Thats all I wanted to know Shonak. Diego Rosa, definitely not near as known as the top 3 doing very well in the GC and the Youth Classification.

Gooooooaaaaaallllllll!!! And the Giro is now a resounding success for FDJ. Pierrick putting himself in the picture for a Tour spot as well.

Time gaps are always questionable in PCM. It comes with every version ever and should be expected.

Stage 18
i1066.photobucket.com/albums/u408/EPICsho/EPIC%20Giro%202013/s18_zps355c1334.jpg

Today’s 19 kilometer long Mountain Time Trial has all its focus set upon the climb up to Polsa San Valentino, starting from Mori. The climb starts relatively with gradients of 5 – 7% until the first intermediate. There is then a short flatter section, but no one would dare to call it flat anyway. It is right followed by another part of around 7-9% gradient, granting it the Max Slope of 9.3%. The riders climb in total 1040 meters today in 16.1 kilometers. There were existed certainly tougher MTTs in the history of Grand Tours, but it follows after almost 3 weeks of tough racing and it’ll be interesting to has the most left in his tank just as much as who’s the smartest with his energy spending today.

i1066.photobucket.com/albums/u408/EPICsho/EPIC%20Giro%202013/2014-05-0118_56_06-Greenshot_zps0daf30fd.jpg

Not his kind of terrain. Italy’s future sprinting hope, Carlo Calzone (AND), struggles up the climb. Uff aaah. Jure Golcer from Team Tirol has meanwhile impressed everybody by setting an incredible best time which is not beaten by anyone close yet. The first one to take over his spot is Thomas Peterson from Team Argos-Shimano.

i1066.photobucket.com/albums/u408/EPICsho/EPIC%20Giro%202013/2014-05-0119_04_55-Greenshot_zpsdba12964.jpg

Jorge Azanza and Juan Jose Oroz have not been renowned for being TT specialists, but both of them did a great mountain TT here and even cracked the Top 5. Their initial team leader De Las Campos (EUS) breaks the intermediate time by Poels and seems like he will get another fine result.

i1066.photobucket.com/albums/u408/EPICsho/EPIC%20Giro%202013/2014-05-0119_06_31-Greenshot_zps8b349fb3.jpg

The only part where Spartacus is likely to get a good time: The start of the race, flat. For the winner of the first time trial, this is certainly not a TT to his liking. And while De Las Campos beats the current best time, there’s another rider close to taking his spot already: Rigoberto Uran took the new intermediate best time, and when the Colombian finishes the stage, it looks like he’ll have the best time for some time now.

i1066.photobucket.com/albums/u408/EPICsho/EPIC%20Giro%202013/2014-05-0119_09_42-Greenshot_zps4a4fd4b7.jpg

We have not seen much of Basso in the last weeks, but here he gets the best spot amongst all those tivosi, and the cameras are sure to catch him. He currently holds 12th, and while it’s unlikely that he can improve further in the classification, he will want to defend his 12th place towards Gesink, who is riding in some great shape lately.

i1066.photobucket.com/albums/u408/EPICsho/EPIC%20Giro%202013/2014-05-0119_11_16-Greenshot_zps64f02a58.jpg

Just as Nibali sets off, Ivan Trofimov is the first rider to beat the time of Uran at the intermediate. With the Russian now there, we are eagerly awaiting the time changes of the favourites at the first intermediate.

i1066.photobucket.com/albums/u408/EPICsho/EPIC%20Giro%202013/2014-05-0119_12_48-Greenshot_zps9ceb1e65.jpg

The old guns are doing good so far: Ivan Basso holds the current best intermediate time, Evans is narrowly behind him. However, the real decider of this stage is yet to come. While it’s rather close until the first intermediate, the second part is the one responsible for the time gaps.

i1066.photobucket.com/albums/u408/EPICsho/EPIC%20Giro%202013/2014-05-0119_13_58-Greenshot_zps2888f1af.jpg

Or, nevermind, that is to say until we saw Quintana flying through: He is 35 seconds faster already than Basso here! An flawless first part of the Colombian up until now, what will he produce on the ensuing 10 kilometers? He is hot for the stage win, and he’s wants to come closer to the Top 5 obviously.

i1066.photobucket.com/albums/u408/EPICsho/EPIC%20Giro%202013/s18_t_zpsef81b596.jpg

Quintana’s time remains untouched, for now. Closely. Nibali is only 3 seconds behind, and Porte doesn’t lose too much either. Kreuziger, Basso, Hesjedal, Trofimov and Uran complete the closest purseus, all with quite some gap already. Just like Giro’s second placed Betancur, who is ahead of the superior Time Trialist Wilco Kelderman, who, in turn, completes the Top 10. Narrowly outside the Top 10 are Evans and Scarponi. Kiserlovski and Pellizotti are rather down the the classification so far, but those are very small time gaps and it should be more tha possible to overcome some of the challengers.

i1066.photobucket.com/albums/u408/EPICsho/EPIC%20Giro%202013/2014-05-0119_19_24-Greenshot_zps35aa6244.jpg

A fine performance by Trofimov sees him take the lead, by 0 seconds onto Uran! Maybe a bit of a surprise today the Russian, but he has performed very consistently so far, with the only flaw that he almost never could get lost time back. Unfortunately for Team Katusha, his sunlight spot doesn’t last long, as Ivan Basso is 4 seconds faster than him.

i1066.photobucket.com/albums/u408/EPICsho/EPIC%20Giro%202013/2014-05-0119_21_37-Greenshot_zps663962c6.jpg

Androni surely expected more from Pellizotti today, but with a 10th place, 31 seconds down on his close rival Kelderman, everything is still possible for the Top 10 of course! Behind him, Evans is coming along, doing much better than him, and finishing 10 seconds behind Basso.

i1066.photobucket.com/albums/u408/EPICsho/EPIC%20Giro%202013/2014-05-0119_22_55-Greenshot_zps259a5b28.jpg

We see Quintana flying here again – and overtaking Scarponi on the last kilometer! Of course, he utterly destroys the current best time by Basso, by coming in at 38’59’’. This puts him with 1’16 ahead of Basso and everybody else. Movistar promised fireworks for the last week and today, Quintana surely delivered. But how will the competition react?

i1066.photobucket.com/albums/u408/EPICsho/EPIC%20Giro%202013/2014-05-0119_24_37-Greenshot_zpsa5f8a0c3.jpg

A bad day for Betancur, who is set to get caught by Vincenzo Nibali. The Shark of Messina is likely going to seal the deal today, if there even was any doubt in the last days.

i1066.photobucket.com/albums/u408/EPICsho/EPIC%20Giro%202013/2014-05-0119_25_48-Greenshot_zpsf5d424bb.jpg

Porte prefers to sprint it out, while Hesjedal just creeps over the finish line. The Australian seemd to have great reserves left and is the closest so far by 30 seconds onto Quintana. Hesjedal lost, just like Kreuziger, over a minute today on the Colombian.

i1066.photobucket.com/albums/u408/EPICsho/EPIC%20Giro%202013/2014-05-0119_27_05-Greenshot_zpsce09d402.jpg

Nibali is so close. To the finish, to Betancur. Bu while the finish comes closer, the Colombian just keeps to stay ahead of him. The Shark is missing those last centimeters, but frankly, maybe it’s not that important. What is important is that he finishes the stage on second place, 6 seconds behind Quintana. But in turn, he probably won the Giro today, after Betancur lost considerable time, 1’25 down on Quintana.

i1066.photobucket.com/albums/u408/EPICsho/EPIC%20Giro%202013/2014-05-0119_29_04-Greenshot_zps77948139.jpg

The Giro d’Italia hasn’t been a story of pure success so far for Movistar, but they have three stage wins on their account now. Ups and Downs are part of a Grand Tour, and Nairo’s second stage win here in Italy, sees him, at least today, on the top step again. In the General Classification, Betancur loses Nibali out of sight, and is now a total of 3 minutes down. Hardly imaginable that Betancur can get this time back at any point. Wilco Kelderman pushes Pellizotti out of Top 10 for now. By now, there are some big time differences between the GT contenders, but with two tough mountain stages still up for grabs, many riders can still gain or lose one or two places - and thus maybe decide over an accomplished sponsor or UCI goal.

Come on Wilco, come on!

Great report for a TT by the way, those are always hard
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

I must be dreaming, Basso finally did something noteworthy. Bit too late though. Pfft

If there is one thing I can't complain about then it is the missing spotlight for my team.
But I can't understand how the new UCI can deny these time gaps again?!
Propably some old fart made a really big bet against a top 5 GC result of Quintana...

Also great to have a third stage win here. One more and I am somehow pleased with the Giro despite of that terrible GC result ( Sorry guys, I don't aim for ending up eleventh like others Wink ).
A Big Thank You To All MG Reporters!

Luis Leon Sanchez
Come on Pellizotti. Time to attack on remaining stages. And Rosa drops to 17th in GC and 5th in Youth, will still be a great result for him.

Stromeon
Kreuziger been doing well past couple of days, OK the time gaps didn't work out in our favour in stage 17 but he still gained a bit of time on others to help secure his position and a fourth in the TT is good as well. Now the big question is can he either avoid losing two minutes on Quintana on the last two mountain stages or gain a minute on Hesjedal? The way Quintana's being going this final week somehow makes me think the latter option is more likely... Pfft

I'm not really pleased with the report, but 19 kilometers just gives too little to report basically. Guys just climbing all for themselves, and well, the GC fight is more or less over with only some position changes left, so... I have preferred the long, first Time Trial with two intermediates, which was won by Cancellara. I felt the report was more complete.

Hmm, one bad day from Porte, that's all that Hesjedal needs for a Podium. On the other hand, he can't afford to drop past Kreuziger and Quintana either, if we want to fullfill our goal...

Great report btw, really enjoyed reading it. Wink
