The Race

The Giro dell'Appennino is one of the minor Italian one day spring classics. In its long history, it has had famous winners like Francesco Moser or Fausto Coppi, more recently, the likes of Damiano Cunego or Gilberto Simoni wrote their names in the race palmarès. Due to its date in mid april, it's often used as a preparation for the Giro d'Italia.

The course is pretty hilly but because of the last 30 kms being totally flat, a sprint from a smaller group seems probable. But maybe, a strong rider is able to break free on the hills and manage to stay away.

Liquigas compete with a very, very strong team. They will be hard to beat. It seems like only Katusha around Leonardo Bertagnolli might be capable of that, but the density of second row riders behind them is very high so we might see a surprise.

i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/CT%20-%20Appennino/Fahrer.jpg

We're here with a very strong squad, basically having both top favorites. We simply want our first extreme win on a road stage!

Report

i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/CT%20-%20Appennino/Profil.jpg

We controlled the pace all day and no break could create a really notable gap. Only once, four riders around Alexander Efimkin (Type 1) and Mikhail Ignatiev (Katusha) got about two minutes away but on the longest climb of the day, our helpers made a terrible pace which resulted in the escapees being caught and caused the pack to split.

Eventually, only 22 riders led the field onto the last flat kilometers. Both Lampre and Katusha were present with a couple of riders while Peter Sagan was only accompanied by Damiano Cunego. A couple of riders tried to attack but either Cunego or Katusha brought them back everytime.

In the sprint, Damiano Cunego was the perfect lead out. He shot to the front with 2 kms to go and no one could follow. Well, except for Peter Sagan of course, who held his wheel and overtook him on the last meters. They had so much advance that Cunego could even hold on to his second spot in front of the chasing Daniele Pietropolli. A fantastic race for us.

Second win for Peter Sagan in two days!

Peter Sagan is the man! After his great streak in last autumn, he's back with his first classics win in 2012. Looks very promising for the Ardennes!

Liquigas Resumé

Great! Just great! A perfect race for us. Our helpers did a very nice job destroying the peloton and Cunego and Sagan performed the perfect sprint. What can you want more?

+++ Unicredit replaces Liquigas from 2013 on +++

After Liquigas and Cannondale announced to end their involvement with the Italian cycling team, the team's administration was very busy looking for new sponsors. And as a spokesman stated today, they have been successful! The Italian financial group Unicredit agreed to take over the exclusive main sponsorship and will be the name sponsor from next season on. The contract runs for three years and accounts for 5.3M Euros per year – a raise of about 8% in comparison to this year.

blog.intotheminds.com/wp-content/uploads/unicredit-logo-470x352.jpg

The team continues to be Italian. Unicredit is also interested in the German and Austrian market, good for someone like Dominik Nerz.

+++ First transfer rumours +++

Meanwhile, the transfer gossip factory starts to work overtime. Several top riders whose contracts expire this year are rumoured to other teams:

Above all, recently fourth of Paris-Roubaix, Heinrich Haussler might leave Sky already after one year! The French ProContinental team Saur is on the best way to promotion and seem to plan already for WorldTour as they announced their interest in the Australian.

The Swiss BMC Team struggled last year and they continue to do so this year. As a consequence, they seemingly want to enhance their already old team with another aged rider. They indicated interest in Ivan Basso.

Not aged at all is Fabio Duarte, who can be considered as one of the world's best climbers. His contract at Geox ends this year. In case he doesn't sign with his current team again, he won't have trouble to find a new one as he aroused attention of both Nokia and Rabobank.

In contrary to those rumours, Omega Pharma – Lotto already stated to do everything to resign Philippe Gilbert. They obviously won't let him go!

2.bp.blogspot.com/_lZtaj2SmbKE/TVH_xDpCi0I/AAAAAAAAAFY/rjUjx2Y1BGg/s1600/r218166_852881.jpg

After his team change, Haussler wasn't as successful as last year this spring. Reasons enough to change again?

Good to see UniCredit taking your sponsorship: just like you said, Dominik may have a chance to be one of the future key-riders of this team Wink

FuglsangxTH3
Good deal for your And maybe can dominik play à bigger role in this team
i41.tinypic.com/ig9r2w.jpg

cunego59
Thank you both. I like the sponsor, mostly for two reason: Firstly, I love the jersey Wink And in the long terms, I want to establish a German WorldTour team with Dominik as their leader (although I doubt I'll ever get so far^^). And as T-Mobile seems to fail a bit, this might be the base for another try.

I have an important question for you, readers: As you see, I currently make a report for every minor race. On the one hand, I enjoy writing about the whole team, on the other hand this is still a story about Dominik, so if you say you're not interested in those small races, I would maybe skip them, only make small reports about WT races and come quicker to Dominik's races. What do you think?

rorzcp
Only Dominik Races but still do mini reports on races eg. Only report one picture per Race(excluding big races where you can do as many as you like)

Teddy The Creator
Well I personally like the way the reports are going now, but I think soem of these small one day classics can be simmed, or atleast only very short reports, stating the final few kms. Good to see UniCredit as the new sponsor, and also, I can't wait for UniCredit - Cannondale in 2013 with D. NErz as main leader for TdF! Cool

dienblad
I agree with rorzcp. This is a one-rider story, so be careful not to slide into a team-story!
imageshack.us/a/img171/3023/petronasmesig2.png

aas169
I personally like the fact that even though it's a one rider story you still make reports about the whole teamSmile

FuglsangxTH3
I totally agree with rorczp make longer stories over THE races that dominik ride and only the results or smaller reports of THE other races

I have a proposal: I'll keep the reports for the WorldTour races as they are and I will summarize the continental races in one report at the end of the month. Then you still get a medium detailed review of the important races but I'm also quicker at the races for Dominik. How does that sound?

tsmoha
Sounds good Wink But on the other hand: If you're enjoying all of the detailed reports, you can stick to it, if you ask me Smile Sure, it's a a "one-rider-story", but why not develop this into a "all-for-one-story", if you know, what I mean Wink

cunego59
Yeah, I will think about a bit. Anyway, some reports are already made in the current style, so they will come the way they were. More opinions are always appreciated!

The Race

Paris – Camembert is one of those mediocrely hard one day races in the spring that is used as a preparation for the Giro. It has a quite long tradition going back to the year 1937 and is still dominated by French riders. Laurent Brochard won the race three times between 2001 and 2005 and is the record winner.

The first half of the race is completely flat, then the riders face a couple of small but steep hills. They provide the possibilty for the hilly riders to attack, but a bunch sprint with a good end for a punchy sprinter.

In case of a mass sprint, the likes of Danilo Napolitano, Leonardo Duque or Jonas Aaen Jörgensen are the top favorites. Otherwise, Damiano Cunego, Peter Sagan or someone like Jan Bakelandts might decide the race in his favor with a late attack.

We'll try to make the race as hard as possible to eliminate the pure sprinters. Then, either Peter Sagan can go for a good place in a bunch sprint or Damiano Cunego makes a late attack.

Report

Pretty early, a very strong and large 14 men break including the likes of Jelle Vanendert (Omega) and Domenico Pozzovivo (Colnago). They created a very decent gap although Liquigas tried to keep a good pace.

As the escapees entered the last 20 kms, Liquigas' domestiques managed to decrease the advance to 1'30. Also, the group split and only six riders were left in front. But surprisingly, and unfortunatly for us, the gap suddenly started to grow again. In a desperate try, Damiano Cunego used the last ascent to attack.

Although he rode very well, Cunego couldn't catch up with the original break. At least, he stayed in front of the pack and finished seventh. Up in front, Jelle Vanendert grabbed the win rather easy. Pozzovivo could only sprint to the fourth spot, just behind the Japanese champion Takashi Miyazawa.

In the sprint of the main pack, Lloyd Mondory won. Peter Sagan didn't care too much and eventually finished 12th.

A breakaway win at a one day race, that is quite unusual. Jelle Vanendert used that to grab his second season win.

The Winner

www.nzz.ch/images/jelle_vanendert_fullSize_1.11435291.1310837993.jpg

Jelle Vanendert has a pretty good season so far. His major result was the stage win in Catalunya, which brought him the fifth overall. Approaching the Ardennes, he seems to be in great shape to support Philippe Gilbert.

Liquigas Resumé

We surely aimed for the win here. And we would have won indeed if it wasn't for the break. It was unattentive to let them go in the first place and we werent strong enough to bring them back in the last kilometers. Nevertheless, Damiano Cunego showed a strong performance and looks good for his highlight, the Ardennes, later this month.

Your idea over THE reports sounds good

Too bad, the break made it here... Cunego probably would have won, just like you said.. still a Top-10 Wink
