Hard to keep up with your pace.. Grin .. just don´t brake FDJ.. having some good top10´s, only a win is missing but i´m sure the team will get that too.

@sutty & mvh: some good results. Hopefully we can get a win in Trentino. You will both have to wait and see what the UCI finds Wink

@baia: I got some quick reports out last night, but it will slow again with full reports for Trentino Smile and don't worry, I will not break FDJ

Giro del Trentino
15th - 18th April 2014

img543.imageshack.us/img543/8319/girodeltrentinologof.jpg

And so we arrive at one of the team's big season goals - the Giro del Trentino.

With a good mix of stages over the course of the race, we come to Italy with a team with all bases covered. Remy Di Gregorio will lead the team in the battle for GC, aiding in his fight by Davide Villella and Adam Yates.

With the TTT key to the GC standings, Linus Gerdemann, Damien Howson and Damien Monier boost our TT strength, whilst Caleb Ewan and Philip Lavery complete the team in the Sprints.

Giro del Trentino
Lienz-Lienz -- 128.5km

www.cyclingfans.net/2013/images/2013_giro_del_trentino_stage1a_profile.jpg

It is a tricky opening stage in Italy, where a long flat day is broken up 13km from the end with a steep, sharp climb.

The plan is to look at our GC men, whilst hoping that Caleb is able to hold on and make it over the top. This could be too early in the race for the GC favourites to attack and show their hands.

Race Report

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0001_zpsd11bfdeb.jpg

You have to feel sorry for Reynes... 3 km into the stage, not even a single attack has happened yet, and he is off the back with a wheel replacement. He will comformably ride back into the peleton, but not the best start.

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0002_zps840f5090.jpg

A group formed shortly after the 7km mark, with Fedi (FLA), Van Dijk (AJW) and Russell (TNN) going off the front of the peleton.

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0003_zps70823375.jpg

For a long time, it looked like the break would not get away, as Astana, Sky and Lotto set a fast pace following a further attack from Goddaert (IAM).

Time Gap -- 30km
Peleton > 59" > Leaders

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0005_zps346b2a25.jpg

The quartet worked well together on the stage, and as the pace of the peleton relaxed, they began to build up a nice lead on the road.

Intermediate Sprint -- 75.4km
1. S. Van Dijk // 2. K. Goddaert // 3. B. Russell

Time Gap -- 75km
Peleton > 3'31 > Leaders

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0008_zpsd6c17e80.jpg

As the short climb to the only KoM began, the gap to the break was at around 2'15, and behind attacks began to start, with Sella (AND), Duarte (COL), Kessiakoff (AST) and Westra (VCD) all going off the front.

Time Gap -- 105km
Peleton > 1'17 > Chasers > 1'16 > Leaders

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0010_zpsfcbb0819.jpg

As the summit of the climb approached, another group tried their luck up the road, as this time it was Scarponi (LAM), Bakelants (RTL) and Vanendert (LTB) to attack.

Mountain Sprint (Cat. 2) -- 115.6km
1. L. Westra // 2. F. Kessiakoff // 3. E. Chaves

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0013_zps30617328.jpg

Westra was all on his own over the top of the climb, and was in full 'Time Trial' mode as he descended to the finish. Behind a large 14 man group of favourites, including Froome, Cunego and Di Gregorio had formed with a small gap on the peleton.

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0014_zps1f4dc879.jpg

At the front, this was Westra's stage to lose, and comfortably takes the win in Lienz. Behind, the group of favourites finished as one, but the sprint for the minor places meant that the only time gap was to Westra.

Stage Debrief

I can think that could have gone as well as expected. The management expected a few fireworks on the lower slopes of the climb, and Remy & co dealt with the small attacks well.

There was a small area of fortune with the time gaps, as I thought it was at least a 10 second gap, but I will not complain about it. Caleb did well for his Top 20, considering he was fending for himself at the end.

After the short quick opener to the race, we now look at a Team Time Trial to test the riders.

Our squad has some strength in that area, but it is nothing compared with the likes of Team Sky, Orica-Greenedge and OmegaPharma-Quickstep.

As long as it is not an embarrassment, I will be happy.

Race Report

BMC Racing Team put in a magnificent Team Time Trial to take the victory on Stage 1b. The American team finished 16" ahead of Team Sky in second, with Astana ProTeam completing the podium, with the same time as Sky.

Rapha-Bianchi finished a very creditable 10th place, 1'06 down on BMC, equal time with one of the pre-stage favourites, and our 'best friends' in the peleton, Katusha.

Stage Debrief

I would say that 10th is a very creditable performance for our lads. With only 4 recognised time trials in the squad, we went on to beat some bigger teams in the peleton, and I can only be proud of that.

Remy, Davide and Adam sit only a minute behind Frank in the lead, and 45" down on Froome going into the Mountain stages. The Team Time Trial, and also the gaps from stage 1 further down the peleton, a lot of pre-race GC favourites look like to have had their GC chances written off.

Caleb rode a good first stage and the team performed a decent time trial too Smile

Not bad from Ewan on stage 1 and a good TTT.

Now I'm secretly hoping di Gregorio fails, so Villella can take the leader role. Embarassed

Well done with the lads in stage 1 Wink.. TTT shaked things up a little for Rapha-Bianchi even when they performed well.. but the real thing starts with stage 2, it´s going to be hard but if the squad stays together you never know ..Wink

@mvh: well that is not very nice... Villella will be given his own chance for glory in KoM classification so Yates will be looking after Remy

The first of 3 big stages for the team, as we aim for a Top 5 finish on GC. Linus and Adam will work for Remy, whilst the decision has been made for Davide to aim for the KoM classification.

The rest of the squad will work as domestiques.

A group of 5 riders attacked from the start of the stage, with Villella, Kennaugh (SKY), Garzelli (FAR), Barta (TNE) and Belkov (KAT) making it a very strong breakaway.

Further riders tried to join the break, but sadly Astana, BMC and OmegaPharma pulled every one of them back.

As the break began to increase further, Euser (UHC) attacked to try and bridge the gap.

The peleton seemed happy to let him go, as BMC took full control of the pace making.

In the fight for the KoM jersey, Davide did a great job to take maximum points at the top. He followed the early attacks, before comfortably leaving his breakaway companions behind at the summit.

CRASH! It is a disaster for the team. Remy hits the deck on the descent and it is not looking good...

With Davide up the road, and Adam struggling, Linus was ordered to help Di Gregorio back into the peleton. But he was already 2'44 down on the main group

Back at the front, the peleton was on the final climb to the finish, and the gap to the back was down to under a minute.

Race over for Remy! The Frenchman is unable to continue as he was having difficulty keeping up with Linus and losing time on the GC favourites with every pedal stroke.

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0017_zps66f27ffe.jpg

With Remy out of the race, focus is suddenly turned to Davide. On the climb, the GC favourites bridged the gap to breakaway, with Villella looking strong.

ATTACK FROOME! The Sky man gets out the saddle with 6km remaining and for a short while only Davide is able to follow him.

2km to go, and there is no stopping Froome. He has over 1'30 to the nearest group on the road, with his GC rivals another 36" further adrift.

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0021_zpsa312aec1.jpg

Villella finally cracks on the climb, as the GC men turn on the pressure. To say that he has been in the break all day, this is a fantastic effort from him.

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0022_zps854773b3.jpg

Froome comfortably takes the win, with the Astana pair of Aru and Kangert, nearly 3 minutes later, completing the podium. Villella does himself and team proud, finishing 12th.

Stage Debrief

Mixed feelings just about sums me up at the moment. Losing Remy, who was looking strong, and could have gone when Froome attacked, is a great loss, and makes the chance of a Top 5 GC finish all but impossible.

However, Davide has given the team a show of strength, and a lot of pride is coming his way from the whole team. He attacked at the start, worked all day in the break, and still comes home in 12th! He is now our new leader for the race, and a Top 10 finish is on the cards if he can recover well!

I will sign off with one final thing to say: mvhoogdalem - be careful what you wish for!

Di Gregoro out for 4 weeks

Rapha-Bianchi Racing Team's leader Remy Di Gregorio looks set to be out for up to 4 weeks after a crash during stage 2 of Giro del Trentino.

Team Manager Phil Hoyle comfirmed to the Cycling press that his French GC rider suffered a hairline fracture in his wrist, as well as badly bruising his right hip and thigh.

Whilst no date has been set for Di Gregorio to return, it has been suggested that he will be targeting the Coupe de France race Boucles de l'Aulne-Chateaulin on 27 May.

@sutty: With the stages that are left, and with the right help around him, a Top 10 finish could be within reach.

Bad news about Remy Sad

mvhoogdalem
Pff.. I was just hoping he would have a bad day. Sad to see him out for 4 weeks. Sad

Lets hope Villella stays strong the last 2? stages.

the_hoyle
@sutty: Not the best news, but Trentino was his last major race before a short break. He will just have to work on his fitness for more than originally planned.

@mvh: I know you didn't mean him to crash and get injured. I did laugh though when it happened because it is quite ironic. 2 stages left (one hilly, one summit finish) so hopefully Villella can recover and push on for a top 10

@admir: It is a bit of bad luck, but I am confident that the young guns can step up! Plans were to have Remy try and return sooner than the end of May, but there is going to be some news coming that meant those plans had to change Wink
