Volta a Portugal: Stage 8
Profile:
After 7 hilly stages, a time trial will shake up the overal. The weaker time trialers between the contenders probably feared this day as the 30 km long route will make some big differences.
Sioutsou was one of the first favourites to start. He bettered all previous times so the Belarussian takes the race lead.
51'57"
Blel Kadri has surprised a lot of observers these last couple of days with some strong performances. And he keeps going and betters Sioutsou's time with 9".
51'48"
David Blanco wanted to use this day to grow his lead on his oppontents who are not known to be good TT'ers (Txurruka, Chalapud). His plan was to start a bit slower and up the pace on the hill near the end.
Tejay Van Garderen was the pre-race favourite after winning the opening prologue. He was clearly tired after doing a lot of work for Albasini as he sets a disappointing time, 42" slower as Kadri.
52'30"
Blanco's plan was very good. He could up his pace a lot on the last hill and almost passed Chalapud who started 2' in front of him. He sets a good time but can't beat Kadri.
52'07"
Race leader Albasini's lead is over 3' so he has nothing to fear in this TT. His lead decreases to 2'30" on Blanco but that's still very comfortable. The stage win goes to Blel Kadri!

Very good TT by Blanco. It looks like he is in a very good position to take the 2nd place.

Volta a Portugal: Stage 9
Profile:
Geox squad:
A stage with 3 tough mountains will be the queen stage. The last mountain is almost 30 km long so big gaps between the contenders can be expected. Duarte will go for the stage win while Blanco will try to keep his 2nd position.
A break of 6 brave riders gets formed early. Vanspeybrouck, Vanotti, Bauer, Sabido, Scheirlinckx and Minard are all good riders who already showed something this Volta but they are no danger on today's mountains.
Starting the first real mountain, Garcia attacks out of the pack. He will close the gap to the escapees and win both mountain sprints. He will be the new leader in the KoM-standings.
The pack never lets the escapees their advantage grow to much so they can start the final climb with an advantage of 2'30". The pack isn't too big anymore then.
Duarte attacks immediately at the start of the final climb. He will easily create a 1'30" gap to the pack. Vanotti is the only rider from the escapees who can follow him for a while but not for long.
It takes 15 km untill someone reacts. Txurruka attacks from the bunch, what remains doesn't really look like a bunch actually. He will stay 50" behind Duarte though.
What is that?? Race leader Albasini is in trouble! He has shown no weakness so far but now has to let the others go with still 13 km remaining.
Duarte still has a good lead on Txurruka under the 5 km banner. Txurruka is 50" behind. The Colombian can control the race and can even raise his pace further.
Herrade has almost closed the gap to Txurruka. These two have a small advantage over Blanco and Quintana. From Albasini no trace yet.
Fabio Duarte can keep up and takes a great victory after a solo on a mountain for almost 30 km. Great victory for the young Colombian!
Txurruka crosses the line 45" later to take 2nd and Herrada follows 15" later to take 3rd. They are respectively 2' and 1'30 behind Blanco so we have to wait untill he arrives.
He crosses the line as 5th in the wheel of Quintana. He only lost 1'40" to Duarte so he keeps his 2nd place.
NO! Although he could count on the help of both Van Garderen and Sioutsou, Albasini lost almost 5' on Duarte and loses his lead to Blanco! Txurruka, Herrada and Albasini are all between 37" and 45" behind him.
Results:
Great stage win for Duarte. He proves he is ready for the Vuelta!

What a great stage for our team. Duarte won after a solo of 30 km. We were thinking about letting him wait for Blanco to help but we didn't do that. And that turned out to be a good decision as Blanco could do it alone. Great stage!

Volta a Portugal: Stage 10
Profile:
An easier stage after yesterdays monster climbs. We will ofcourse defend Blanco's jersey with everything we got.
A large break of 20 riders got away early. We had no problem with them so we didn't chase them but some others did it and brought them back.
Dall'Antonio then made an attack. He could ride away and a chase by Belda didn't suceed. The Spaniard is riding 3' behind the Italian, the pack is even 3' further.
There, we control the race but not with a hard pace. And no team wants to take up that responsibility so Dall'Antonio's lead keeps growing.
Fothen, Kadri, Sioutsou and Txurruka made an attack on the penultimate climb. Blanco could count on his whole team to chase them back so they can't get away.
Dall'Antonia passes the KoM-sprint with an advantage of more as 8' on the pack. He can already start celebrating his victory.
The final hill is again the sign for Sioutsou and Txurruka to attack. We can keep them very close but Txurruka could pick up 4" on the intermediate sprint.
No other notable attacks came so the pack is still very complete when passing the 10 km banner.
Tiziano Dall'Antonio takes a very nice victory after a long solo attack. Great ride by him. The 2nd victory of his career after the Giro TTT last year.
The slight uphill sprint in the peloton is won by Txurruka in front of Albasini. The Basque so takes 12 more bonus seconds to Blanco who never came in danger today.

Good stage. Smart the let the escapee go, otherwise Txurruka would have taken maybe 20". Tommorow doing the same and we have a great win.

Thanks to all!
Volta a Portugal: Stage 11
Profile:
Blanco is 165 km off of his 4th win in a row in the Volta a Portugal. The only chance for Txurruka, Albasini or Herrada to pass Blanco is creating a gap on the steep hill 3 km from the finish. But the whole Geox team will try to prevent that.
A breakaway of 8 riders got formed on the first part of today's route. They have an 6' advantage over the bunch with 70 km to go.
Some weaker teams are for some unknown reason chasing back the breakaway. We don't have any problems with this as we don't have to do any work.
The chase of those teams was fruitless as the gap to the escapees never came under 3' and is now again growing.
The bunch passes the 10 km banner and no favourite has attacked Blanco yet. Do they all wait for the final ascent?
3 riders could drop the others on the last ascent. Gouillou, Wallays and Blot are sprinting for the victory.
Gouillou, the less famous of the three takes a great win for him and his team. Wallays is 2nd and Blot 3rd. Blanco and his teammates finish safely at the front of the pack and no opponent even attacked him so he takes the overal win!

Great victory. Our first win in a stage win this year is very nice. Blanco wins the Volta for the 5th time (2006, 2008, 2009, 2010) now and is the only rider with 5 overal victories! Also nice to see Duarte and Felline take stage wins. Great race for us!

Stage wins: Cancellara, Farrar, Boonen, Pozzato, Cancellara, Farrar and Mol.
The Eneco Tour was the next UWT-race on the calender. The results show that it was a stage race made for one day classic specialist. Tom Boonen could defeat the guy he always fights agains, Fabian Cancellara with 23 seconds. The Belgian took the lead in the stage over his favourite terrain: the cobbles. He defended his lead against Pozzato and Cancellara in the hilly stage and the TT and used the bonus seconds he gained in the mass sprints to beat the Switzer with 23".

Congrats on Blanco's win of Volta a Portugal! Great job there: good tactics and you waited for the right stages to take the overall. Personally, I liked Duarte's stage-win most .. but that's a matter of taste

Congrats on Blanco's win of Volta a Portugal! Great job there: good tactics and you waited for the right stages to take the overall. Personally, I liked Duarte's stage-win most .. but that's a matter of taste
