IDK what they are thinking for Fernandez. At least Farrar could likely get top 5s.

Fernadez is Spanish.
Farrar, well I am sure it was his decision too. Riders usually get their big say in what races they like to ride in and target..

Well he obviously didn't want to do any races that matter then. Which makes sense how?
And he isn't going to Colorado. So he is literally doing nothing.

I think it's a great choice by Farrar. Maybe I'm wrong again, but to me it seems like Farrar tried to become a Classics rider, but in this proces he lost some speed just like Sagan (he didn't win any regular sprint this year in the TdF, last year he beat Greipel as an example). I think Farrar should take focus on the WC or the new season, instead of getting into the fire in the Vuelta. |

He specifically said at the beginning of this season that he was going to try to focus on being a GT sprinter again. Then he doesn't ride a GT.
Doesn't seem right.

Is he leaving Garmin?
JV hates racing riders who have signed a contract elsewhere.

As we explained to you before the Tour, you have to earn your spots in GTs unless you are a young rider who needs it to improve. Farrar has not done that and I doubt that he will ever earn a spot at the Tour again.

So why not release him? he obviously isn't worth a contract so why bother keeping him?

Because he may have performance based pay. A lot of riders who were great a few years ago accept a large pay cut but get clauses in their contract that give them massive bonuses if they get wins etc. I wouldn't be surprised if Farrar is on that sort of contract

Oh and vaughters knows the value of having a recognisable American name in his team for the commentators to talk about.

But it's not worth paying him anything at all if he is uselss?
I still believe he is their best sprinter. And to send so many lesser guys before him is ludicrous.
He can never prove that he can still win sprints if he's never in those kind of sprints!

Keep in mind that he is also a decent domestique over the flat and in cobbled races. He has his uses. But I think it is primarily the fact that he is probably cheap and also American.
Do you know when his contract expires? He may have signed a four year contract initially.

Garmin Sharp
Caleb Fairly
Koldo Fernandez
Alex Howes
Michel Kreder
Dan Martin
Nick Nuyens
Alex Rasmussen
Johann Van Summeren
The final place will go to either
Tyler Farrar
or
Robbie Hunter
Interesting team, hope they take Farrar, he's a good chance to take some wins with a lack of a decent sprinting field at the race, real lack of support in the mountains for Dan Martin too. |

They changed that team alot in a day. Fairly in for Raymond Kreder. Van Summeren for Zabriskie, And they took out Stetina. No surprise since he is leaving.
Farrar could still be in the squad.

Robbie Hunter

Howes should be good support based on recent performances.
Van Summeren used to be a good support rider in mountains, but he needs to be back at his 2010 level.
Fairly can climb a bit too. He won't drop any GC contender, but he can make some early push. |
