A very strong team for the Vuelta, Menchov will get a lot of help in the mountain stages!

Thanks Tuco the ugly and DenisMenchov08! Small mistake . The form of the riders is after the first stage but he will reach his topform during the 2nd and most important part of the vuelta.
Vuelta a Espana: Stage 1
Benidorm - Benidorm 16.00km
The Vuelta starts with a 16 km long time trial for teams around the famous seaside resort Benidorm. No big differences are expected but we hope to finish in the upper half of all teams.
Team Geox - TMC
21. D.Menchov
22. D.Blanco
23. J.J.Cobo
24. D.De la Fuente
25. F.Duarte
26. D.Gutiérrez Gutiérrez
27. D.Ratto
28. C.Sastre
29. R.Valls
Helped by strong rides from Menchov, Sastre and Blanco, we finish with a good feelind. But we don't have any idea from the strength of our time as we were the first team to start. Let's see what the others do...
20'56"
Movistar Team
41. V.Kiryienka
42. J.V.García Acosta
43. J.Herrada
44. P.Lastras
45. Á.Madrazo
46. C.Oyarzun
47. J.J.Rojas
48. B.Samoilau
49. E.Sanz
Movistar brought a strong team. Kiryienka is their strongest GC rider and should be able to get a top 10 with good summort from his teammates. Lastras could always take a victory after a succesfull breakaway and Rojas proved in the Giro that he is world class in sprinting. Can he get his first stage win in his home tour?
Kiryienka, Herrada and Oyarzun are good time trialers and aided by the experience from Garcia Acosta and Lastras, they ride a good TT.
20'22"
Pro Team Astana
181. J.Jufré
182. A.Davis
183. M.Gourov
184. V.Iglinskiy
185. T.Kangert
186. R.Kireyev
187. Y.Nepomnyachshiy
188. S.Renev
189. T.Vaitkus
Astana clearly doesn't want to get good results in the Vuelta. Their only hopes for maybe a top 5 in a sprint stage are Davis and Vaitkus. This team even has nobody who can be succesfull in a break.
None of these riders is known to be a good TT'er so nothing is expected from them in the TTT. They still go all out and ride to an average time.
20'49"
Saxo Bank SunGard
81. C.A.Sørensen
82. J.Bellis
83. M.Boaro
84. B.Cooke
85. K.Klostergaard
86. G.Larsson
87. R.Majka
88. R.Porte
89. B.Vandborg
Saxo Bank's team leader and superstar Alberto Contador crashed during the Tour de France and isn't recovered yet so he will not win a GT this year. The first time since 2006 that happened. Chris Sorensen is not as strong as Contador but should be able to get a top 10 of he is in a great form.
Their best chance for a stage win is probably today. Larsson and Porte are two of the world best time trialers and also Boaro, Cooke, Klostergard and Vandborg are decent in time trials. They set a very good time.
22'00"
HTC - Highroad
51. K.Siutsou
52. M.Cavendish
53. M.Goss
54. P.Gretsch
55. L.Howard
56. M.Pinotti
57. H.Roulston
58. T.Van Garderen
59. P.Velits
HTC brings a very strong team to the Vuelta. Cavendish is the strongest sprinter in the world and has a very good lead out in Goss. This combination should certainly give them some stage wins. Velits finished 3rd last year and he isn't the only GC hope in this team. Sioutsou, Pinotti and Van Garderen are all candidates for a top 10 but can they do better if they work together for one leader?
HTC has won a good part of all TTT's in all three grand tours the last couple of years. They were again one of the top favourites today and rode a good time.
20'05"
Team Garmin - Cervelo
171. H.Haussler
172. J.Dean
173. M.Fischer
174. R.Hammond
175. A.Klier
176. M.Maaskant
177. T.Meyer
178. S.Vanmarcke
179. J.Vansummeren
This team would be very stron at the start of the Ronde van Vlaanderen of Paris - Roubaix but a GT is normally not a good fit for classical riders. They don't have any GC hope but most of this riders can be part of a good breakaway.
Garmin is seen as a good team for TTT's and this team has a lot of riders who can ride very fast. But no of them is a real TT'er and they disappoint massively.
22'41"
Leopard Trek
161. T.Rohregger
162. W.Clarke
163. S.Denifl
164. B.Feillu
165. G.Nizzolo
166. B.Pires
167. D.Viganò
168. R.Wagner
169. F.Wegmann
Leopard Trek ofcourse went full for victory in the Tour de France with the Schleck brothers. They don't have any of their strong riders here so we will probably see them a lot in the breaks. Wegmann is someone who can be succesfull in those long attacks.
No notable time trialers in their team so nothing is expected here. They just ride their time but it isn't great.
23'00"
Caja Rural
121. J.Herrada
122. Í.Cuesta
123. H.Fernández
124. F.Ferrari
125. A.Galdos
126. D.Milán
127. J.Moreno
128. J.Sobrino
129. J.Sanchez Pimienta
Caja Rural received a wild card to start the Vuelta. They deserved it as they bring a strong team. Herrada and Moreno can surprise in the mountains. Galdos can get a good result in a sprint after a tougher stage and maybe Cuesta can do as good as Noe did in the Giro?
They don't have any good TT'ers in their team but they give everything and ride to a great time for their standards.
20'36"
Omega Pharma - Lotto
71. J.Vanendert
72. J.Bakelants
73. D.Boucher
74. A.Greipel
75. A.Hansen
76. Ó.Pujol
77. V.Reynès
78. J.Van de Walle
79. F.Willems
Omega Pharma brings a good team, not their strongest as Gilbert and VdB aren't here but a good team. Greipel will ofcourse fight for the win in the flat stages and Vanendert can get a good overal result. Some good domestiques will help both Greipel as Vanendert.
Nothing great is expected from them in the team time trial but they go out and ride a respectable time.
20'45"
Vacansoleil - DCM Pro Cycling Team
31. E.Mosquera
32. M.Belkov
33. T.De Gendt
34. R.Feillu
35. J.Hoogerland
36. B.Leukemans
37. M.Pavarin
38. F.Veuchelen
39. L.Westra
5th, 4th, 5th and 2nd. That are the places where Mosquera finished the Vuelta the last 4 years. No doubt he will get a good result but can he fight for the overal win? He has a strong team to support him so he has a good chance.
The team can't afford to lose time here and with some good TT'ers like De Gendt and Westra, that is also not expected. They ride a decent time. Mosquera can be happy.
20'30"
Team Europcar
211. D.Veilleux
212. F.Bouyer
213. M.Claude
214. Y.Gène
215. S.Haddou
216. V.Jérôme
217. A.Pichot
218. P.Quemeneur
219. S.Turgot
The team management of Europcar clearly didn't expect riding the Vuelta when planning the season as they don't have any of their notable riders here. We will probably see one of them in the long break everyday.
They don't have any reason to go all out during the TTT. They are even better losing some time that they receive a lot of freedom during the first stages. Their time is also weak.
23'04"
Team Radishack
111. T.Machado
112. M.Busche
113. M.Irizar
114. M.Kwiatkowski
115. D.Muravyev
116. N.Oliveira
117. G.Rast
118. S.Rosseler
119. H.Zubeldia
The Shack doesn't bring any of their top GT-riders. Although he is getting old, Zubeldia might be able to return to his form of the old days and get a top 10. Other than that nothing special is expected from them.
They are known to be very strong as a team in TTT's and they show that today. Their time is certainly respectable.
20'25"
Lampre - ISD
151. M.Marzano
152. G.Bole
153. V.Buts
154. A.Kvachuk
155. D.Loosli
156. A.Malori
157. D.Pietropolli
158. A.Pérez Arrieta
159. A.Spezialetti
Scarponi already raced the Giro and the Tour and Cunego doesn't race a GT this year so no GC hopes for Lampre in the Vuelta. They will probably go for stage wins in a long escape. Guys like Bole and Pietropolli can certainly win sprint in a small breakaway group.
Malori is a good time trialer and some others can compete in TT's so they ride a respectable time.
20'41"
Rabobank Pro Cycling Team
101. C.Barredo
102. T.Bos
103. S.Clement
104. Ó.Freire
105. T.Leezer
106. B.Tankink
107. L.Ten Dam
108. M.Tjallingii
109. D.Van Winden
Freire always takes a stage win. Certainly when he hasn't had a great year so far. Bos makes his debut in a GT, intresting. No GC hope but guys like Barredo, Tankink and Ten Dam can get a good result in a stage over smaller mountains.
No GC-hope to ride a good time for but still a good TTT by Rabobank.
20'18"
Team Katusha
1. J.Rodríguez
2. P.Brutt
3. J.Horrach
4. L.Hoste
5. P.Ignatenko
6. D.Moreno
7. Y.Trofimov
8. N.Trussov
9. S.Vandenbergh
Katusha brings a very strong team to support Rodriguez in his quest to his first GT win. Moreno, Brutt and Trofimov will be important helpers on the mountain stages. Hoste and Vandenbergh can help the small Spaniard a lot on the flat and windy stages.
Rodriguez doesn't want to lose time on his opponents and his team goes all out on the TTT. They ride to an average time, not bad considering only Hoste is a good TTer in that team.
20'33"
Liquigas - Cannondale
201. M.Paterski
202. J.Guarnieri
203. P.Longo Borghini
204. A.Marangoni
205. D.Oss
206. S.Ponzi
207. F.Sabatini
208. J.Sagan
209. E.Viviani
Nibali won the Vuelta last year but he isn't here to defend his title. Giro winner Basso is also not here so no GC-hopes for Liquigas. We will probably see them a lot in the breaks but only Oss has the potential to be succesfull.
Normally a strong team in these team time trials, they don't have anyone to ride for this time so their time is rather weak.
20'52"
Euskaltel - Euskadi
11. I.Antón
12. P.Bilbao
13. J.Castroviejo
14. I.Isasi
15. I.Izagirre
16. M.Mínguez
17. R.Pérez
18. R.Sicard
19. A.Txurruka
Euskaltel is here with one of the top favourites. Anton certainly can win the overal if he doesn't crash out like the last couple of years. He has a strong team around him with Sicard and Txurruka. The team is probably also looking forward to the stages going through their Basque country.
Normally a bad team for time trials, they don't want to lose too much time here. Castroviejo is a very good TT'er and brings them to a strong time for their standards.
20'25"
AG2R - La Mondiale
61. J.Peraud
62. J.Bérard
63. C.Dessel
64. K.Goddaert
65. S.Houanard
66. R.Lemarchand
67. J.Loubet
68. S.Minard
69. M.Montaguti
They don't start with their strongest GT-riders (Roche and Gadret) but Peraud should still be able to fight for a top overal. No notable riders other then him so he should receive a lot of help from his teammates.
Always surprisingly good in TTT's, they again surprise today. Helped by French champion Peraud, they ride to a very good time.
20'22"
Quick-Step Cycling Team
91. K.De Weert
92. G.Ciolek
93. D.Devenyns
94. N.Maes
95. D.Malacarne
96. J.Pineau
97. A.Stauff
98. K.Van Impe
99. G.Van Keirsbulck
Quick-Step never was a good team for GT's but can De Weert can maybe bring them a top. Intresting to follow will be the results of Ciolek. Can the German bounce back after some disappointing years. Deveneyns, Pineau and Malacarne can all three round of a succesfull break.
Nothing special is expected from them during the TTT. They go out and ride their time.
20'41"
Sky ProCycling
131. E.Boasson Hagen
132. K.Arvesen
133. J.Augustyn
134. R.Downing
135. C.Froome
136. S.Gerrans
137. G.Henderson
138. J.Hunt
139. C.Sutton
No GC hopes for Sky unless Froome surprises the whole world. Still a strong team around Boasson Hagen to fight for some stage wins. Gerrans can also surprise on an easier mountain stage. Certainly an exciting team.
Seen as one of the favourites for the TTT with some good timetrialers as Hagen, Froome and Arvesen. They ride a very disappointing time.
20'38"
BMC Racing Team
141. M.Frank
142. M.Burghardt
143. Y.Eijssen
144. A.Kristoff
145. K.Kroon
146. J.Louder
147. S.Morabito
148. M.Santambrogio
149. S.Zahner
BMC already won the Tour and finished 2nd in the Giro with Evans so they can afford to bring a weaker team to the Vuelta. They can maybe get a victory with a succesfull break from Burghardt, Kroon or Santambrogio. Also intresting to see will be what Kristoff can do in the mass sprints.
They don't have any reason to go all out in the TTT so they ride one of the weaker times of all teams.
20'51"
Andalucia Cajasur - Caja Granada
191. D.Bernabéu
192. J.A.Benítez
193. S.Carrasco
194. P.Lechuga
195. J.J.Lobato
196. A.Palomares
197. A.Piedra
198. J.Ramírez Abeja
199. J.Rosendo
This wild card team has probably the weakest team of the whole Vuelta. They are already very happy they can start here and we will probably see them in almost all the long breaks.
All they can try to do is not finish last in the TTT and they succeed.
20'54"

We had expected to lose less time and to finish on a better position so not a good day for us. The Vuelta is still long.

A good showing in the TTT but you should shine in the mountains judging by your squad |

Thanks FuglsanxTH3 and sutty68!
These riders are Menchov mains opponents.
Joaquim Rodriguez
He certainly has the talent to take back time on must mountain stages but isn't he too tired after already riding the Tour and the Giro. And will he be able to keep the loss in the TT as small as possible?
Igor Anton
The top favourite hasn't raced that much since the Giro so he shouldn't be to tired. He already lost agains Menchov in the Giro but can he fight back in his home country?
Ezequiel Mosquera
One of the best climbers in the Vuelta these last couple of years for his small Xacobeo team. He now races for the bigger Vacansoleil team and has already raced the Tour. Is he fresh enough to fight for the win?

Menchov will have to face difficulties against especially Anton and Rodríguez (although he will be pretty tired in the last week) in the hilly stages (to Valdepenas de Jaen, San Lorenzo El Escorial, Basque stages, Pena Cabarga and those with a hill a few km before the finish). So you must try to gain time in the mountain-top-finish stages (Sierra Nevada, Manzaneda, Covatilla, Somiedo, Angliru) and blast them away in the ITT in Salamanca!!
Good luck!

Geox squad:

The Trofeo Melinda is the next Italian autumn classic we will participate in. Felline and Florencio proved that they are very strong and with no Cunego here, we think they can fight for the win.
A breakaway group got formed early. Their gap stayed around 2' for a while and a lot of riders tried to jump to the front. None of them was a good puncher so the break got bigger and bigger.
But then some better riders attacked. Caruso and Atapuma joined the break and the pack ofcourse didn't want to let them go so they brought everyone back.
Atapuma tried again and could get away alone. He could create a gap and one rider started chasing him. Bisolti is 2' behind the Colombian.
The chase in the pack was organised by Astana and they steadily reduced the pack to a small group. Bad news for us is that Felline is having a bad day. He is still in the main group but he is already feeling very tired.
Entering the last full ascent of the main climb, 3 riders attack from the peloton. Mahoric, Vila and Pozzovivo aren't succesfull but their attacks reduced the pack even further. Felline was one of the riders who had to let the others go.
Atapuma was still leading alone. With 25 km to go, he had a gap of 1'30" on Bisolti and the Italian was riding the 1'30" in front of the favourites group.
Cheula now started pulling really hard in the group for Florencio. He didn't get any help although Type 1 still has 3 riders in this group (Callegarin and the Efemkin brothers).
The chasing worked and the group got closer to Atapuma. Bisolti was caught on the penultimate hill with 8 km to go. The group was still more as 1' behind the Colombian though.
The first attacks from the favourites came on the flat run-inn to the final climb. Efemkin was the first to go followed by Bertagnolli and Villa. Cheula was too tired to chase so Florencio started chasing himself.
Entering the final very steep km (over 10 %), Atapuma still had a small gap to the chasers but they were closing in on him very fast. It would be a very exciting finish. Can the Colombian keep up or will he get passed in the last km after a solo of more as 100 km?
Efemkin still had a lot of strength and could easily pass Atapuma to take the win. Atapuma was totally dead but he could keep up to take the 2nd place in front of Bertagnolli and Vorganov. Florencio came in as 7th.

Thanks for the nice comments
Vuelta a Espana: Stage 2
La Nucia - Playas de Orihuela 172.5 km

The first real stage of the Vuelta is a flat one. The stage will surely end in a mass sprint. Only other intresting point on the route is the mountain-sprint not far after the start.
Geox squad:

De La Fuente joined an early breakaway-attempt and outsprinted them for the first KoM-points. He will wear the mountain-jersey tomorrow. He drops back to the peloton after the sprint.
A rather big break got established a bit later. Wegmann, Garcia Acosta, Kroon, Downing and Spezialetti are just some of the riders at the front.
They will probably have no chance to stay away as 3 teams are controlling the pack and later organising a chase. Omega Pharma (Greipel), HTC (Cavendish) and Saxo Bank (leader Boaro) don't want to see a succesfull break today.
Entering the last 10 km, it's clear that the break won't be succesfull. Some riders make a desperate attempt but they can't cope with the closing peloton.
5 km to go and the leadout-trains are getting formed. Bakelandts and Reynes are leading out Greipel. They are in a very good position. Cavendish is in the wheel of Goss but they are a bit further.
Goss did a great job to bring Cavendish to the front and the Manx Missile is in a perfect position when he leaves his teammate wheel with 1.7 km to go.
Reynes couldn't cope with the speed of the HTC-riders and Greipel is a bit behind.
Nobody could even try to pass Cavendish. Boasson Hagen died out in his wheel. Only Freire still had a good jump but he had to come from to far and finish in 3th. The whole pelotn arrives together so no time lost for any GC-contenders.

Normal start to the Vuelta. Great job by De La Fuente to take the mountain-jersey. Other than that, nothing notable happened. An easy start!

Vuelta a Espana: Stage 3
Petrer - Totana 164.1 km

The 2nd stage is again categorised as flat but there are some hills on the road. The last one is only 10km from the finish so it has to be seen if the sprinters can survive. This might also already be a good day for a succesfull breakaway. We will not interfere in any debates as the Sierra Nevada is coming up tomorrow.
Geox squad:

A break got finally established after a rather long fight. The names of the 13 riders: Turgot, Veilleux (Europcar), Hunt (Sky), Vigano (Leopard), Lemarchand (AG2R), Lobato (Andalucia), Van Winden (Rabobank), Van Impe (Quick-Step), Oss (Liquigas), Rast (Radioshack), Cooke (Saxo Bank), Bole (Lampre) and Trussov (Katusha).
Omega Pharma and HTC have faith that Cavendish and Greipel can survive the hills as they start to chase the escapees. They don't receive any help as most other sprinters teams have a guy in the break.
They worked hard and on the final hill with 20 km to go, the gap has decreased to 1'30". Maaskant then attacks out of the pack but his jump won't succeed. It looked like he was going to join the escapees but he faded and was quick back in the pack.
Hunt is the first of the escapees to pass the KoM-sprint. The chase in the pack has weakened as the bunch is still 1' behind. It will be a very close decision here between the escapees and the pack.
The break almost lost no time on the descent so they are still 45" in front with less then 5 km to go. The escapees will fight for the win.
Oss starts his sprint very early. He hopes to surprise the real sprinters but Cooke, Vigano, Turgot, Trussov and Hunt are all in his wheel. Wrong tactic by the Italian.
800 metres to go and 7 riders are now sprinting over the full road. Vigano is currently leading but Turgot and Lobato are closing in on him. Hunt, Trussov and Cooka are also not far off.
But it is Juan Jose Lobato who takes the biggest win of his career. Great win for him. The smallest team in the Vuelta is one of the first to take a stage win. Vigano finishes 2nd and Turgot 3rd. The pack crosses the line 43" later.
The sprint in the bunch was very dangerous and a mass crash occured. Luckily, Menchov and Duarte were sitting near the front and the crash happened more to the back. De La Fuente, Sastre and Valls had less luck and all crashed but were able to finish the day without any major injuries. Zahner was the only rider who had to abandon.

Another normal day. No one danger was in the break so we had no problems with them staying away. Too bad 3 of our riders crashed but they have no injuries and they were no leader so not that bad.

Vuelta a Espana: Stage 4
Baza - Sierra Nevada 172.00 km

The first tough stage of the Vuelta and immediately a mountian top finish. And not an easy one, finish on the Sierra Nevada, more as 2000 m altitude. The final climb is more as 20 km long so the first differences will be made here. They are not expected to be big tough as the first mountainstage is always a bit wait-and-see.
Geox squad:

De La Fuente joined the break of the day but really suffered on the first climb. He normally was a good climber in the group so he probably suffers from yesterday's crash. Morabito won the first mountain sprint. De La Fuente was only able to take 6 points and he decides to wait for the pack.
That means we have a break of the day of 8 riders. Meyer (Garmin), Longo Borghini (Liquigas), Morabito (BMC), Arvesen, Augustyn (Sky), Vaitkus (Astana's Lithuanian champion), Pujol (Omega Pharma) and Jerome (Europcar). They start the final climb with 3' advantage.
Fabio Duarte attacks immediately at the start of the Sierra Nevada. There are still more as 20 km to go but he feels strong and was already succesfull with the same type of attack in the Volta a Portugal.
He can quickly create a 1' gap to the bunch and it doesn't take long untill he reaches the initial break. Morabito is the onlyone who tries to follow but he doesn't have the legs to follow Duarte.
Euskaltel started a chase with first Sicard and later Txurruka. The later splitted the bunch and a chasing group of 5 is formed. Anton, Velits, Menchov and Blanco are 1' behind the Colombian.
10 km to go and the third group is already 1' behind the Menchov group. That's the sign for Mosquera to attack. He starts chasing alone. Behind him is another chasing group with Sioutsou, Herrada and Kiryienka.
Duarte is still going very good and Txurruka is not able to cut in his lead. Anton will have to go himself if he wants to close the gap to the Colombian. Blanco is then already long dropped.
Inspired by the devil himself, Anton takes the front and drops his teammate. Menchov takes a drink as he knows that the real battle between the two GC-favourites starts now.
Anton made an attack from the chasing group and starts chasing Duarte. He is still 30" behind the Colombian and the finish is less then 5 km far. Menchov didn't have the power to respond to the Basque's attack but continues at his own pace.
We are in the penultimate kilometre and Anton has almost closed the gap to Duarte. Duarte takes his energy gel and prepares himself to sprint against the Spaniard. Menchov has dropped Velits and is 30" behind.
Duarte still had energy left and could sprint away from Anton in the final k. Great stage win for the Colombian. Anton comes in 8" later and Menchov 45" later as the Basque. Cobo completes the good stage by our team with a 10th place, already 4' behind.
Results:
Great stage win for Duarte! He attacked with more as 20 km to go and rode alone for the rest of the climb. He has become a world-class climber.

U25:
Duarte also takes over the U25 jersey. He is out of class in this category as the 2nd is already more as 5' behind.

Teams:
We take the lead in the teams ranking after great climbing by the whole team.
| 1 | | Geox - TMC | 38h16'04 (1) | | 2 | | HTC - Highroad | + 4'31 (2) | | 3 | | Euskaltel - Euskadi | + 4'41 (3) |
Great stage for us. Duarte's attack was in one word Awesome! Menchov did also great losing only 45" to Anton. Cobo jumped out of his group in the final kilometre to take 10th. Great teamwork. Only bad news is that both De La Fuente and Sastre have shown weakness due to their crashes yesterday.

DUARTE!! Great tactics by Geox here! I don't know his stats right now, but do you think, he will even have a chance to go for GC? Menchov did well, too, so I guess you're still going for the Russian, right? Anyway, nice stage
