Really things are looking great in both spots right now. Thanks all, Phinney was spectacular (had a +5 day) on easily the most important day of the race for him.

Anyhow recap for stage 9 is now finished and posted up above. Very exciting stage.

EDIT: Of course this goes onto the next page... so recap for stage 9 should be near the bottom of last page...

Is it just me or is that Phinney's actual face?

Amgen Tour of California
May 14th, 2014 : Stage 2
San Francisco – Santa Cruz County: 188.9 kms - Hilly

Stage two is mostly flat until a pair of climbs in the latter part of the race that will certainly shake off the pure sprinters and open the race to the punchers or even climbers.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/ToC/21.jpg

An average breakaway of five riders gets off, and leadership of the KoM classification would come from this group as they should be first over the two category 1 climbs.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/ToC/22.jpg

On the approach to the 2nd KoM of the day, a second group forms from the attacks with BMC pushing the peloton behind though they wouldn't get very far.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/ToC/23.jpg

After making the catch though BMC would have their own plans as race leader Fabian Cancellara tries to power away from the peloton and go for a second solo win.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/ToC/24.jpg

However the field would come back together and the sprint would go to Peter Sagan (Cannondale) who is glad to be back and winning at one of his favorite races. He would be followed by a trio of Blanco riders, reigning champion, Luis León Sánchez, Bauke Mollema and Wilco Kelderman.

Amgen Tour of California
May 15th, 2014 : Stage 3
San José – Livermore: 185.3 kms - Flat

Stage three would continue with the lumpy terrain as the sprinters would again have to work and hope for a finish they could contest in this tour.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/ToC/31.jpg

A small bunch would get away to form the Break of the Day, featuring KoM leader Larry Warbasse, who would not be challenged as the group rolls over the tops of each climb.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/ToC/32.jpg

However on the final climb he would have to leave the group as the fast approaching peloton would threaten his chance for more points.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/ToC/33.jpg

Attacks would come as well led by Garmin's Peter Stetina, and followed by Wilco Kelderman of Blanco. Others would try to make the gap, including Fränk Schleck of Radioshack, however they would only end up helping BMC bring back the attackers.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/ToC/34.jpg

For the first time, we would see a real sprint train as BMC formed up and intended on using race leader Fabian Cancellara to help lead out their fast man Alexander Kristoff.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/ToC/35.jpg

Kristoff would deliver for BMC though not without a surprisingly strong challenge from Gaetan Bille for Radioshack, and Jakob Rathe (Garmin) would finish third.

A nice day for BMC, topping most of the classifications Wink

Giro d'Italia
May 15th, 2014 : Stage 10
Savona – Borgo San Dalmazzo: 222.2 kms - Mountain

Our second mountain stage of the Giro, though not very challenging and also coming a day before a much more difficult so there is maybe a chance for a breakaway or perhaps a small bunch sprint.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/Giro/101.jpg

Knowing this might be a day for the breakaway, plenty of riders were willing to go and a very large group gets time ahead.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/Giro/102.jpg

With a bunch still ahead attacks start on the only major climb of the day as Thibaut Pinot, wearing the white best young rider jersey for FDJ and Dominic Pozzovivo (AG2R) accelerate away from the field.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/Giro/103.jpg

Over the top only Pinot remains out front of the peloton, trying to bridge the gap to the breakaway which has lost much of its lead on the climb and has started to splinter.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/Giro/104.jpg

Everything would come back together on the descent and starting the last climb would see Purito, Joaquím Rodríguez (Katusha), launch his attack on the field while defending champion Nibali (Astana) leads the field and race leader Evans is still staying safely behind his teammate Dominik Nerz.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/Giro/105.jpg

Vincenzo Nibali would make his mark at the top and then using his great descending abilities to catch Rodríguez and try to make this a two man race, as behind the Maglia Rosa leads the bunch trying to catch up.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/Giro/106.jpg

Cadel Evans wearing Pink would be the last rider to join this front bunch on the descent as they approach the finish line. The elite trio of this race and perhaps the podium of both this stage and the tour.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/Giro/107.jpg

And Evans is the first to make a move from the group with only a kilometer to go putting a short distance on the pair behind, and in the back coming around the corner the bunch has made up ground and is trying to pull it back together.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/Giro/108.jpg

The race though would go to Evans as he takes victory ahead of Nibali and Rodríguez, with the small bunch quickly pulling back ground and everyone was given the same time as they crossed the line.

Giro d'Italia
May 16th, 2014 : Stage 11
Cuneo – Briançon: 168.4 kms - Mountain

Stage 11 is the toughest stage of the race yet, with three major climbs on the day, but does finish on the downhill side and thus may not create huge gaps between the leaders. And as usual there is always a chance the break is allowed to go free on a day like this.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/Giro/111.jpg

With a tough mountain course, there was a feeling the breakaway might be able to get a stage win as the GC guys might not get too concerned about a few lost minutes to a breakaway group. So several riders went out front.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/Giro/112.jpg

And that wouldn't be the only break either, as a second group was able to form behind though they would never be able to close the gap to the lead group they would themselves gain several minutes on the peloton.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/Giro/113.jpg

Even with a rider in the first group, BMC would have to control the peloton and set only a soft pace up the first climb behind Martin Kohler. The second climb would be led by Daniel Oss, while Taylor Phinney and Marco Pinotti would work on the third.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/Giro/114.jpg

The attacks though would start to come on the third and final climb as this move led by Mattia Cattaneo (Lampre) would be followed by the Astana riders Vincenzo Nibali and Janez Brajkovic. Forcing the rest of the GC hopefuls to follow and shattering the peloton.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/Giro/115.jpg

On the descent the amount of damage that was done become obvious as only a few riders survived from what was still a pretty large peloton before.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/Giro/116.jpg

Up front though a group of survivors from the first breakaway was about to contest the finish with plenty of gap between them and the GC group. Opening up the sprint for BMC is Ivan Santaromita, followed by Cristiano Monguzzi (Vini), Gianluca Brambilla (OPQS), Rinaldo Nocentini (AG2R) and Andrey Kashechkin (Astana).
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/Giro/117.jpg

And Monguzzi would win, ahead of Nocentini and Santaromita. After these five two more riders, Thomas Dekker (Garmin) and Egoi Martínez (Movistar) would also finish ahead of the GC favorites.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/Giro/118.jpg

A small bunch sprint would ensue from the GC guys later as well with Cadel Evans leading them home and best young rider Thibaut Pinot right beside him. No major favorite would gain or lose any ground today.

Amgen Tour of California
May 16th, 2014 : Stage 4
Sonora – Clovis: 208.5 kms - Flat

Stage four of the Amgen Tour of California would be rather rugged and punchy for the first two thirds of the race, however the last portion is essentially downhill and flat opening up a chance for the sprinters.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/ToC/41.jpg

Only a very small group would get out front today, with this group would be breakaway star Larry Warbasse looking to extend his KoM lead. Ben Day from United Healthcare and Tyler Magner of Hincapie Sportsware Development Team also would be out front and in for a long day.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/ToC/42.jpg

The breakaway would be caught and dropped as the sprint trains formed, with BMC again at the fore but trains of Cannondale and Blanco also look to collect themselves.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/ToC/43.jpg

And Kristoff would deliver again for BMC, though again just edging out Bille from Radioshack. Tejay Van Garderen also would pull a smart move, staying right on his teammates wheel gaining some valuable bonus seconds with his 3rd place finish.

Amgen Tour of California
May 17th, 2014 : Stage 5
Bakersfield ITT: 30.3 kms - Flat

The fifth stage is the long ITT, with a slight uphill finish and a quick downhill start. Most of the route is flat though and anyone who wants to compete for the GC will have to do well here.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/ToC/51.jpg

The best early time set for this ITT would come from Radioshacks Jesse Sergant. His time wouldn't stand up against the top guys, but he would finish 6th today.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/ToC/52.jpg

As the top names came up, local favorite Tejay Van Garderen would start in his US Champions jersey, a kit he always wears being both road and time-trial champion. He would take third on the stage, only 30" behind the eventual winner.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/ToC/53.jpg

Not wanting to lose time to his closest rival, Jakob Fuglsang put in an equally impressive time, finishing 30" back also, and 4th only by tenths of a second behind Van Garderen.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/ToC/54.jpg

But as most expected this was a day for Fabian. The elite time-trialist proved why he is one of the best in the world putting nearly half a minute of time between himself and anyone else. And adding to his overall race lead.

Giro d'Italia
May 17th, 2014 : Stage 12
Briançon – Alessandria: 202.1 kms - Flat

Stage 12 is a pretty flat day for the sprinters, the first of three straight as we prepare for the several mountains in the last week of racing. The sprinters will appreciate the chance again after two days of climbing, while the GC riders look to recover.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/Giro/121.jpg

A standard breakaway takes shape as the skies start to darken overhead. BMC's mountain points leader Ivan Santaromia joins the group though he failed in his bid to take the early points on the stage.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/Giro/122.jpg

The rains would come as the race reached its finish, the peloton making easy work of the breakaway as the sprinters took to the field and the leadout men put down the hammer.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/Giro/123.jpg

Matt Goss (Orica) would take the stage following the great leadout, with Roberto Ferrari in 2nd for Lampre and Tyler Farrar finishing 3rd for his team this year of RadioShack.

Giro d'Italia
May 18th, 2014 : Stage 13
Alessandria – Mantova: 194.4 kms - Flat

The thirteenth stage of the Giro is another flat day, and flat may not even be descriptive enough for this stage. A day built for sprinters though the dark clouds would continue to loom overhead.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/Giro/131.jpg

A fairly solid breakaway of eight riders would get out front early and work to stay away from the peloton none of the riders pose any threat to the GC, so BMC is happy to let them stay away.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/Giro/132.jpg

The team that isn't happy is Orica, riding for yesterday's winner Matt Goss. But it would become apparent that the power of the few Orica riders weren't going to match the breakaway, and there would be no bunch sprint today.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/Giro/133.jpg

It would be the strength of riders like Ramunas Navardauskas (Garmin) and Staf Scheirlinchx (Accent Jobs) that made this break work, and here they try and jump away from the others in hopes of a stage win.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/Giro/134.jpg

The little break would be caught though, and a sprint from the small group would follow with Marco Marcato (Vacansoleil) taking the win ahead of Oscar Gatto (Vini) and Guillaume Van Keirsbulck (OPQS). The main group would come in a distant eight minutes behind.

Amgen Tour of California
May 18th, 2014 : Stage 6
Palmdale – Big Bear Lake: 185 kms - Hilly

Stage six of the year's Tour of Califonia is a medium mountain or hilly stage up to Big Bear Lake. The climb in the later half of the stage is gentle so I wouldn't expect much gap to be made, though it should be enough climbing to drop any sprinters at the end.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/ToC/61.jpg

As usual we have our normal breakaway, the brightly colored seven riders today hoping that this might just be a day for the break as the sprinters won't fancy it, but nor will the GC climbers.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/ToC/62.jpg

An attack on the climb by favorites Jakob Fuglsang (Astana), Luis León Sánchez (Blanco) and Fränk Schleck (Radioshack); but surprisingly BMC doesn't respond! Perhaps not trying to burn out current race leader Fabian Cancellara.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/ToC/63.jpg

BMC will pay dearly for their mistake, with Fuglsang taking the win and the leader's jersey. Sánchez in 2nd and teammate Bauke Mollema coming in third. A complete change in the GC standings after today.

Amgen Tour of California
May 19th, 2014 : Stage 7
Ontario – Mt. Baldy: 116.1 kms - Mountains

After the disaster for team BMC yesterday, today will give new hope, a climbing stage where time can be gained back. The climb isn't particularly challenging until the last few kilometers when they take a steep kick up; it is however long, and most of the day will be spent going uphill.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/ToC/71.jpg

The morning breakaway would see a somewhat large group get away as leadership changed from BMC to Astana, and like yesterday with no rider close to threatening the GC, there may not be a great reason for the GC riders to worry much about the breakaway.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/ToC/72.jpg

But while not worried about the breakaway, they certainly would worry when Fabian Cancellara decided to make an attack in the valley between the two climbs. His move would last for a good length of time and destroy any gap the breakaway had.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/ToC/73.jpg

With the break finished off, one time breakaway member, Larry Warbasse would set the tempo up the climb, with Fabian behind seemingly ready to attack again. Astana would have it's Sweedish Champion Fredrick Kessiakoff up front watching for any move.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/ToC/74.jpg

The big attack would come from Blanco though, not BMC. As Ryder Hesjedal makes his move and none seem up to the task of staying on his wheel.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/ToC/75.jpg

With just under 10k left to ride, Tejay Van Garderen has jumped out of the pack as well with help from his teammate Andrey Amador, he starts to work on closing the gap to Hesjedal, and opening the gap on Fuglsang (Astana).
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/ToC/76.jpg

Tejay finishes the catch, and wastes little time in starting to drop Hesjedal as Astana work furiously behind to try and close down the gap.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/ToC/77.jpg

There wouldn't be enough though to stop Van Garderen from taking the stage, now only the question of how much time between him and the others would determine the GC.
