | Christian Vandevelde | Team Garmin-Barracuda | s.t. | | 10 | Roberto Velásquez | Colombia Coldeportes | + 1'40 | IanButler |
So now Roberto was moving up in the GC, entering the top 10. Samuel Sánchez recalled his first encounter with Roberto on this day:
It was just unbelievable, this young kid comes around, no one knows him, he just came into the peloton out of the blue. But what an aggressive rider he was! I remember him attacking on that particular stage, there was no stopping him. He had this special gift, a talent for accelerating. He would just blew out of the pack like a bullet leaving a gun, what a force. But I also believe that his explosiveness really cost him, especially at the early years. He blew his legs on many occasions, and this was one of them. He just had a will power strong enough that he could still finish a race top 15 even after he's blown his legs. He was a remarkable young fella, and I knew we'd have to watch out for him in the (near) future. |

TimoCycling: Thanks let's hope it doesn't happen again, though!
JuanMotr: Yeah, because he did really well on the KoM side, but in the sim he picked up 1 point only. Thanks
sutty68: Let's hope so!
Avin Wargunnson: I'm glad you like it! I hope to keep you satisfied, then! |

Volta a Catalunya 2012 - Stage 4
It seems as Roberto was becoming somewhat of a rarity in the peloton. Famous riders started to know his name. What contributed to this was not only his racing style, but also his mysteriousness. After the race, he was so calm and so quiet, it was incredible.
Stage 4 was a profile fit for a rider as Roberto.
But as we all know, Roberto was not someone who could just sit back, relax and let others to the work. The breakaway was dangerously far ahead and Roberto wanted to sprint for the victory, so he worked hard!
Thanks to his riding, everything came back together.
He started his sprint far out, looking very confident.
But once again Roberto had learned a lesson. This was world class level, racing against the top of the world is not the same as racing in a .1 race.
However, this was his first WT podium place, and he was proud of it. We have written down a small audio-fragment of that day:
I had a hard day, so I know I raced well. If my legs don't hurt after a race, I didn't do everything possible. I think the result is pretty fair, and this is my first podium place in a race of this caliber. There are three stages left, and I wish to climb up two more steps on the podium. Thank you.
His coach said something else, though:
Damn that Roberto! I kept yelling: "stop working", but did he listen, no? If he had just let other teams do the dirty work, he would've won, without a doubt! It's like he feels the need to prove himself a worthy rider, all the time. I'll try to talk some sense in him and straighten him out for the final stages, which should open up some opportunities for him.
Indeed, the three remaining stages were exactly like the young Roberto Velásquez liked them. One ending in a small uphill, one ending flat but after a small hill, and another ending in a descent. Roberto would try to take them all!
Result Stage 4

GC

The next chapter will tell about his performance in stage 5 of his first WT race. |

Volta a Catalunya 2012 - Stage 5
This was yet another chance for Roberto.
This day is known as a turning point in Roberto's career, but not because of the right reason. He fell into a fight with his coach here, and that fight would last for quite some time. The fight started when the peloton had gone into a tunnel, when they came back out, Roberto was leading the pack to reduce the breakaway. His coach was pissed off.
About 10km to the finish, Roberto surprised the peloton by sneakingly accelerating on the left of the road.
We have written down commentary from Eurosport:
There goes the young Colombian - did you see him? He's trying to outsmart the pack, I don't think anyone noticed he's gone - wait a minute - yes, they spotted him and they're chasing him down. A nice try by the young Colombian, but it looks like we're heading for a sprint!
So unfortunately he did not succeed and so the sprint would decide who today's winner was.
Roberto's coach:
This is not working. I'm really mad at Roberto at the moment. He's just not listening. If he wants to ruin his potential, fine, but he can do it without me!
Roberto after the race:
I think it's the length of these races. +200km is a long distance for a young rider like me. The final two races are over 40km shorter, so I think I have a much bigger chance there. [...] I think he (Roberto's coach) is exaggerating. It's just not sportsman to let a potential victory slip away because I'm not supposed to work. I listen to him, but I want to win here, and that won't happen if the breakaway makes it to the finish. It's as simple as that.

Nice story, love the fight with his coach! It really adds the aspect of making something of your potential and become a world class rider.
Off: could you tell me how to get the circles out of the screens? (You can PM me) |

I'm not sure if Roberto is realign aiming to be bad but he certainly is given his coach a run for his money
