Ryan Eastman - Bontrager 2013 February
lennybernstein
Another solid result for Craddock and Boswell looks perfectly placed to move up the GC over the next two stages.

Really enjoying this story. Keep up the great work!

FreitasPCM
Phinney's really strong. Good result with Craddock though. Wink

Miguel98
The team still doing well.

Ryan just about holding on to that Mountains jersey Wink

Losing to phinney isn't any loss Smile

Since school started I've got to admit I've been struggling to keep up with all stories. I try my best to follow but I might sometimes miss a few races. I do like Ryan, though, so I definitely will be here to see him getting better and better results Wink

Thanks all.
Unfortunately I won`t be able to finish Utah before my holiday.
So see you at the 15.10. again.

sutty68
Hope you enjoy your break Smile

Thanks Sutty. Really enjoyed the sunny weather in Turkey. 20°C more than in Germany and far more sun. Wink
Just came back yesterday and won`t let you wait longer. So here the next stage.

Tour of Utah

Stage 5 - Salt Lake City - Salt Lake City (144,9km)
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Utah_5_1-1449.jpg

Todays stage is pretty hilly. The 2nd half is on a difficult circuit with a tough climb ahead of the finish. So we must be concentrated to avoid stupid time loss on this stage. Tomorrow will be the important stage and until then we still want to be in the fight for the overall win.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Utah_5_2.jpg

The breakaway was still not fully formed at the mountain sprint. It was won by Alen Perez, 2nd in the ranking. This also means that he just overtook me and so I will lose my jersey today. We wasn`t focussed on him as we were more or less checking the overall riders.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Utah_5_4.jpg

It took quite some time until 5 riders break free. Boily, Perez, Olheiser, Bertogliati and Baez.
Last two might be the most known. Baez won the Vuelta a Colombia recently but lost quite a lot of time already. Still he is an excellent climber.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Utah_5_6.jpg

BMC is doing a lot to defend the leader jersey. With 5 men they work for Taylor Phinney as the gap is still at 5min with 50km to go.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Utah_5_8.jpg

Still some riders try to attack with 16km to go. Garmin`s Le Mevel and RadioShack`s Machado. Two of the better GC riders and surely a danger for Phinney and the favourites.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Utah_5_10.jpg

They were brought back 5km later and immediately we saw another attack: Steven Kruijswijk, 3rd overall. The Dutch really showed some great performances so far and must be named as top favourite on the overall win.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Utah_5_12.jpg

Also this attack did not work out. With 4,6km to go it was time for us to attack. Joe is our 2nd best placed rider and one of the top3 climbers in this field. Together with a EPM rider he goes already seeing the breakaway with still a solid gap.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Utah_5_14.jpg

Last kilometer. The breakaway is too far ahead and will win the stage. Le Mevel and Dombrowski have a small gap to the BMC train, but this looks like a sprint finish for 6th with most of us still in the group including myself.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Utah_5_16.jpg

Bertogliati attacked on the last climb and wins todays stage solo. Boily comes in 2nd with the other riders following a bit later.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Utah_5_18.jpg

Boswell continues to perform on a very high level. He wins the sprint against Kruijswijk but this won`t help us as the bonus seconds are gone.
At least we didn`t lose time on other favourites but losing the KoM jersey wasn`t planned of course. So not the best day for us and in especially me.

Boswell is doing great (finishing before Kruiswijk! Ryan is getting himself noticed, hope he can take the KoM jersey!

Good result for Ian.

Hope Ryan regains the KoM lead. Anyway, good result from Boswell. Smile

Thanks all. Kruijswijk has not the highest stats after the weaker 2012 season. He is around 75/76. But his form is great so beating him is definitely a success. So Joe and Ian already belong to the best climbers in the peloton. Joe might be the 2nd best behind Nieve I think. But I am pretty sure that I will have weaker races soon again.

Tour of Utah

Stage 6 - Park City - Alta (149,6km)
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Utah_6_21-1496.jpg

Today is definitely one of the hardest stages for us the whole season. A lot of incredibly hard climbs wait for us. The starting field could be a bit harder actually but with some World Tour teams we might see some good riding.
Joe and Ian belong to todays favourites as well, so we might try something of course as we need to improve our position.
I have also some freedoms today and might try to enter the breakaway to get back the KoM lead.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Utah_6_22.jpg

The peloton let 5 riders go. Luckily I was able to enter the break today. So the goal to win the KoM is a good step further now.
A bit unlucky for us that 11th overall Paul Martens also entered to group. But as the long climbs aren`t his biggest strength the peloton let him go but surely will increase the speed later and give us no chance to win the stage.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Utah_6_24.jpg

It was a close fight between me and Jones at the KoM. The UHC rider already had 10 points and still chances to win this competition but here I was a bit faster in the end securing me some more points.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Utah_6_26.jpg

BMC controlled the peloton and didn`t allow us a very big gap. With 90km to go we had a bit more than 3min.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Utah_6_28.jpg

Some riders tried an mid stage attack on the last climb before the longer descent towards the sprint. Jens Voigt, Le Mevel and Capecchi.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Utah_6_31.jpg

Before the top they already joined us as also Mancebo.
Nerz and Kilun also attacked out of the peloton making it 6 new attackers in total.
I was collecting all the points up to here and this should also secure me the 2nd KoM win this season after San Luis which is a great success in especially as we are here in the USA.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Utah_6_33.jpg

With 37km to go we come to the next climb. Immediately the weaker climbers get dropped including myself.
Mancebo, Voigt, Le Mevel, Nerz and Martens form the new leading group with only 1min to the peloton.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Utah_6_35.jpg

We almost reached the Cat.1 and the leading group is down to Mancebo and Le Mevel. They have a 2min gap on the reduced peloton (37 riders), when Pedraza attacks. He is 18th in the overall, 2min behind Phinney.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Utah_6_37.jpg

The peloton is down to 29 now as Kruijswijk accelerates at the front. He lacks the team support and has to work on his own, which is a big disadvantage for him.
Boswell, Dombrowski and Mannion are still safe in the first rows while I lost contact being behind the peloton surprisingly in the same small group as Mikel Nieve who seems to be out of form. There goes todays big favourite already.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Utah_6_39.jpg

14,7km to go we start the final climb. Also the last 3 riders are caught now and the final climb will start with the real selection now, which will decide over the stage and overall win.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Utah_6_41.jpg

Morabito was supposed to do the pace for Taylor Phinney, who obviously wanted to keep a good overall position although the Suisse could have been the better choice. Now he loses contact and the pace drops again.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Utah_6_43.jpg

We immediately use this opportunity and accelerate at the front. Both Boswell and Dombrowski create a small gap as also Le Mevel and one of the Colombian EPM team.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Utah_6_45.jpg

5,5km to go and Dombrowski accelerates another time. Boswell can`t follow him and Joe goes solo already.
A bit behind a group of 6 including 4 EPM riders, Kruijswijk and Howes as best Garmin rider.
Haga, Le Mevel and Peterson another few seconds behind and still ahead of Machado, Danielson and Mancebo.
Morabito stayed with Phinney, which makes it a bad moment for BMC and also Nieve is already more than 7min behind.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Utah_6_48.jpg

The steepest part was the best for Dombrowski and he gained more time in the final coming in solo. Great victory. This will give him yet another stage win and also the overall victory.
He surely will become one of the best climbers in some years.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Utah_6_49.jpg

Boswell was able to finish ahead of the next group losing 1'19 on his team mate which makes it a fantastic day for us.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Utah_6_50.jpg

All riders came in solo now. The mountain was extremely hard and so the fitness level became even more important.
Colorado Hernandez already lost 2min on Boswell and more than 3 on Joe.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Utah_6_51.jpg

Also the next 3 riders came from the EPM squad that had a great team performance today. Le Mevel and Peterson finished afterwards and obviously found their rythm in the 2nd half of the climb again.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Utah_6_52.jpg

Kruijswijk showed some great racing so far. Today he had a bad day I guess. As 9th he is losing almost 6min on Dombrowski falling down to 4th overall.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Utah_6_54.jpg

But the biggest disappointment was Nieve today. Not even top30 today almost 15min later.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Utah_6_55.jpg

I can be very happy with this race. I finished a bit behind Nieve but got enough points to win the mountain ranking which means I will be on the podium later today.

Joe and Ian secured our team a 1-2 in the GC which will move us closer to the secured PCT license next season. We raced far above our best expectations and couldn`t be happier now.

The small American Team Bontrager - Trek is having a very good run recently. With the double win of the Tour of Utah they must be on everyones radar in the fight for the PCT license. As the team manager said some weeks ago, the team is planning with some more popular riders for 2013 if they reach the higher division.

Now we got first information that a Belgium classic duo is supposed to join the team in 2013. No names have been mentioned but both of them already performed on a good level in hard cobbled classics as also in sprint finishes.

Both are no stars yet and are riding for World Tour teams but are not that happy in their teams due to their team role. With Bontrager they probably see good chances to have the leader role.

More news to be announced as soon as we get more information.

Van Keirsbulck perhaps...? Pfft

roturn
Keep the guesses coming. Van Keirsbulck had a contract I think. Otherwise he would have been interesting of course.

Livestrong to disband after the season

Due to the changings in the Livestrong organisation we must announce the end of their co sponorship after the 2012 season.
That plus the fact that the team is supposed to ask for a PCT license also means the end of being a feeder team for WT teams.

They will be replaced by a Belgium co sponsor that will make a press release within the next days.
