Yeah he actually has great early season form: 67 fitness Grin
I played third stage yesterday, report will be up in the evening.

Santos Tour Down Under

Stage 3: Unley – Victor Harbour (135.5 km)
Profile and situation before the start
i1051.photobucket.com/albums/s428/VoetsT/Santos%20Tour%20down%20under%202012/3profile.jpg
We are 19” back in GC so the main goal is simple: take as much boni seconds as possible. We will try to have a man in the BOTD so we can save our man for the lead-out.

The race
i1051.photobucket.com/albums/s428/VoetsT/Santos%20Tour%20down%20under%202012/31.jpg
I t was a fast begin of the race with a lot of attacks. After 26km there were 4 man in front, one of them was our S. Pauwels. They were chased by a group of 7 men. 8km before the mountain sprint there everything come together and there was a group of 17 riders (some riders attacked from the peloton en bridged the gap on there own. the most famous names in that 17 men group were S. Pauwels, R. McEwen and S. Vanmarcke. As you can see on the picture above, Pauwels won the mountain sprint with ease. There are now 3 riders with 16 points but M. Brammeier still hold the head position because of his good GC position.

i1051.photobucket.com/albums/s428/VoetsT/Santos%20Tour%20down%20under%202012/32.jpg
That 17 men group was too big for Lotto, Argos-Shimano and sky so they started to chase. You can see J. Van den Broeck and B. Wiggins on front of the peloton.

i1051.photobucket.com/albums/s428/VoetsT/Santos%20Tour%20down%20under%202012/33.jpg
When everything come together, M. Brammeier and Y. Géne decide to go on their own. It’s Brammeier’s 3rd day in the BOTD, he really don’t feels his legs. He won the first intermediate sprint because Géne didn’t sprint at all. We thank him for the free points. M. Cavendish took the last boni second.
H. Clarke was chasing the leader duo and reached them just before the 2nd intermediate sprint.

i1051.photobucket.com/albums/s428/VoetsT/Santos%20Tour%20down%20under%202012/34.jpg
How easy it was on the first sprint, how bad it was on this. Brammeier thought that Géne would not sprint but that was wrong. Géne won the sprint because Brammeier wasn’t ready to sprint. I’m sure Brammeier isn’t happy with that, 2nd place for him. Clarke becomes 3rd.
Back in the peloton, Movistar was in full control. With 30km to go, the gap was down to 1’.
A few kilometres later, Sky started helping Movistar. They sent C. Sutton (who was Cav’s lead-out man in the first stage) to the front.
Brammeier and Clarke dropped Géne. But with 16 km to go was there adventure over.

i1051.photobucket.com/albums/s428/VoetsT/Santos%20Tour%20down%20under%202012/35.jpg
That was the sign to start making our lead-out train. Vermote, Vandewalle, Trentin, Fenn and Ciolek are all in each other’s wheel. We were the only team with a train and all the other sprinters were fighting for the wheel of Ciolek. Sadly for us, it was Cavendish who won it. Movistar is still trying to hold R. Costa at the front.

i1051.photobucket.com/albums/s428/VoetsT/Santos%20Tour%20down%20under%202012/36.jpg
As you can see, all the sprinter in our wheel. E. Boasson Hagen is trying to ruin our train but it will not work. It’s 2km to go and Trentin is in front with in very hard pace. He perfectly launched Fenn. With 1km to go Cav came out of Ciolek’s wheel. This was the moment, Ciolek started his sprint. With 500m to go, Cav and Ciolek were face to face. Who will win this??

i1051.photobucket.com/albums/s428/VoetsT/Santos%20Tour%20down%20under%202012/37.jpg
WE DID IT. It was very close. But we beat the world champion, the fastest man on a bike.

i1051.photobucket.com/albums/s428/VoetsT/Santos%20Tour%20down%20under%202012/38.jpg
A very happy Ciolek on the podium in Victor Harbour

Conclusion
What a day. All our pre stage goals are achieved, and it’s even better with the win. We can’t still believe it, it was really Mark Cavendish. It’s a great day for Ciolek, after all his misery he is ready to strike back. He was also happy with the way the team preformed today. To use his words: I have never sit on a train who was that fast.

Interview: Rik van Slycke
i1051.photobucket.com/albums/s428/VoetsT/Santos%20Tour%20down%20under%202012/RikvanSlycke.jpg

This is an interview with our sportdirector in Australia Rik van Slycke 2 hours after the victory of Gerald Ciolek in the Santos Tour Down Under.

Question: What were your first thought when you saw the results after the stage of today?
Answer: I couldn’t believe it, I thought it was a dream. When I saw the startlist 3 day ago and saw the strong Sky team I thought it would be impossible to beat them.
Q: But the team did it perfect today. What is the reason for their excellent performance?
A: I thinks it’s because of the fact that our team is still young and they want to proof themselves. In the first place to us (the sportdirectors) and to the world. If I see what Trentin and Fenn did in the last kilometres, that’s just amazing. But today we were lucky that there was no other sprint train.
Q: What do you mean?
A: Well, if you review the first stage you can see that we were surprised by team Sky. But today we were the only team with a train so we were able to ride our own tempo. A tempo that we can hold for a long time. If a young rider try to follow the more experienced riders, they will burn themselves up.
Q: Do you have already spoken with Ciolek and what did he say?
A: Yes I had a quick chat with him. He was in heaven, I could see it on his face, I had never see a smile so big as on his face. All the misery of the past years are behind him, I feel it.
Q: What do you expect for the next stages?
A: That’s hard to predict, but we fight as long as possible for the GC. We are 9” back, that’s not much but we will have to find a way to bridge that gap.
Q: You can win another stage, tomorrow is a new chance.
A: It’s not that easy. I see more chances on the Willunga Hill. Ciolek was already strong in the second stage and he will be stronger on the Willunge Hill. It’s the only stage were Cavendish is in the disadvantage. But there is still Costa, I’m not sure but I don’t think he will lose time on that stage. So we only can do our best and see what happens. And hye, it’s still cycling: a sport where miracles exists as you can see today.
Q: Ok, thanks for the interview and good luck for the rest of the race and season.

The next stage will be up tomorrow

Santos Tour Down Under

Stage 4: Norwood – Tanunda (130.0 km)
Profile and situation before the start

Another flat stage, maybe another mass print, maybe another stage win. With the 10” boni at the finish, Ciolek is the onlyone who can become the new GC leader after this stage. It’s also an important day for the Skoda KOM jersey, with 2 climbs there are 32 points on the road. We will try to have Brammeier (current leader) or Pauwels in the BOTD. Btw, our best placed rider in the isn’t Pauwels but Brammeier (it’s incorrect at the picture).

The race
i1051.photobucket.com/albums/s428/VoetsT/Santos%20Tour%20down%20under%202012/41.jpg
The first attacked was the good one. A group of 8 riders were in the BOTD. According to plan, we have a man in it. It was (again) M. Brammeier. He is riding extremely strong in this race. The others are: L. Roberts, M. Mori, K. Lodewyck, L. Howard, L. Mondory, T. Veelers and S. Vanmarcke. The first intermediate sprint wasn’t a problem for him as nobody sprinted. So here you can see him in his beatifull Jayco sprint jersey “winning” the first sprint.

i1051.photobucket.com/albums/s428/VoetsT/Santos%20Tour%20down%20under%202012/42.jpg
On Smith Hill (the first mountain sprint of the day), it was duel between Howard and Brammeier, but our man won it with ease. So again 16 points for us.

i1051.photobucket.com/albums/s428/VoetsT/Santos%20Tour%20down%20under%202012/43.jpg
Here you can see the break on the downhill after Smith Hill while Brammeier needs some assistance from the team car.
The second intermediate sprint was for Roberts, Brammeier was second.
We took 4 points on Mengler Hil, Mori won before Robers and Veelers.
Movistar was in charge of the peloton and drove full gas to Mengler Hill. This causes some troubles for Cavendish he was slipping away in the peloton. But he never lost contact. Ciolek on the other hand had no problems at all.
There were some attack’s in the break and that was the end for Brammeier. 4 days in row in the break began to take its toll.

i1051.photobucket.com/albums/s428/VoetsT/Santos%20Tour%20down%20under%202012/44.jpg
But with 15km to go there was a mass fall in the peloton. The biggest victim was B. Wiggins. But luckily everybody made it to the finish.

i1051.photobucket.com/albums/s428/VoetsT/Santos%20Tour%20down%20under%202012/45.jpg
With 5km to go, we were in control. Vandewalle was doing the pace with Trentin, Fenn and Ciolek in his wheel. Movistar was keeping the GC leader at the front. Behind Ciolek there was a heavy battle between Cavendish an Kruopis for his wheel. But sadly for us it was Cav who won it. So it’s the same situation as yesterday.

i1051.photobucket.com/albums/s428/VoetsT/Santos%20Tour%20down%20under%202012/46.jpg
And guess what, It’s the same outcome. Ciolek was able to hold off Cav for a 2nd time. This time, the world champion wasn’t even close. This also means that he is the new GC leader.

Conclusion
What a fantastic day, especially the last 5 kilometres. When your team dominates like that it’s almost impossible to do better. The ochre leaders jersey is a nice surplus but the fight isn’t over yet. We will do everything to hold it of course.

I forgot to export the results so I can't show you who lost some time in the fall, sry Sad
Do you think I should raise the difficulty? I'm playing on normal but I think that it is to easy (because of the back-to-back wins).
Winners never quit, quitters never win.

It's difficult not to be happy when you're surrounded by Belgians. - Mark Cavendish

Pellizotti2
I definitely recommend playing on hard rather than normal. The difference isn't big at all.

Looking good so far. Smile

Nice win for Ciolek Banana

Hopefully he can keep the jersey, it'll be very tough though Wink

@ Pellizotti2: Ok, I will play on hard from now on. Glad you like it.
@ sutty68: Pfft yeah it's always fun to win a sprint and if cavendish is behind you it's even better.
@ francopell: Thanks for the banana Pfft you can see in the next report if I can keep the leader jersey (and yes it will be tough )

Santos Tour Down Under

Stage 5: McLaren Vale – Old Willunga Hill (151.5 km)
Profile and situation before the start
i1051.photobucket.com/albums/s428/VoetsT/Santos%20Tour%20down%20under%202012/5profile.jpg
This will not be an easy day with 2 times the Willunga Hill. Our main priority is to defend the leader jersey of Ciolek.

The race
i1051.photobucket.com/albums/s428/VoetsT/Santos%20Tour%20down%20under%202012/51.jpg
The BOTD was formed very quickly. It was a 18 man break with 2 famous names: J. Roelandts and J. Degenkolb. On the picture you can see that Ciolek is well surrounded by his teammates.

i1051.photobucket.com/albums/s428/VoetsT/Santos%20Tour%20down%20under%202012/52.jpg
M. Brammeier was the man who rode the whole day at the front of the peloton.
J. Degenkolb won the first sprint and A. Ravard the 2nd one.

i1051.photobucket.com/albums/s428/VoetsT/Santos%20Tour%20down%20under%202012/53.jpg
After the 2nd sprint, the tempo in the peloton increased a lost. With 40km to go everything was back together.

i1051.photobucket.com/albums/s428/VoetsT/Santos%20Tour%20down%20under%202012/54.jpg
But that was not to the liking of L. Y. Bak, K. Reus (2 man of the former break), C. Barredo and S. Pauwels. Pauwels had a bad time on the first climb of the Willunga Hill and lost contact.

i1051.photobucket.com/albums/s428/VoetsT/Santos%20Tour%20down%20under%202012/55.jpg
But the 3 others weren’t able to stay away and on the decent it was the time for Vandewalle. But he never got more than 10”.

i1051.photobucket.com/albums/s428/VoetsT/Santos%20Tour%20down%20under%202012/56.jpg
At the foot of the last climb, the peloton consists of 60 man. Ciolek was at the front but wasn’t able to follow R. Costa. His acceleration was phenomenal and he made a gap immediately. Ciolek only becomes 3rd 19” after Costa.

Conclusion
The result is quite good but the time difference is too big. It’s almost impossible to win this race but we fought until the last and that’s what matters. R. Costa was the strongest on the hills.
The team did everything perfect today, Pauwels and Vandewalle were very aggressive at the end and our young stars did everything they could before the first climb of Willunga Hill.

TomC
Costa was too strong Sad however it's still great result with Ciolek Wink

Ian Butler
Good racing, but you can't expect miracles, too bad!
However, with some more boni there's still a small chance at GC win, isn't there?
However, still a pretty good TDU for OPQS!

krzychu92
Nope. Probably no chances for gc win. As I remember on the last stage there are two intermediate sprints wit 3 seconds bonificats each one. So 6 seconds from intermediate sprints + 10sec from the finish line it's only 16. Still will need 8 more sec so probably gc is done now.

But 2nd place is realy great place for Ciolek Smile
