As for indoor training I mainly use my rollers + Zwift but I used to listen to music or a cyclocross race passes an hour nicely.
As for a first race bike depends how much you want to spend. I would go second hand personally you usually get more bang for your buck if you're patient and hunt around! Good luck!

Over New Year's I was selected to go to the Philippines for the World University Cycling Championships, mid March this year. This is a big step for me, and I want to have a good showing, so does anyone have any advice for this level of competition?
Actually, does anyone have advice on flying (this will literally be my first time on a plane  )?

I'm fine with all of the above with the notable exception of heavy prolonged rain if I'm riding for over 3 hours. Mainly because if it's anything under 15C (most of the time here) I end up feeling the cold once soaked through. That I can always do without! |

Pleased with my 2015. Not sure I'm up for topping it in 2016 but plan to focus on enjoying my riding more than ever, hopefully getting some more south east England climbs under my belt along the way and being thereabouts with the annual numbers in the process.
Highlights of the year include the Tourmalet and my first proper mountain ever, the Col de Mente (fog, rumbling thunder and cow bells made the climb so atmospheric). Tbh just riding proper mountains was awe inspiring.
Other than that I moved into the top 3 on the 100 Greatest Climbs leaderboard for the south east of England (14 climbs) and even topped the new south east specific book leaderboard (60 climbs) by the years end. NOTE this is mainly by virtue of having bothered to ride more climbs than people far more talented than me but I'll take everything I can get

Hey all
I have some exciting additions which I'll be making to Daily in the coming week. First though, I'd like to say that I'm racing national champs tomorrow as an u23. We are racing alongside the elites. Some of you may or may not know, but I'm riding for a new domestic team, Team Telkom. We have a serious challenger for the u23 title in Morne van Niekerk who was last year's u23 TT champ, but had bad luck with punctures in this year's TT. As for me, I'll be trying to get in the early move to be able to assist Morne in the latter part of the race.
The race will be livestreamed here, so look out for us in our light-blue kit! And stay tuned for more cool news.

Season opening next saturday in Belgium secure! 150 kms with 5 belgian conti-teams, and Lotto and Etixx's u23. I feel much better than last year, but this will probably be too much of a step up... Anyway, fun to race abroad for the first time! |

I'm in a good place...
clean bike
spotless drivetrain
post winter crud, regreased headset and seat post
tweaked to perfection derailleur
Spring is in the air, weight down to "normal", it's time to hit the climbs in earnest!
Love this time of year when the shorts come out and the sun (sometimes) shines (not today obviously, hence why the bike got the full once over)

Hm very happy to have the old bike of my dad now. We fixed some problems with it and its now a sorta race-city hybrid but makes for fun riding.the important thing is I feel ok locking it outside, something I was never comfortable with my normal bike bc of value obviously. I will use it mostly for commuting bc most of my training goes into running but I hope to catch some weekend rides now that the temps are rising.

My latest build using a Chinese FM015 frame set with a Ultegra/105 mix, 3T cockpit, Cannondale C2 carbon post and American Classic 420 wheels coming in at 6.4 kg's

Chinese frames are often looked at with skepticism, but in most cases they will work just good, from what I have seen. It definitely looks nice!
Belgium went a bit better than I thought; I was far from getting any results; but I got a sign that my shape is rising, after almost a year with alternate training only.
The Interclub Race saturday was extremely fast. Crushed 44 average the first hour, and in a flat tailwind section almost crossed 70 km/h. Crashes were everywhere; and a crash just in the start of a long crosswind section (the hardest part of the race, according to a team mate that got to the finish line) made me blow off; but I still almost got to ride the whole race.
The kermesse sunday was easier, and even though I had an extremely bad day and was waiting to fall behind from lap 7 I ended up riding 11 out of 14 laps, and would have finished if it wasn't for the sweeping car (?) riding just behind the peloton.
This weekend is the Norwegian Cup opening at sunday as well as a time trial event this evening. Not many from the biggest teams are at the start line, so it is possible to dream of a result. The watt monster Truls Korsaeth is the biggest name on the start line, but he has been sick the last month; so it will be two tight races. |

Liege-Bastogne-Liege was not the only snowy race yesterday. This is a picture of me (to the right) from yesterday's norwegian cup event in Grenland:
The race in itself went great, and still with less than two weeks of training after the navy, I grabbed my first top 50 in the cup ever. Two weeks to the uci 1.2 events Sundvolden and Ringerike GP, so watch out for a flying Nils Erik! |

I also had a snowy race, unfortunately no photos to share though.  First time I've ever raced in snow though, a 60km race had to be shortened to 30km (didn't find that out until the final kilometres due to not speaking Swedish though ) and the major descent neutralized, meaning the race was decided on the final 2km climb, average 9% max 12%.
Was an interesting experience for somebody who's rarely even seen that much snow before let alone raced in it, got a nice 6th place to show for it too.

Yes quite some crazy, changing weather lately in whole Europe. You start the ride in sunshine, go through snowflakes, sunshine and end the ride with a tsunami on your back, utterly wet.
Nice adventures Nils, seems like you are doing great progress. Good luck for the upcoming races!

Not in any races (not that I'm great) over winter, on the contrary I've been finding no time for the bike unfortunately. Today I managed to get down to the Avantidrome in Cambridge for my first taste of track cycling, I wasn't the most confident handler at the start but got into it pretty quickly, sprinting not my forte but something I really enjoyed and would love to experience again!

I lost my mind and tried on the climb to Juvasshytta this week, by many regarded as the hardest climb in Norway. And it is. Incredibly hard, incredibly steep; definitely the most brutal climb I've ever ridden, crushing Ventoux with miles. 13.1 kms with 9,9 % including two sections of about 500 meters of flat/downhill; and with long sections steady on upper 15%. Made it in just below an hour, and were completely empty. Nice to have it done, but never never ever will I do it again.
I have ridden some races over the last weeks, with ups and downs. Had a bad day ln Hadeland GP, but was not far from finishing. Got caught up behind a huge crash after 20 kms in Ringerike. Had to wait about a minute to get through. Rode well after that though, but the peloton was long gone, unfortunately.
The last nc test this weekend. Flat national cup race, no wind predicted. Looks just like this years Norwegian Championship course, which will be won by Kristoff. |
