It's a british thing.
English match analysts such as Jonathan Wilson and Michael Cox have written a lot about it: compared to the media in most of the world the british media know less than nothing about tactics, so if a team loses they just say 'they didn't try hard enough'.
When you're a british fan and you've been hearing and reading that all your life...it's hard to think any other way.
It's frighteningly common to hear a british journalist say that there's no such thing as tactics and a coach just has to 'get the players motivated and tell them to get on with it'.
It's why Harry Redknapp tries hard to pretend he's like that when in reality he's a bit of a tactical savant: he knows he needs to, to be liked by the media.
I didn't watch the game, I'm not really a British fan, find the whole counter intellectual streak running though British football ridiculous and I spent my whole life ready football articles written mostly by afp.
The Portuguese players had nothing to play for, they couldn't change their future success in any way. Once they had taken the lead there was no reason for them to try and put as many past Luxembourg as possible.
Maybe Portugal's tactics are crap, I wouldn't know, I haven't watched, but a three nil victory in a meaningless game against an toothless opponent isn't match you can base any sort of tactical conclusions on.

Finally, this embarrasment is over. We've been crap before, but wow... just wow, we've set a new standard for piss poor this year.
If the results weren't bad enough, the national football association is under extreme amounts of critisicm for the way they fired Egil Olsen with only two games to go before his contract ran out.

Phew England, job done! Lovely goal by Stevie G in at the end!
Got to be honest I was expect a Lewwy goal combined with a Joe Hart clanger. |

Which is why I replied to his post, not yours
Fair enough, I assumed that I was the Brit you were referring to.
Sorry for the tone of my last post.

Congratz to Bosnia for their qualification. Deserved it, they have a great generation of players. As for us... France... here we come... |

7-9 in two games against Germany, not that bad. Really entertaining games. I do hope for Greece or Ukraine in the play offs. Portugal would be a nightmare. |

Portugal-Sweden would be a shame cause it'd mean one of the three best players in the world wouldn't be on the WC.
If Portugal don't qualify that would make a really bad spot on CR's legacy.

Impossible. Both Messi and Iniesta are already there.

Very pleased that Romania got into the Play-Offs. I suppose I'll cheer with my yellow Bergenbier football scarf I got somewhere, I think when I bought beer.
As for Austria, shame we couldn't holp up against Sweden in the 2nd half. Elmander is now my most hated person... until some else manages to piss me off in such an absurd, unnecessarcy manner.

Play Off teams:
Croatia (A), Sweden (C), Romania (D), Iceland (E), Portugal (F), Greece (G), Ukraine (H), France (I).
The top 4 teams are seeded according to FIFA Rankings.
As of today those 4 teams will be: Croatia, Portugal, Greece, Sweden
Projected rankings tomorrow suggest: Portugal, Greece, Croatia, Ukraine
With Platini at the helm it WILL BE: Portugal, Greece, Croatia, France
With France facing Iceland, being at home in the all important 2nd leg. Ribery to handball a goal and Iceland denied WC entry.

I already feel Bosnia to the WC is awesome! With Iceland there it'd be perfect.
About the groups at the WC itself:
Pot 1: Brazil, Argentina, Spain, Germany, Belgium, Switzerland and Colombia are sure. If Uruguay qualifies, it's there as well. If they don't, the Netherlands or Italy will get that spot.
Don't see how the hell Switzerland got way up there. Spain will be happy though

Colombia has some very good players (J. Martinez, Falcao, J. Rodriguez etc.) but I'm clueless about Switzerland here
