Stage 6
The queen's stage of this edition of Tirreno Adriatico is only 89 kilometres short. After the start in San Benedetto del Tronto, the first 35 kilometres are flat. Then the first ascend of the Colle San Giacomo begins; 16 kilometres with an average gradient of 6% and maximum gradients of up to 15%! The summit awaits at an altitude of 1110 metres above sea level. After the descend, the party starts all over again.
36km to go
Th emighty Danny Pate (Sony Ericsson) is the first rider of the BOTD that crosses the line of the KOTM-sprint at the summit of the Colle San Giacomo. Pate is joined by Juan José Oroz (Euskaltel), Sébastien Minard (Garmin), Giairo Ermeti (Farnese Vini), George Hincapie (Saxo Bank) and Edvald Boasson Hagen (Dexia). The peloton has taken it easy and follows at 7'32.
11km to go
As soon as the riders start the 2nd ascend of the Colle San Giacomo, Thomas Dekker takes control of the pace of the peloton. Adter 5 kilometres of climbing, only 18 riders are present in the group of favourites, including Pozzato (GC 1), RodrÃguez (GC2), Contador (GC 3), Barredo (GC 7), Gesink (GC 8), Gautier (GC 10) and Hermans (GC 12). But the stage win seems to be gone, as they're still 6'12 behind the leaders.
9km to go
Dekker increases the pace even more, and this is too much for Filippo Pozzato. He gets dropped, and knows that he won't win the Tirreno 2014. The chasing group is thinning out a lot, but Dekker is about to step aside, as his work is almost done.
Looking at the lead of the race: Danny Pate has dropped the others and is leading the race. Hincapie follows at '13 and Oroz, Ermeti, Minard and Hagen at '28. The group of favourites follows at 5'01.
5km to go
With 5km to go, Pate is still in the lead, but Oroz, Minard and Hincapie stay close at '11. When the camera switches back to the group of favourites, we have missed an attack of Robert Gesink. The Dutch stage racer has attacked with 6km to go, and is closing the gap to the leaders rapidly: 2'59! RodrÃguez and the Movistar-trio Barredo, Salgueiro and Contador are already '48 behind Gesink.
3km to go
Contador didn't react immediately, as he wanted RodrÃguez to close the gap, being the GC number 2. But Purito isn't capable of doing it, so Pistolero leaves him behind and closes the gap to Robert Gesink. With 3km to go, the 2 are riding 2 minutes behind Oroz, Minard and Pate.
Finish
The 3 leaders manage to stay out of reach of the fast climbing duo behind them. And Juan José Oroz sprints to the stage win, his first win in over 4 years! Minard takes the 2nd place at '23 and Danny Pate, wasting too much energy with his early attack, 3rd at '33.
Knowing that he has to gain '33 in the GC to Contador, Gesink attacks once more in the last 2 kilometres. But Contador is too strong and can't be dropped. Gesink wins the still prestiguous sprint for the 4th place at 1'05. RodrÃguez has too finish before the clock hits 1'54 to win the Tirreno. But when he crosses the line 2'32 behind Oroz, he not only looses the virtual GC-lead to Contador, but also the 2nd place to Gesink. And Pozzato? He totally cracked and looses 7 minutes in 9 kilometres, dropping to the 10th place in the GC.

Word from the DS
Although we feel a little bad about missing the stage win, we are very happy with the progress Robert Gesink made today. A 2nd place in the GC will be great (and after the Tirreno, Gesink will have a long break untill the Tour de Suisse, making sure not to have too many race days before the Tour and the Vuelta).

Three things:
1. The mighty Danny Pate, love it
2. What a beautiful scenery for an exciting finale!
3. Strong racing, missing out on the stage win but moving up in the GC immensely! Robert is getting along very well. |

Stage 7
The last stage of the Tirreno - Adriatico is a stage with start and finish in San Benedetto del Tronto and 124 kilometres long. It features a few hills in the first kilometres, and some meaningless hills in the last 25 kilometres, before the finish near the Adriatic coast.
16km to go
Meaningless hills my ass.......
Maxime Vantomme (Katusha) is leading the race and is cycling towards the win. Behind him is a group of 3, with Sulzberger, Balloni and Van Vooren. But then JoaquÃm RodrÃguez attacks and gets countered by Alberto Contador. And Robert Gesink? He's sleeping, just as our entire team (yep, and me....). When we realize that they have attacked, the 2 Spaniards already have a gap of 50 seconds!
4km to go
Contador and RodrÃguez close the gap to Balloni, Sulzberger and Van Vooren. Behind them, Coen Vermeltfoort and Thomas Dekker are absolutely riding as if the devil is on their tails / back wheels, and close the gap to them, with just 4km to go.
3km to go
Being pretty pissed about missing the attack and still full of adrenaline, Robert Gesink attacks himself with 3km to go. He knows that gaining time will be impossible, but he just needs to loose some negative energy.
Finish
Meanwhile, Maxime Vantomme wins the stage after a 70 kilometre solo ride. Great effort by the Belgian rider.
Gesink's attack gets countered by Fabian Cancellara. The Swiss wins the sprint for the 2nd place, with Gesink in 3rd, and in the same time, John Degenkolb winning the peloton sprint for the 4th place.

That wasn't very smart from us, riding that unattentful. But luckily we could restore it, and even score our only stage top 3-finish. Great effort by Gesink, getting the 2nd place in the GC!

Great stages from Gesink! Shame you couldn't break Contador, seems he was the best rider when he had to be...
Spoiler But... In my game Conta completely got broke when he got dropped and finished 15 mins behind the group of favourites when he was leading the Giro!

** Kenny Dehaes (Sky), Kevyn Ista (Landbouwkrediet), Klaas Lodewyck (De Koninck).
* Steve Chainel (FDJ), Maxim Inglinskiy (CCC), Niki Terpstra.
Our goal
The win!
The race
8km to go
It's terrible weather in Belgium, as the rain is pouring down all day. 8 kilometres before the finish, the peloton has thinned out a lot to 29 riders, as we have made the race very hard. First Sep Vanmarcke was in the attack, then when he got caught, Sébastien Rosseler was the next one.
SO with less than 10km to go, we have set up our sprint train. Some riders (eg. Barry Markus, Preben Van Hecke, Maxim Iglinskiy and Nicloas Maes) try to attack, but a bunch sprint is unevitable.
Finish
And to finish it off in the sprint, we have the outstanding duo of Coen Vermeltfoort (last year's winner) as the last lead out man, and our Dane Matti Breschel. It's an easy win for Breschel, already the 5th of the season. Kevyn Ista (Landbouwkrediet) takes the 2nd place, beating Vermeltfoort and Niki Terpstra.

@Tirreno - good final effort from Gesink, and an overall nice result for the Dutchman.
@Nokere-Koerse - Great domination from the team, hopefuly Matti Breschel will keep that level for the cobbled classics! |
