Makes me worry about the rest of the season and what some of the races are going to be like. If I was Contador, I'd sit on the back of the Sky train until the last km and then race Froome over the last few hundred meters for the rest of the season. |

That would be reasonable, yes. But thanks gods that Contador is Contador and will try to attack Sky from 50kms out some days maybe. Without him, i would probably quit watching mountain stages this year completly.
You are destroying cycling Sky!Booooooooooooooooo
I dont want to see robots with their power metres and perfectly counted output, eating the mountain like homework, then another, then another......wait only Froome left, so he attacks greatly in last 500 metres. Fantstic show, cant wait for the next....no,just no. /rant over

The dreaded Sky train is clearly getting a lot of people down, I don't really understand it. I've watched cycling for a long time and I have seen this type of mountain climb pacing pretty much on every mountain stage I have ever watched from about 1995 onwards. Sky seem to have perfected the art.
Usually you get a to a critical point and the big favourites slug it out. Occasionally you get a selection earlier, a team or a rider or a group of riders needs to make that happen though.
This year I have closely observed three early season mountain stages - Green Mountain @ Oman, La Montagne de Lure @ Paris-Nice and Prati di Tivo @ Tirrano-Adriatico.
I personally found all three pretty exciting to watch.
Prati di Tivo was Sky at its best (or its worst I suppose depending on your point of view) the Cataldo-Henao-Uran-Froome combination was absolutely immense. It looks to me the perfect diesel climb (especially with the reported block headwind). Personally I think they, Sky deserve a lot of credit for the way they managed to control Contador.

Such a typical Sky win. Boring and uninspiring.
@ smowz - in the past the leaders of teams would still attack at some point whereas here it is just a matter of putting the race to sleep until the final kilometre and then attack or sprint for the stage win then winning the race in the TT. It is a perfectly valid way of winning but it is far from exciting. Even US Postal (who I assume you are referring to) attacked more often than that, Armstrong was at least aggressive whereas Sky just kill that instinct.

Haven't read the topic yet obviously, but watching this on eurosport now with two different commentators - the others were busy at the time commentating P-N - and after years of Paulo Martins it's a huge shock to the system to have a duo where both are knowledgeable of the sport and neither of them is a massive asshole.
Who did the commentary? If it was the same recording I watched on Eurosport with Carlton Kirby and Daniel Lloyd then you were half right. Kirby lamenting the fact that Cavendish was in difficulty today was bad enough but then claiming that BMC were pacing on the downhill to put Nibali in difficulty was just terrible. Lloyd corrected him on that one pretty quickly and Kirby shut up a bit after that.

We end up having this exchange about once a month, and my answer is the usual: I'm not british

Did you really watch the same stage as the rest of us? Because it looked to me like he was the one attacking the most on the final climb.
It's like if I'd call Wiggins a bad timetriallist, just because I don't like him.
Even though I m more of a SCHLECK fan, there is no doubt BERTI is the most AGGRESIVE rider,he is certainly no Wheelsucker. But I can't see a lot of the big favs working with each other(although that seems the only way of beating the dominant SKY TRAIN).Didn't happen in Paris-Nice.Today stage might through some surprises though.Certainly don't want another dull boring sky victory.
Keeping my fingers crossed !!! |

@ Count:
That's just the thing it really is not a sole property of Sky and US Postal this sort of hard pacing. Numerous strong teams have done it. I will admit though that I would like to see Froome attacking from further out, he is becoming a bit like a Purito clone. That said he had beaten Contador twice this season with it, so quite an achievement I guess.
Anyway attempting to change the subject:
1) Nibali did a good ride yesterday I felt, he does have a fair chance in the Giro this year. I have seen nothing from Wiggins this year yet, so we will see about that. Samu was off, this is normal though he'll be better in the Basque country. Evans is a faded force no surprise there, someone may need to have a discussion with him before the Tour this year.
2) I am intrigued to see if Sagan will be there for the win today, if I am honest I think it is a bit too hard for him. But then I though that if was too flat for him the other day and he pulled it off. I think Contador though will try something,

Really looking forward to see that too.
I actually think he'll be in contention for the stage win. It's a long way down from the top of the Lanciano, and we all know how good Sagan is in descents. Even if Contador, Nibali or someone else attacks on the Lanciano, there's a fair chance Sagan stays close enough to the group that he manages to get back.

I am almost counting minutes that remain to the start of some coverage, i am absolutely thrilled to see if Sagan will be able somehow to stay near the front till Chieti wall.
I will be pusing him forward with my mind.
The stage is hard, i give him 50-50 chance to success.
But Contador,Nibali and Purito should be favourites, looking at the whole profile. But Froome will win it anyway.

Btw. just checked Peter's website and he is still having health issues, cough still trubling him, so he has to use menthol drops. Hopefully he saved some energy yesterday, but he says the stage will be very very hard with Lanciano ridden unlike last year.

Pls, no. Really hope that Purito and Contador unite forces and screw Froome around. |

I wouldn't expect too much from Purito. Sure, it's an ideal finish for him, but he doesn't seem to be in best possible form.
Hard to look past Froome doing well, as he seems to enjoy the steep stuff too

Froome proved last year that he doesn't dislike the steep stuff.
Sanchez off form... so sad about that, was looking forward to see him...

Maybe he's not a complete wheelsucker but he has this annoing tendency to attack and if catched then sit in the back until he can attack again. I feel the only time he's willing to take the lead is when he's really sure he can still win in the end.

He's a climber, don't expect him to try to drop the likes of Froome on tempo if he doesn't manage to drop them with attacks. It's the most natural thing that he sits in the wheels for a while if his attack(s) fail(s). |

Today i want Sagan to win (cause i bet on him) even though i'm not a big fan. Will be interesting to see if he can hang on
