I just ordered a new bike in a local store, because my Corratec Corones is not capable of driving outside anymore, since I was ran over at a traffic light. I'm really hyped right now. I never spent that much on a bike before and I really hope that it will be worth it.

How are you guys preparing for the warmer days? Or do you start riding, when it's warm?

Been riding for 2 weeks now, 250 kms the last 3 days and 100 today as well. In other words, yes, I've started riding.

Been seeing you a bit on Strava Riis, looks like you work good!

I have reached 3400 km so far this year, will make my race debut today. Pity my Garmin has been killed by the massive rain the last days, so it can't be uploaded.

New bikes are always a joy, enjoy.

Finally feel like full fitness is returning after nearly 3 weeks off the bike over Christmas. Bike feels all shiny with a new Garmin, drive train, pedals and bar tape and the sun has been shining too - all good!

@Riis: You looked like you were doing great last year. I might follow you on strava as a motivation for myself.

@nils erik: 3400km already? That's 46km every day since the year started!

That's impressive! Hope your start goes well.

@Ian: Thanks. It's already at the bike store, but I didn't go there yet. I need to wait for one last bank transaction, to make myself poor again. Grin
Sun? Weren't you from GB? I thought that Sun was only a myth there. Pfft
Nevertheless, have some nice start into the season.

Which version did you get, the 105 or Ultegra? Looks like a good frameset and being a new bike will naturally make you go faster Wink Being an alloy frame I'd suggest running 25 mm tyres to take some of the harshness from the ride quality that alloy frames can sometimes have. You'll have to post some pics of it.

My ridng has still been poor, just can't get my health right as I'm still battling Ross River Fever which really has knocked my about, also a left knee injury from mid last year that just won't go away, getting really frustrated that I keep getting sick. Only managed 3350 ks so far this year and a lousy 25,000 vertical, the bulk of that being work commutes. We are fast heading into our winter which for some reason I seem to flourish in so here's hoping the Ross River is gone by then. Looking forward to smashing out the Giro Challenge on Strava again Smile

Get well soon Strydz. I know it's all relative but 3350kms still seems like plenty to me!

Having felt relatively unfit for a good couple of months, after 3 weeks of indulgence and no riding over Christmas, I suddenly felt like I turned the corner as spring arrived in mid March. I started to make some more intensive efforts and posted some PR's on some of the local 2 minute to 8 minute climbs. Feel fitter than ever at the moment and put part of this down to some Zwift riding too.

Don't get me wrong you can't beat an outdoor ride but Zwift is by far the most compelling I've found indoor riding with the mass participation element. The races in particular have proved to be great fun and very intense workouts.

Unfortunately it's estimated "Z Power" also got me hooked on the concept of riding with power to the point where I took the plunge and picked up a left sided power meter. Was just getting into it and seeing the benefits out on the road when it failed...so I'm now waiting on a replacement arriving.

Certainly I can now understand why pro's rarely get anywhere near their max heart rate in races posted on Strava -power is a much more reliable measure of sustainable effort and the heart becomes so efficient as fitness increases that it's not the limiting factor for those very well trained athletes.

Thanks to a link on the Zwift Blog I found this power profile comparison interesting (see table of figures towards the bottom):

https://www.train...profiling/

Pretty much confirms what I might've guessed - my sprint is poor, 1 minute power not much better, 5 minute power much better in comparison and my FTP good but not as good comparatively speaking as my 5 minute power.

Basically I lack any semblance of exciting explosiveness but if anyone knows of any 5 minute races with big prize funds that are limited to middle aged, not too talented participants then please let me know...

First ride of the season (and actually also first since many years) for me last weekend!

https://www.strava.com/activities/952.../952630478

Despite mild headwind in the first part, and a wrong turn that lead me to an uphill section I would have been glad to avoid, i managed to crush the 25km/h average speed wall! Banana

In the end the chinese road bike I bought (brand new) for 80€ isn't that bad Grin

I think I need to tweak the bike settings a bit, I felt a bit of pain in my knee when pushing hard on pedals. Do you guys have a good guide on how to set up the bike?

Starter for ten here https://www.youtu...VYhyppWTDc

Also perhaps consider keeping it short, say under an hour, for the first couple of rides if you haven't ridden in so long, just to give the body a chance to get slowly back up to speed.

you are such amazing bikers. So much km' s already?
I have 1500 ich km. Weather has been total shit. Around 0 degree trainings have been frustrating. Always feeling great after ride..but it needs a character to get on the bike.
Now road season/ preparation is almost over. Back to the woods. MTB season is about to start. I will spend my summer there to take part MTB marathons 2,5h true 8h races. Not much for result Smile , because I am not getting any, but because it is fun and great alternative for my social network (because I closed my facebook 5 years ago).

ianrussell
Sounds good Guido, though I'll happilly leave the 8 hour MTB marathons to you! Smile

Now you can't beat an outdoor ride but have to say Zwift has been surprisingly good for getting me riding when otherwise I might not bother - e.g. when I can't fit in a ride but can get on late night or when I can't face freezing cold rain or some such but fancy a spin of the legs. Sometimes I'm up for facing everything the elemants can throw at me but if not there's been Zwift.

Season opening mtb race..
with snowstorm. I never had that cold after finish line. I needed outside help to remove my gloves and jacket.
But now after 5 hours.
It was amazing..classic that I would never forget

Sounds like an epic one. Whatever doesn't kill you makes you stronger!

Tried to ride an alternate route to a friend living a 40 km ride from me. Instead of leaving the Schelde and riding on a busy street, I wanted to try smaller roads. A sign showed that the road ended, so I looked for a way through the fields. Eventually, I came upon this beautiful location.

After another 100m it was impossible to go any further and had to go back and use the busy street anyway but definitely a location I've saved on my GPS to go back and walk!

Today I witnessed what reckoned to be the biggest mass crash ever in a cycling race on Norwegian ground. Officially 40 riders went down (like in went down, not got hindered), but from my view at the back of the peloton it looked like more. One of the nastiest things I've seen, and the minutes of still-standing in the neutralication afterwards is one of the worst moments I've had the last years. Just standing there, without knowing anything, except remembering the horrible sights and the screams of people. I've honestly considered to stop racing from this day. That is probably not going to happen, but the memories I'll keep for a long time.

https://youtu.be/...
GoPro video from the crash, I'll recommend to turn the sound on, for maximal empathy.

Had a fall yesterday on a wet descent with a stupidly positioned corner at the bottom (blind, steep and with a traffic island) group broke hard and my back wheel decided it wanted to try out being a front wheel.

Turns out now that my scaphoid is broken and I'm back to running and the trainer now that the riding weather finally got good. Sad On the bright side at least it could've been a lot worse after crashing at 50kph, no surgery needed despite breaking a bone my wrist and no other serious injuries aside from road rash.
