Belgian National Championships - Time Trial
Time for the national championships. I was very keen on a good result in the Road Race. Like I said before, I have been training specifically for the Road Race this year. Now it was time to put all that training to the test.

I will just test my legs today. A top 15 would be nice.

Not a bad result, actually. A surprising winner for most people, but Campenaerts is an up-and-coming time trialist, I've trained with him before!
Belgian National Championships - Road Race
Profile
Finally, it's time. A local tour around Poperinge. I've done the circuit a million times this year. I've trained hard for this. I will only be satisfied tonight when I return home with a tricolere jersey. It's ambitious, but I know I can do it.
My biggest disadvantage? I'm all alone. No Belgian team mate, which might hurt me...
This championship had been talked about a lot in the Belgian media. Some of the favorites before the race:
Philippe Gilbert: We'll see for today. I've marked this race on my calendar and I'll definitely try to shake the sprinters on the hills.
Tom Boonen: We have a strong squad here and we have several team mates who can win. If I survive the hills, I know I can perform well in the sprint.
Kris Boeckmans: It'll be hard to keep my jersey but it's not impossible. I've been feeling good and I hope to keep this up, starting today.
Jan Bakelants: My role for today is obvious: if I want to win, I'll have to attack.
Matthias Vleminckx: I'm in for a tough race today. It's no secret I have my mind set on a victory today, but I'm isolated so I'll have to wait and see how the race pans out.
It seems everyone was ready for the race to begin. We were all eager to get to racing!
Live Coverage
Commentary by José De Cauwer and Roger De Vlaeminck
Welcome to one of the most exciting days of the year, the Belgian Road Race. The Belgian tricolore jersey is very wanted jersey in the peloton. Also welcome, Roger De Vlaeminck, two time winner of the jersey. Who's your favorite for today?
I've seen a very strong Philippe Gilbert this season, he's ready for this race. But I'm leaning more to Paris - Roubaix winner Vleminckx today. It's one of his main goals of the season and if you look at what he did in Roubaix, that was just fantastic. Though he is just one man, against those teams that might be a hard task.
I guess we'll find out soon. The riders just started the 236 kilometer road race.
Vleminckx is playing it cool. He has to keep a low profile and hope the other teams forget he's even there. Only that way he can profit from their efforts in chasing the breakaway.
And now the race really begins! After a failed attack by Thomas De Gendt, we now see Philippe Gilbert deliver his promised attack! We are two laps from the finish, can he keep up his effort all the way?
He's strong, you can see it. But it's still a long way. I think he regrets that nobody went with him.
And it's Topsport Vlaanderen left to do the chasing.
That won't be enough. Gilbert has experience and knows where his limits are. These are just some young riders, they won't bring him back.
We're in the final lap of the 2015 Belgian Road Race, we're on the first ascension of the circuit. Lotto is trying to c-- And we have an attack!
It's Vleminckx. He's been hiding in the pack and he's coming out at the perfect moment. Gilbert is at 30 seconds and he's trying to make the jump!
He's getting away. Lotto is chasing him down but Vleminckx is strong!
He's caught him. He's with Gilbert, they'll stay away and sprint for the victory.
He's not there yet.
And now he's there. What a fantastic finale. They look at each other. Watch out guys, don't lurk around too much!
Vleminckx doesn't wait for the sprint, he attacks!
And Gilbert can't follow, it's over. Vleminckx wins this.
We have Renaat with the number two of today, let's go there.
Philippe Gilbert. So close today.
Yes. I attacked too early and was all alone at the front. When Vleminckx was at my wheel, I knew it was over.
We go to the winner of today, Matthias Vleminckx, congratulations. You're the Belgian Champion.
Yeah, it's wild. It was a very difficult race so I can't believe I just did what I did. But I'm taking the jersey home with me and one of these days it'll sink in for sure!
You came here to the start without any team mate, then you see Gilbert attacking, what were you thinking?
I really was nervous when Phil went. He's a star rider and you can't let someone like him ride. I really missed a team mate to control the race a bit today. But I kept my cool and decided to go after Phil in the next and final circuit.
Where will we see you with this jersey for the rest of the season?
I'll be going to the Tour of Austria and the Tour of Poland. I hope to show the jersey here in the Eneco Tour. We'll have to see what else.
The World Championships?
I think I just gave the national coach my card today.
We're ready for the podium now.

Yes! I've got it! It was one of my main goals this season and it's great to take the jersey home. I'll be extra motivated to perform well in Austria and Poland, two races that were a big success for me last season. Here's some more news:
Cancellara - Over and Out
Cancellara missed the cobbled season due to an injury. Trek Factory Racing was very secretive about the injury and we have found out now. It turns out there have been an internal investigation against Fabian Cancellara. The team and the UCI suspected the Swiss World Champion Time Trial of using doping.
The evidence was overwhelming and Cancellara has been suspended for 2 years. The Swiss reacted by offering his apologies to his fans and he declared to hang up his wheels. He retired immediately.
This is sad news for cycling and another dark page in our sport's history...
After long negotiations, Orica - GreenEdge decided to prolong my contract with an additional two years! I'll be making 65.000 €/month and I'll be an absolute leader. I also have a word in signing a new rider to strenghten our classics squad. We're looking around as we speak. More information later!
The Tour of Poland has explicitely asked me to participate again this year. They offered the team money to bring me to the start line. Since I planned to race there, our answer was easy. It's great to see a race of that caliber asks for me specifically. I'm honored!
See you in Austria,
Matt

Right where do I start... Great win in P-R - you get one banana for that
You would get another banana for the Nat Champs result but I'm not liking the Cancellara Doping addition... No offence but I have seen a lot of 'big rider doping' being added in stories and I thought you would have been better than that

Jakstar22 - Thanks!
sutty68 - It is great indeed!
the_hoyle - It was the best thing to do. For some weird reason, Cancellara retired last season already, I just missed it. I didn't think Cancellara retiring in 2014 was plausible, so I gave it a twist.
welker3257 - Not as big as Roubaix, but still an amazing win
TimoCycling - Thanks |

Great win, great story, but Cancellara-doping... Doesn't look that realistic. |

VoetT - Real happy to have you on board Hope you catch up well! You can always use the palmares on post 2 to catch up quickly.
FonsDeSpons - Well now you have your answer
dark_x2012 - Not realistic? Maybe not more than any other guy, but there's almost 0% he's riding around on water and bread |

Yes, but he's one of the great riders that have never been accused of using doping (except the motor under the saddle)...
And I really wanted to see how Matthias and Fabian riding next to each other fighting for the win in Roubaix

Well it wasn't planned or anything. My game decided he wanted to retire at the end of 2014 so I thought it'd be better to make him leave this way because I don't see why Cancellara would just retire at the end of 2014. |

You can watch this (but without Matthias) in Trek story, anyways. [powered by Admir ads!]
Anyways, this story really progressed too fast for my liking, you started getting some huge results so fast and I am definitely not the fan of it, but it's your choice at the end, anyways (winning everything in your 2nd season, really?). I am still trying to follow, but it's almost impossible with this pace.

I personally would have preferred some thing like a bad training accident for Cancellara that forced early retirement in the off season. But it is your story and your choice.

I've never seen such a ridiculously OP youth, with the sole exception of Sagan.

Yeah because he already won the Omloop, Milan - San Remo, E3, Gent Wevelgem, De Ronde, Amstel Gold Race, the WC, the Green Jersey at the Tour, a single race in a GT and everything else. You're right. Being winner of Kuurne, Roubaix and the NC is just ridiculous. Could never happen in real life. Imagine someone winning Roubaix. That could never happen. |
