The Race
128km to go
The BOTD is ascending the Mur de Huy for the first of three times. This 14-rider big group features a few strong hilly riders, as Grega Bole and Robert Kiserlovski. This is the reason that the peloton does't let the margin get more than 4'30.
35km to go
The BOTD gets caught pretty early, and when the peloton is heading to Huy for the 2nd ascend for its Mur, Alejandro Valverde crashes in the descend of the Cote d'Ahin. He'll loose contact with the 80-rider big peloton, but can finish the race.
29km to go
The peloton has finished the 2nd ascend of the Mur de Huy, when crowd favourite Philippe Gilbert attacks. It's not certain if it is a real attack, or if he just wants to test his legs. None of the other favourites responds, nor do we, and Team Sky brings Gilbert back in.
10km to go
The race remains pretty dull for 15 more kilometres, but at the penultimate climb of the day, the Cote d'Ereffe, Gilbert attacks again. This time, some of the other favourites react, namely Michele Scarponi, Fränk Schleck and Roman Kreuziger.
1km to go
Again, Team Sky is controlling the race (with riders as Michel Kreder, Rigoberto Uran and Janez Brajkovic, it isn't that hard to do so) and brings them all back in. The riders have finished the long descend and have arrived in Huy. At the foot of the 3rd and last ascend of the Mur de Huy, Michele Scarponi and Ben Hermans are in the leading positions, closely followed by Joaquím Rodríguez, Michel Kreder, Andy Schleck and ...... Gregory Bernard! The young Luxembourg surprise of the AGR is feeling pretty well today (daily form +1), and is our leader, as Vanendert is having a bad day (daily form _5).
500m to go
Scarponi has started his sprint too early and is falling behind. Astana's Belgian Ben Hermans is taking over, but also he didn't wait enough. Behind him, especially Andy Schleck is having more speed at the steepest part of the hill (18%). Bernard is doing great in 7th place and is gaining a few places!
Finish
Last year, he was pretty pissed off, as he was the best of the peloton, but they didn't catch the 3 breakaways and he had to settle for the 4th place. But this year, Andy Schleck is the first to cross the finish line, being the first Luxembourg rider since Kim Kirchen in 2008 who wins the Flèche Wallonne.
Hermans manages to stay in 2nd place, beating Rodríguez and Cunego at the line. Behind them, Gregory Bernard manages to score another 5th place in an Ardennes classic! And we musn't forget to mention Peter Sagan, who finishes in 11th place (fitness 80)!

The Winner
Word from the DS
Wow, another great 5th place for Gregoy Bernard. This guy is developing into one of the best puncheurs / hilly riders of the entire field, already in his 2nd year of professional cycling! But still, we can't expect too much from him in Liège - Bastogne - Liège, as that race is much harder than both the Amstel and La Flèche.

The climbers that won't participate in the Ardennes classics, but that want to get in shape for the Giro d'Italia, are present in the Giro del Trentino. This very hard 4-stage race in the Northeastern part of Italy features a flat time trial, a hilly stage and 2 mountain stages. No wonder that a pure climber as José Rujano took the GC-win last year.

Our Team
The Favourites
*** Cadel Evans (Katusha), Wilco Kelderman, Peter Velits (Astana).
** Mattia Cattaneo (Farnese Vini), Domenico Pozzovivo (Colnago), Simon Spilak (Lampre).
* Jérome Coppel (Acqua et Sapone), Kevin De Weert (Androni), Daniele Pietropolli (Omega Pharma).
Our Goal
To get Wilco Kelderman in a better shape. But a top 5 should be doable.
Stage 1
The Giro del Trentino kicks off with a 13km flat ITT from Riva del Garda to Arco. One of the first riders to start is Nespresso's Dane Alex Rasmussen. His time of 17'49 will last for a long time and not even the GC-guns of Cadel Evans and Wilco Kelderman can beat that time. So Rasmussen wins the first stage, followed by Frantisek Rabon (Omega Pharma) at '8 and Sébastien Rosseler at '11.
From the GC-contenders, Kelderman rides the best ITT (5th at '13), followed by Velits (+ '20) and Evans (+ '26).
Results and GC

I never commented in your story, but always followed. For a good cause I'll help out to reach the numbers that this great story deserves.
Nice places with Bernard and good luck for Trentino. |
