FDJ Reach for the Stars
Its a French Affair as FDJ - Bigmat reap the rewards
by: Barry Ryan
The first of Europes stage events saw the 42nd running of the Etoile de Besseges as teams put out varied strength rosters to compete in the 6 stage event in France.
Racing proved to be slow early on before a mass crash took care of many riders, leading to withdrawals either due to injury or time as the field was significantly reduced in number.
Above: The carnage leftover from the crash that wrecked the race for many riders and teams
This didnt stop the excitement at the front though as the home team of FDJ - Bigmat had a huge result with a pair of riders coming home in 1st and 2nd, as Bonnet squeezed out his team mate Geslin in the final sprint.
Above: Sprinting home, its Bonnet from Geslin for FDJ - Bigmat
Geslin said "We looked at each other and went for it, I think it helped us both to be there at the sprint, but William (Bonnet) had the legs on me today but I cant complain as its a good result for the team to start this tour"
Looking on at what could have been again was the Rabobank team and their disgruntled manager Albers Pansen who refused to talk to us after the race, as he saw 2 of his riders withdraw after tangling up in the mass crash, whilst at best they have a rider placed 69th and the team in 18th, as the Dutch teams woes continue.
Rabobank rider Bauke Mollema said "We let ourselves down, im not sure how we found ourselves in such a position as a team, but it is something we have to improve and work on over the rest of the race"

Hi! Great story and good luck for the coming races! Just a small advice: When you are riding the flat stages, you probably should use your sprinters (Breschel , Renshaw etc.) It's okay if you don't want use this, but I saw you were sprinting for L.L. Sánchez. Not the best idea. Best luck for the forthcoming races. |

FDJ win again as Geslin goes one better
by: Barry Ryan
All smiles once again in the FDJ - Bigmat camp as Anthony Geslin came home in his green points leader shirt to take Stage 2 of the race, a clear 11 seconds ahead of the rest of the field, as the French team secured another stage win as Geslin now leads both the General Classification and the Points Category, whilst FDJ - Bigmat head up the Team Classification rankings.
Above: A quick look back before he celebrates a comfortable stage win, its Geslin's race to lose now
FDJ - Bigmat Team Manager Marc Madiot said "Confidence is flowing through our team right now, all decisions we take are working in races and with Geslin in the form of his life, we are going to make the most of it and take this as far as we can"
The early pace in the stage was set by the struggling Rabobank team, their 5 man strong train pushed Maarten Tjallingii toward the Mountain Leaders Jersey as he notched 22pts and sits atop of a trio of Rabobank riders in the rankings, with Barredo and Martens making up the top 3.
However all the eyes are on FDJ as we head into stage 3 and they will hope that the crash the ruined Geslin's Tour Down Under will not rear its ugly head again for the team in the Etoile de Bessege.

Thor Puts Down The Hammer
BMC rider ends FDJ - Bigmat steak in Besseges
by: Barry Ryan
The heat is well and truly on in the Etoile de Besseges as Thor Hushovd of BMC Racing edged ahed in the sprint to win the 3rd stage and also put himself just 3" off the pace of Anthony Geslin who again finished in the Top 6 as his team continues to impose themselves on the race.
Above: Feel the 'Thor'ce as the BMC team collect the stage win in Besseges
In the Mountains category and the honour of wearing the Polka Dot jersey, its the Rabobank team who appear to be battling themselves as Maarten Tjallingii fell to the wayside in the stage as Danish rider Breschel moved to the top of the tree after setting out solo and collecting the necessary points.
Breschel spoke after the race "It was hard work out there going solo, but no one wanted to come with me and I felt strong enough to keep myself ahead. In the end I just collected the points by default as no one challenged me, so its good for me and the team that we keep this shirt, as our overall race effort is slowly becoming a farce"

Sky Too Swift After Pileup
Stage ruined by mass crash is won by Sky's Swift
by: Barry Ryan
Above: Sky's Swift enough in the stretch
A rain soaked stage caused another huge crash in the event as over 50 riders would get caught up in the incident which saw another 12 riders withdraw from the event for one reason or another.
On a more positive note (for Sky Procycling at least) was the finish of the stage that saw Sky's Ben Swift come through to upset Thor Hushovd as the 1st and 2nd placings from Stage 3 reversed in day 4s outcome.
Above: The picture tells 1000 words, as riders are massed all over the slippery road
Swift said "The drama seemed to unfold behind me, the crash took out people we thought could challenge and from that I saw my chance to get ahead and finish up in 1st. Of course the conditions played a huge part in how we raced today and the crash summed up what can happen if you are too aggresive when its wet"
Rabobank's Breschel continued to have a strong showing in the mountain stages and stretched out his points lead in the category, albeit he was a part of the huge fall later in the stage, but managed to re-seat his bike and finish. He said "Im OK, the fall caused me some problems but its minor and I will be back on my bike for Ales tomorrow"

Kristoff Outguns Greipel
German Greipel upset in sprint by Katusha's Kristoff
by: Barry Ryan
Not the most important race in the calender especially given its status with the UCI World Tour, however its a chance for teams to experiment with riders and situations in tough conditions and long involving stages.
Today we saw the upstart Kristoff further cement his standing in the sport by overcoming the sprint finish with Greipel of Lotto Belisol and take the opening stage in Palma after a race in which the peloton remained in tact.
Lotto's Greipel spoke after the race and said "He caught me out, I wasnt ready for his counter attack and he made it stick. In those situations if you have the momentum then its easier to win, he had that and credit to the Katusha team for placing him at the head of the sprint"
Above: Its a tight pack as Kristoff stays in touch with the Lotto team
Above: The sprint finish favours the brave and its Katusha's Kristoff who snatches the win
At the other end of the spectrum is yet another dismal effort by the Rabobank riders as although Pansen is still with the team for the Etoile de Bessege, he will surely not be happy with his teams efforts here in which 3 riders are already 10 minutes off the pace.

Breschel adds to his CV with a stage win in Ales
by: Barry Ryan
A quite remarkable stage in the penultimate ride of the Etoile de Besseges saw the Rabobank team make a statement after being pretty miserable for the whole of the race. Danish rider Breschel who has already impressed to take the Polka Dot jersey, stretched out a healthy lead to sprint home with change to spare to take the stage.
Alongside this 3 other Rabobank riders finished in the Top 6 as the Dutch team finally came good on the promise made by new Manager Albers Pansen to collect their first '1st' place of the season.
Above: Breshcel all alone as he sets the pace en route to a solid win
Above: BMC Racing protect their leader Hushovd who remains in the Yellow Jersey for the final stage
The main feature of the race though was the continued presence of Thor Hushovd in the Yellow Jersey as his BMC team worked hard to ensure that he remained in control of the race with a +9" advantage over Anthony Geslin of FDJ - Bigmat with just the one stage remaining.
A delighted Hushovd said "The team were great, I cant ask for anymore from my team mates they have been exceptional and its now down to me to ensure I come home tomorrow as the winner"

Thanks, the plan worked... stick with the peloton until the top of the big climb and then punch away... Breschel was the only one able to ride it out alone in the end, the others got caught but put in solid finishes... its a shame that we are so far behind overall. |
