Ryan Eastman - Bontrager 2013 February
roturn
@Ian: It`S quite surprising to see him that long without problems. Only reason can be the good form and the slow pace of the peloton.
@sutty/Freitas: Indeed he is having a good race there. The next stage is flat, so also no review. Then a medium hard hill stage, where I really need to gain time. Otherwise the final ITT will move us backwards.

Giro della Valle d’Aosta

Stage 5 - Châtillon - Torgnon (152,4km)
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Aosta_5_2-1524.jpg

This surely is the queens stage of this years edition. Again we must climb 3 mountains but this time it will be steep until the finish so we surely expect the biggest gaps today. Parker has proven his good form and so we hope he can keep his top5.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Aosta_5_3.jpg

5 riders in the breakaway. With Gerrits (+6'29) and Salzinger (+5'06) there are two dangerous riders in there. Especially first is a decent climber and should be watched.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Aosta_5_6.jpg

Farnese is doing the most work going up the first climb. Androni and Movistar CT are helping them from time to time.
And also great to see that there are quite a few Americans at the road side and obviously they are cheering for us.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Aosta_5_8.jpg

On the descent Betancur, Nino and Gonzales Arribas created a small gap. In especially first is a big contender for the overall win. So it`s time for Stuyven to chase them as long as he still has the energy for it.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Aosta_5_10.jpg

Bad news for Nippo. Their leader and 2nd overall Baliani crashed in the descent and is 3min behind the peloton and with the pace becoming higher it`s looking very bad for him.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Aosta_5_12.jpg

Still going up the 2nd climb the trio has created a 2'43min gap and almost reached the breakaway.
Time for Farnese to send their whole team to the front as Stuyven`s climbing skills are obviously not good enough.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Aosta_5_14.jpg

Totally exhausted I go over the top but more important I was able to stay in the first group. So I use the opportunity and bring some water to Parker as the others are already behind.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Aosta_5_16.jpg

With 13km Betancur is losing contact to the break. This comes surprising as he should be the strongest there but obviously the team manager sent him back when realizing that teh gap is becoming smaller and smaller and he should save some energy for later attacks.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Aosta_5_18.jpg

With 10km to go my job is done. I did a lot to support Parker today. Now he has to go on his own.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Aosta_5_20.jpg

Actually the main reason was Parker as he decided to higher the pace at that moment. In the last mountain stages the pace was too slow to really create big gaps. So this is the day he wants to change this.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Aosta_5_22.jpg

This brings Movistar CT to the front. Just when Parker started to create a small gap they highered the pace another time and bring him back.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Aosta_5_24.jpg

With 3,4km the breakaway is caught and we see strong attacks.
Merino, Miholjevic, Sella, Galviz and Serpa.
Parker was a bit surprised and is going his own pace.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Aosta_5_27.jpg

He wasn`t able to come to the first riders as these were far too strong today. But being in 6th position he has a great position with 1km to go.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Aosta_5_29.jpg

Galviz wins the stage ahead of Serpa. So even without Alarcon they are still on a high level.
With a small gap Merino comes in third as the big surprise today.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Aosta_5_30.jpg

Parker wins the sprint for 4th and arrives together with Miholjevic and Zakarin. This is enough to secure the top5 today.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Aosta_5_32.jpg

I really becoming a climber in this race. Totally out of energy I come in as 48th 11'40 behind Galviz but will keep my top40 overall.

Ian Butler
Great day for Parker, good day for Ryan Wink
Curious what the ITT will bring us!

dienblad
Totally agree with Ian Butler! Great report. Only curious what climbs where in the route.

Another Great performance from Parker Wink

andy222c
Parker did really well today, and he had a great finishing sprint! Smile
Eastman also did really well today, getting over the last top and then showing fighterwill, fetching waterbottles to the other guys Smile

Parker is doing really good.

Thanks all.

@dienblad: First is the Col Tsecore, 2nd the Col Saint Pantaleon and the final is up to Torgon. Here is the real 2011 profile: ticker.live-radsport.ch/images/11082315898-hoehenprofil-giro-ciclistico-della-valle-dacuteaosta-mont-blanc-2011---etappe-5.jpg

That late in the season fitness is everything. So Parker and Eastman do better than others, who already rode 70 race days obviously. Smile

USA Pro Cycling Challenge

Stage 6 - Golden - Boulder (158,5km)
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/USAPCC_6_1-1585.jpg

Today is the stae where we want to create a gap to others to gain time before the time trial. The final climb is not that long and so also race leader El Fares must be named today.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/USAPCC_6_2.jpg

Scarponi attacked late and immediately created a gap which he kept until the line. Great win for the Italian.
Dombrowski realized that Boswell might have better legs and also is the stronger time trialist. So we rode for Ian today. He tried to follow a small group of riders around Scarponi but couldn`t make it completely.
In the end Ian arrived on a great 4th but also due to the 5th by Dombrowski the gap was obviously not big enough to count as single group. So all the next riders including El Fares are within the same time. Bad luck for us today and surely a decision you could discuss a lot.

Giro della Valle d’Aosta

Stage 6 - Champdepraz ITT (9,1km)
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Aosta_6_4-91.jpg

How could it be different. Also the last stage is mountaineous. A very tough mountain time trial with lots of 10+% sections.
Who was able to save most energy and kept the best form?

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Aosta_6_7.jpg

Although we are in Italy far away from home, I had the feeling as if most fans were cheering for us Americans. An incredible amount of US fans here.
It didn`t help me to make a top result today but seeing at my actual climbing skills I was far above my expectations and end this race far better than expected.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Aosta_6_9.jpg

Alarcon has set the new best time but due to his crash he is far behind.
And Parker really has a perfect day. His legs are feeling very well and he is coming closer and closer to Zakarin.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Aosta_6_11.jpg

Going around the last corner he almost had him and this gave him some more motivation and he indeed overtook the Russian just before the finish. Well done. And by looking at the result he was even 14s faster than Alarcon!!!

Also Galviz and Serpa weren`t able to beat his time and so Dale is celebrating his 2nd season victory. Also he moves up the ranking and finishes on a brilliant 2nd overall and only 2s behind race winner Jose Serpa breaking the South American dominance here. What a performance by him today.
Also he takes the point and U25 jersey.

I finish as 37th overall after being 20th today which is a great result for me in such a hard race.
Hopefully this will give me some mroe experience to make the next step soon.

USA Pro Cycling Challenge

Stage 7 - Golden - Boulder (18,7km)
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/USAPCC_7-187.jpg

The USA Pro Cycling Challenge ends with a flat time trial. Not ideal for our GC leaders as they don`t belong to the strongest against the clock and the mountains haven`t been very selective.
But it`s another opportunity to shine for Lawson Craddock, who peaked for this stage.

As expected Ian and in especially Joe lost time today and won`t be able to improve their position. Ian at least secures us a top10 overall.
But Lawson made this day special for us. Once again he is having an excellent day and beats the best times.
Nobody is able to be faster and so we can celebrate another stage win in one of our home races. This is also a good thing for our sponsor as missing the podium here is the first failed goal for us this season.

Tour of East Java

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Java_logo.jpg

The Tour of East Java is an Indonesian cycling race, first held in 2005. It`s raced in the province Jawa Timur and is ranked as 2.2 in the UCI Asia. In it`s 7 appearances it`s won by Iran cyclists five times with record winner Ghader Mizbani taking two overall wins.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Java_1.jpg
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Java_2.jpg
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Java_3.jpg

The race looks pretty flat on the first view. But by looking closer you see some tough hills in especially in front of the finish. This must be our goal to make the ascent as hard as possible to avoid any sprint finishes.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Java_team.jpg

With Dombrowski and Parker we have to strong puncheurs here. Both might try something on the hills but they might need to work together to be successful.
I will have some kind of free role in our team. I am free to go into breakaways and maybe reach a high overall that way.
Brown, Avis and De Buyst complete our roster.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Java_startlist.jpg

With Stroetinga, Damiani, Pedersen or Richeze some of the fastest CT sprinters are at the start. This won`t make it very easy for us to create gaps as these teams might try to control everything.
With Schumacher, Van Rensburg or Dennis we also have a good amount of puncheurs. So the favourites are wide open and can`t really be mentioned.

Team Goals

- Top10 overall
- Stage podium

My Goals

- Successful breakaway

Great performances at USAPCQ and Giro della Valle d’Aosta, i enjoyed the reports and wins from Parker, Craddock much. Smile
Good luck in Indonesia, it will be hard to make some selection, but with attacking approach all is possible.
I'll be back

Tour of East Java

Stage 1 - Surabaya - Grezik (164,2km)
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Stages/Java_1_4-1642.jpg

Welcome to Indonesia. I can`t remember being in a more exotic country this season or even in my career. So the atmosphere is totally new to me. It`s different to other countries for sure but pretty cool.
By looking on todays profile it looks like a sprinter stage. Our chance is the breakaway or the hill ahead of the finish. We had no time to check the hill but it`s supposed to be very steep and could bring many sprinters into some trouble.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Stages/Java_1_8.jpg

Brown was our first option for today. But all his attempts were brought back again. So the team manager decided to send me and luckily we were successful.
Together with Ortega (EPM), Vernaeckt (Geofco) and Giraldo (Movistar CT) I was able to create a gap.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Stages/Java_1_10.jpg

Nippo and Koga do the most for Richeze and Stroetinga. With 90km to go we have a 7min gap.
And as you can see here, it`s already very steep. 8% at the moment but some 15% sections are here as well.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Stages/Java_1_12.jpg

It wasn`t meant to be today. With only 9km to go we were caught. At least I was able to get some bonus seconds to be high in the rankings. I just need to stay inside the peloton now.
Unfortunately it became very uncomfortable now. Light wind and heavy rain doesn`t make the race easier, which is actually not bad for us.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Stages/Java_1_14.jpg

Parker pushed the pace going up the hill and Dombrowski always stayed behind the first row.
And indeed the hill was selective with 9 riders got clear including Joe Dombrowski, Eeckhout, Richeze, Angarita, Pedersen and 4 of his team mates. So some sprinters obviously did know about that danger and gave everything to stay in front but now look pretty exhausted.
Christina Watches with 5 riders in here did make a perfect run today.
A group of 13 including Parker, me and some others are a bit behind but the peloton is just behind us.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Stages/Java_1_16.jpg

With 1,5km to go the group created a gap of 1'15 and will definitely win this stage. Pedersen still has a team mate ahead of him when Richeze is coming on the left with Dombrowski just behind, who looks fresher than the sprinters.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Stages/Java_1_19.jpg

And indeed a climber beats some sprinters today. The effort to join this group was obviously far too much for the weaker puncheurs and so they were lucky enough to be in that group to save the GC fight.

A perfect stage for us. I got into the break and will be 11th overall now due to the bonus seconds, while Joe leads the race after a fantastic win. He has great chances to stay in the top5 now of course as the peloton lost more than 1min today.
