@sutty: Not the best news, but Trentino was his last major race before a short break. He will just have to work on his fitness for more than originally planned.
Maybe the extended break will do him the World of good |

Giro del Trentino
Pergine Valsugana-Condino -- 176.1km
Two stages left in Trentino and with a change of leader, it will be a test of recovery and resilience.
Davide will taken over the leadership of the team, with Linus and Adam continuing to act as super domestiques to him. We just hope that he has enough left in the tank after a long day in the saddle yesterday to keep up his Top 15 GC placing.
Favourites | Outsiders | Don't Under Estimate | C. Froome | M. Scarponi | L. Westra | G. Meersman | M. Moser | M. Frank | J. Vanendert | E. Battaglin | F. Kessiakoff |
A group of 3 riders attacked at the beginning of the stage, as Pietropolli (LAM), Valls (VCD) and Pantano (COL) went off the front as soon as the flag dropped.
With a jersey to defend, Team Sky instantly set up the pace making, as the break slowly increased its lead.
Time Gap -- 25km
Peleton > 4'36 > Leaders
Further attacks went off the front of the peleton, as Brandle (IAM) and Battaglin (BAR) faced the impossible to bridge the gap. After a long, hard ride, they finally reached the break just before the first KoM sprint.
Mountain Sprint (Cat. 2) -- 49.7km
1. D. Pietropolli // 2. J. Pantano // 3. M. Brandle
Sky continued the pace making of the peleton, with not a single team offering to come and help them.
Time Gap -- 70km
Peleton > 10'26 > Leaders
Intermediate Sprint -- 79.2km
1. R. Valls // 2. M. Brandle // 3. D. Pietropolli
As the winds got stronger, the rain began to be fall on the stage. It was not going to be a good day in the saddle for the riders.
It would only be a matter of time before the weather began to affect the race. First Pietropolli hits the deck and has a long chase back to the break...
... and then Fedi falls on a tight bend. Luckily no one else in the peleton is brought down with him.
Villella rode the stage in a very sensible way. He never left Froome's side all day, and was constantly looked over by Linus.
Time Gap -- 125km
Peleton > 5'42 > Leaders
As the peleton reached the final climb of the day, a group of 5 favourites, including Froome and Kangert (AST), attacked into the mist.
As the peleton descended onto the flat towards the finish, the break was still over 3 minutes in front. However, Froome had other thoughts in mind, as he attacked off the front again.
The break was almost forgotten about, as Battaglin sprints to the win, ahead of the rest. The main GC favourites, including Villella come home together, 2'37 down on the winner, but with no changes to the main end of the standings.

Well I expected the stage to go a little something like that. The attacks on the final climb were unexpected, but to be honest, that just neutralised any plan we had of Villella trying to gain some time back. The pace was then far too high, and any attack would be a waste of energy.
Tomorrow is the big stage, and we have our fingers crossed for a good day for Davide. We will aim to push for a Top 10 finish on GC, but will be happy with what we have at the minute.

Giro del Trentino
Arco-Sega di Ala -- 166.8km
The final stage, and one last push for Davide. Best case scenario is that he has a great day, can climb with the best and hopes that those within 30seconds of him just have an off day. Worst case... Davide has a full on disaster of a stage, and finishes over 5minutes behind his nearest rival.
Favourites | Outsiders | Don't Under Estimate | C. Froome (SKY) | J. Vanendert (LTB) | R. Kiserlovski (RLT) | F. Aru (AST) | P. Niemiec (LAM) | J. Brajkovic (AST) | P. Rolland (EUC) | B. Wiggins (SKY) | S. Pirazzi (BAR) |
Final stage begins with a number of attacks, with Euser (UHC), Howson, Locatelli (BAR), Gallopin (RLT), Barta (TNE) and Pinotti (BMC) making up the breakaway.
Sky yet again took control of the pace making, as nicer weather looked in store for the riders on the final day.
Time Gap -- 40km
Peleton > 4'28 > Leaders
It may have been nicer weather, but it was going to be a long stage for some. The peleton split on the short sharp climb to Mori, and that would be last time they would see the front of the race.
Kilometre after kilometre, Team Sky set the pace at the front of the peleton, as the time to the break reached its peak.
Time Gap -- 84km
Gruppetto > 2'22 > Peleton > 5'30 > Leaders
The first riders to try and test the control of Sky attacked on the Cat.2 climb to Brentonico. Sella (AND) made the first move, taking Fedi (FLA), T. Lofkvist (IAM) and Valls (VCD) with him.
Mountain Classification (Cat.2) -- 121.8km
1. L. Euser // 2. T. Gallopin // 3. S. Locatelli
Only two riders remained from the break after the climb to the top of Brentonico, as Gallopin and Euser pressed on to the finish.
All was on a level playing field as the peleton hit the climb to the finish. All remnants of the break had been pulled back, and Sky slowly began to split the peleton down the the stage favourites.
Here we go again! Froome puts in an acceleration and leaves everyone in his wake. It was clear that he was going to win the stage and the race, but the question was by how much? There was still 4km of climbing, and every pedal stroke added more time to the gap to the others.
Davide finally cracked with just over 1km to go to the finish. It was a brave effort, but now it was just about making sure he did not lose too much time to those around him.
Victory comfortably went to Froome, who won the stage by nearly 2'30, with Kangert finishing second and then Scarponi, a further 34" behind him. Villella finished the stage 28th, 8'09 down on Froome, but holds onto 12th on GC.

Well the race is over, and what a race! I have nothing but pride for Davide, who has well and truly earned his break before his next race at the start of June.
On the team bus at the start of the stage, he said that he was not feeling too good in his legs, and was hoping just to hold on. Well, if holding on until 1km to go is bad legs, then I will take that any time he said he is not on top form.
The rest of the team, including Adam and Linus worked hard, whilst the course never really suited the likes of Ewan, Howson, Monier or Lavery.
I was hoping just to head back to the the team's new HQ in Milan, but it would seem I have been requested by Rapha bosses... I wonder what they want?

@sutty: it did indeed, but to be honest, it was similar for a lot of riders fighting for the 10th place on GC. Villella gained time on those immediately above him, but lost time to those below... in the end, he stays 12th

*** BREAKING NEWS ***
Rapha withdraw squad from Tour Series
Rapha bosses today announced that they have officially withdrawn Rapha-Bianchi from the up-and-coming Pearl Izumi Tour Series, due to start next month.
The new Anglo-Italian team was due to bring a quality team to the races, with the British fans excited to see the next big team on the cycling scene and their group of talented riders scheduled to take part.
Rapha have stayed tight-lipped on their actions, claiming that it was due to administration reasons to why the team has withdrawn. Team Manager Phil Hoyle looked clearly disappointed with the decision, stating that it was out of his hands.
The team are still scheduled to participate in the Premier Calendar races, starting tomorrow at Rutland-Melton Classic, but rumours are high that those races could be cut next.

Great race for Villella, too bad he couldn't get into the top 10.
Rapha is doing a good job of making life very hard for the entire team. |

@mvh: Top 10 looked a possibility up until the peleton hit the climb to the finish on the final stage. And yes, Rapha need to answer some questions!

Sorry no update this evening! I have gone from the most active last night, to the least tonight...
Was involved in an accident on my bike coming home from work and spent most of the evening at the hospital being checked over. I'm all ok just a bruised hip and plenty of road rash

Woah, tough luck. It's good to hear that mostly everything is fine now. Wish you a speedy recovery from the bruises.
