That's true. I don't listen to modern (pop) music either.
Though this is the case in many genres, nowadays it's worse then in the 60s, 70s, 80s. Take rock, for instance, it used to be good in 70s, but now there are only a few good songs being made.
That depends. If you take Alternative Rock, for instance, there have been some awesome bands later on as well (if you take Oasis or R.E.M. as examples). Then again, their best times are behind them, so I agree on actual current chart hits.
Spoiler
I wouldn't agree that music in general got worse though. If you listen to the right radio channels or go to a local club every now and then, you do get to hear really, really great music. Also, I didn't really experience "the old days", since my actual listening career (really listening and percepting what I hear) started maybe 5-6 years ago...

Hahah, "Pitbull saying weird things" is just too frequent in today's music. I can't possibly listen to commercial radio here, all that ever gets played is shitty pop/techno/pop/pitbull. All the music I really listen to these days is from the 90's and early 2000's, but I like hip-hop so no surprises there.

Do you like old Wu-tang? They were epic, that is what rap should be about and how it should sound? Nowadays hip-hop is unfortunately only about rich ego masturbaters and records sellers.
As i criticize almost every kind of music here, you maybe wonder what i listen to Most of you probably dont know the style at all, but i am an of post-rock and noise/screamo/lo-fi. The well know bands of the past who started this kind of electro/guitar style were Sonic Youth/ Pixies/Swans.
Now some of my czech friends are organizing concerts for similar-sounding bands from all over the world.
I also like the classic rock of 60s and 70s and grunge also (Nirvana FTW!). But my absolutely most favourite band are the Doors, i love Jim and their melodies. In these times, music was about something, now it is empty...
I think that too much music is the same nowadays. Guetta sound like Afrojack sound like Bruno Mars sounds like Black Eyed Peas etcetera (well, not exactly of course, but cunego59's spoiler says it all).
Still some good music is made nowadays! Listen to Kyteman's Orchestra (new album out a few months ago), a great mix of hiphop, opera, etc. Or the Dutch singer-songwriter Blaudzun (who is a great cycling fan by the way, made a great documentary about Il Lombardia). Also looking forward to the new album of Muse!
I also enjoy hip-hop quite a lot, but I mostly listen to German hip-hop. German hip-hop is split up in two different types, basically. The more popular, and more successful, "aggro gangster shit" from guys like Bushido or Kay One (I don't know if they're know abroad. I would hope they aren't ). And then there's some pretty awesome stuff, mostly from Hamburg and Stuttgart, with great, deep and intelligent lyrics, fantastic rhymes and beats. Die Beginner or Blumentopf as an example. That's what I listen to quite often. It's sad that hip-hop is almost exclusively associated with gangster rap in public, since there's a lot of fantastic other stuff with probably the best lyrics of all music genres.

Big Swans/Pixies/Sonic Youth fan - hoping Swans will tour here soon, have to see the live show. Springsteen is still the best though...and I won't take any argument.

Yeah, i also would like to see Swans live, unfortunately they are doing some US concerts only this year + some summer festivals like in Katowice,Poland.
I was on Sonic Youth concert maybe five years ago in Prague, they were performing Daydream nation cd, best experience ever.
And i agree Bruce is very good also.
Oh, yeah, I like them even better than Nirvana.
No disrespect for Nirvana, but I find them a bit overrated, they're good, but there are many better bands.
U2, Muse, PJ Harvey, Violent Femmes, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, White Stripes, Adele, Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds, The Velvet Underground.... and much more... some are old... you should check Violent Femmes and PJ Harvey if you don´t know them...
Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Metallica, Guns N' Roses, Maximo Park, Franz Ferdinand, RHCP, AC/DC, Motorhead, Meat Loaf, Steppenwolf, Blue Oyster Cult, Placebo, Blur, Oasis, but also The Beatles, Buffalo Springfield, Coldplay, Keane, Electric Light Orchestra, Queen, We Are Scientists, Phoenix, Moby, Snow Patrol, Gorillaz, City and Colour, Vangelis, Supertramp, Buckshot LeFonque and James Blunt.

So yes, that's pretty broad
Love that list. Especially Deep Purple, they might be my favorite band, with The Doors, that is
EDIT: Free Bird by Skynyrd is legendary, what a solo!
