Cycling betting
changwilly
Hi I work at betfair exchange and I would be quite into my cycling. I'm currently trying to improve our offering for cycling events but as is the nature of the exchange people are needed to price up the market so at the moment I'm loading more events than we used to offer but they're not being priced up. I was wondering as a betting product is cycling somehting many people would bet on and does anybody know of people or groups that actively lay these markets? Apologies if this isn't relevant to this forum and if not if somebody could point me in the right direction of where else I might look that would be much appreciated Smile

Cheers,

Shane

Well as someone that bets on cycling really only when sure about what I'm doing, I actually doubt a lot of people do otherwise. Cycling is an unpredictable sport, there are not a lot of sports that are as hard to make predictions for and clearly it's relatively inconvenient for bookmakers to make any bets besides the ones for instance bet365 puts up for the big races.

From an unbiased point of view, I'd imagine that the profits bookies get from cycling are much minor compared to quite a lot of other sports because you gotta be actually crazy to spend serious amounts on it, as some do on football (soccer), tennis and such. Which is also why head 2 heads are so popular, guessing a winner of a race, especially in certain stages of stage races, is infinite times harder than betting on who will cross the line first between two riders. That's also where analysing comes into play and is not mostly pointless.

Making money from cycling is not impossible, obviously, as this thread showed in the past months. It's just that it takes some dedication to find the best stuff to bet on and do so quickly in order to defeat the bookies in the long run.

Thanks for the reply. So you think introducing match bets for rider v rider or team v team when available would be good markets to have?

Also some races like a lot of European tour one day events have some big names in them but they are not always on TV. Would this majorly impact whether or not you would bet on this race? So Winner/Top 3 don't generate a lot of interest. Do you think match bets would be good markets to have here?

Thanks again for the response.

I would say so. But I am far from sure myself, I just guess that normally the few people that bet on cycling throughout the year, at least from my experience, prefer H2H to Winner/Top 3 kinda bets.

About the races you were talking about, I notice that Bet365 only ever has bets up for the more important non-World Tour races, e.g. Strade Bianche, Omloop Het Nieuwsblad etc. which are both turning WT anyway. Both the ones I listed are very popular and potentially generate interest betting-wise because they meet the criteria of being televised and having startlists that are often on par if not better than some World Tour races. Sometimes, however, you can only bet on the winner for those, while it would be a drastic improvement if one had the chance to bet on rider vs rider as well.

I agree with Matt on a lot of this, especially on the desire for more H2H bets. When you've got a field of 200 starters it is such a risk to take if you are only betting on a winner, especialy in comparision to a Football/Rugby/Cricket/Tennis match with a lot fewer outcomes. I'm going to take the bet on Football because it's less of a risk, even at the same odds.
An H2H goes a long way to rectifying that and balancing the risk better. Ok it will come with shorter odds but i'd be happier with that than no viable option.

Also i'd personally like to see some consideration given to Womens Cycling. At various points this year, and last, i've spent time trying to search out some bets for womens cycling events and come up empty. This goes for marquee events like the Olympics and World Championships, not just WWT or smaller races.

But ultimately as Matt concluded, it takes time to get things right and the market isn't big.

Thanks again for the responses! H2H seems to be coming up A LOT and it also makes an awful lot of sense to have these when you consider field sizes so this will certainly be a priority to get these up. As regards womens events I've mentioned that to my managers about the upcoming worlds so it's possible we might have them for that. As for future races that's something I can look into as well. Obviously start with the biggest and if they prove popular can add more. Did you find any bookie that offers the women's races?

Outright winner risky? Pfft
Good times. Earned 6K that day, LOL.

Didn't really bet throughout the Vuelta since my TdF-campaign was pretty bad. Squire, your classics-point may be viable, but it very fucking much depends on the weather. Hmm. Only at 888sports atm and theres only outright winner atm, but gonna look into it and post something here.

Edit: I see thats the case many places. Probably too scared to get fucked since nobody really knows whats gonna happen.

Well, Ewan abandonded long before Trentin. I was secretly hoping Roelandts would try something like Veelers did, but that was pretty unrealistic. Don't regret backing him though. The odds of Boonen getting a puncture in the desert like Degenkolb & Cort was better than 150-1 I guess.

I don't currently have an account at Bet365, but if someone do, they might be interested in two pretty juicy match-ups for today's Andalucia stage.
Reichenbach (1.33) v Pinot (3.00)
Landa (2.37) v Rosa (1.53)

I have Landa at 2.37. Pinot wasn't that high when I checked late last night, unfortunately.

I have gotten a ridiculously good start tho. I somehow hit Arndt at 51.00 in Evans' Ocean Race and had Barguil at 2.75 over Navarro for 300 DKK yesterday.

I found Pinot live at 3,00 as well. What a steal - thanks! Please do continue.

Don't have duels for tomorrow. Aiming for gold instead, Rosa for the stage at 200,00 and Valverde overall at 17,00.

I know you're a big fan, so you're probably not very happy about it, but Izagirre's crash was economically very lucky for you. Smile
