Relatively speaking to what it was not that long ago and for the value I got/am getting out of it but yes I know where you're coming from - I'm the guy who rides best budget everything
How do you know?

Finally ordered my World Champion jersey. Yes, this will make me ride faster.

Absolutely! I've decided I need a new, half decent looking, colour coordinated with my bike frame, Giro helmet to give me extra watts |

It's proven that it does! Also, white cycling shoes make you way better against fighting headwind.

No, tbh, I find it weird to ride´with a NC or WC jersey...But I'm riding with a complete BMC kit(when I say complete, I mean complete), so I am not able to critisise others.

Hehe. One simple rule - if you find it fun do it and to hell with what anyone else thinks Fun's what it's all about after all. |

I never properly ride in team kit, it's just normally my club kit or any other jersey I have laying around

I used to ride in a BMC kit, back in 2012, but that was because my only other kit was way to small, and I got the BMC kit for free. But since early 2013 I've just worn my Club jersey and a plain Capo one that I just happen to have.

I really need to get rid of this 53/8 gearing shit. Was nice to get used to riding a proper road bike, but after nearly 2 years, thinks its time to get a little more serious. |

So, February is basically over and with that spring is around the corner. Whilst people get shit tons of kilometers (vertical and horizontal) in their training camps on Mallorca, I'm here, doing my training rides in greyest, dead land of Vienna.
But, I'm pleased with February progress, ended up with way more kilometers (a bit above 1.000) than I thought initally. Weather has been alright I guess, though very cold at times naturally. I had more than once stone cold feet in the shower, but it has been February after all. January has just consisted of running a bit and trying to maintain some level of fitness, though I had originally planned to do at least two, three rides but with my sunglasses-fiasco I couldn't bother.
I tried to already get some early cycling tan going for me on two occassions but the results have been... meh so far. Whilst my arms are still pretty brown from the past of course, my legs are very slowly falling into super whiteness again, hmm. At least I have the hope that I can soon switch the long pants for the shorts. And yeah, I'm actually that shallow that I care about my (cycling) tan.
I havn't managed to repair the hometrainer yet. Damn it. It's an enigma and I probably just give it to my dad or brother when I get back to the family in the coming months. It's way above my level of technical expertise. (Maybe I just buy in a new one till then, grrr. That's what I get for being cheap on second hand material)
I kinda dig riding Vienna quite much by now. I need around 15-20 minutes to get out of the city, and I can even squeeze a little climbing/acceleration action in there in that start, so that motivates for a quick run out of town. However I miss the feeling of taking on climbs at any given point I have back in Tyrol, where I could just go right from the road and hit a wall. Instead, I have to deal with wind challenges on a daily basis, which is something different alright. Ended up pulling a mate of mine on the way back on our 130k ride, so from the feeling, I'm okay with this early form.
Still, with a new university soon beginning in a master-programe and the normal job of course, I worry about the rides. I learned you need to make time for it and when there's a will there's a way after all. So I just plan to do consistent rides throughout spring to be in some well shape for summer to take on some nice rides and maybe even ride something like Giro Dolmiti again or some other "Jedermann"-races.
Just ordered some new ripped sport undershirts. I'm always in such a busy buying mood at the start of the year.

Sounds like good progress Shonak - good luck with the tan
Spring maintenance time for me.
First up my chain is screwed for big ring downshifts (as in moving to easier gears) despite being brand new. As the cassette is fine I probably need replacement cables, so back to the bike shop with wallet in hand for me
Other than that the brake pads need changing, the seat post could probably do with a clean/re-grease and the headset has just started to click again = clean out and re-grease but at least I can do those jobs myself.
I guess that's what you get for riding through the winter grime.

I rode yesterday for the first time this year in shorts. It was pretty cold each time I was in the shadows but boy, the sun felt great on the legs. <3
How long did you use the old chain? If you use it for too long (longer than 5k is the number I think, preferabbly even 4.5k), it's likely that cassete and chain get too much "used to each other", and a new chain does not properly fit in it then.

Huh? Who would change a chain after 3 miles?

Working on the tan at the start of March puts you ahead of the game
Thanks for the chain info. I keep pretty close tabs on chain stretch.
Having got the bike a year ago that's my 2nd chain replacement, both done when the chain stretch was just touching 1/16th of an inch, which should be well before any cassette damage (at least until a few chains down the line) and indeed the cassette looks fine.
The first chain did around 4,000kms through spring, summer and into autumn whereas a better quality chain through half of autumn and all of winter has only managed 2,500kms thanks to the winter grime. I regularly degrease and relubricate, especially in winter when it's done after almost every ride.
I'm still going to play around with the indexing to be sure but...*late night in the garage edit* got myself confused - struggling to upshift to harder gears would've been indicative of cable friction - the opposite to my problem of reluctance to downshift to easier gears.
Anyway indexing did the trick A bit of a discrepancy between the big (wanting slightly more tension) and inner ring (wanting slightly less tension) so there's a very slight compromise on a cog or two but it's shifting cleanly enough on the trainer across the whole cassette.
...and it didn't cost me anything!

...but what will cost me something is buying a new lower headset bearing. Clearly should have cleaned it mid winter as it was totally gunked up and fell apart when removing today
Biggest challenge is finding the right replacement part :/ |
