Just played an interesting 5th stage of The Tour de Bretagne. 15 riders broke away, the highest on GC was 8 minutes behind, the breakaway's lead extended to 13 minutes at its height and ended up staying away coming in 3.30 minutes ahead of the peloton.

So breakaway's do work on occasion with the right combination of circumstances as in real-life.
