Team car said lots of pollen in the air on first climb and that can cause him problems...more likely post rest day blues though I reckon.
If he has pollen allergy, then all my sympathies to him. I have it and can't stop sneezing when it gets too much. Irritating as hell.

+1
On top of that I feel I have less energy, even though I take meds, so I can fully understand these problems. Not to speak about the itchy eyes.
Didn't Landa DNF a couple of years ago as well due to pollen (2016 I think?)

Absolutely gutted that Esteban had allergies, I also know how it feels to have pollen allergies and it sucks. Really pissed off by the fact Mitchelton stopped chasing when they were getting closer but there's nothing you can do I guess. Not going to stop supporting Yates but this just sucks. Hope Chaves feels better in the coming days to help Yates and chase stages.

15/08/22 - SotD said "Your [jandal's] humour is overrated"
11/06/24 - knockout said "Winning is fine I guess. Truth be told this felt completely unimportant."

Chaves actually didn`t mention the pollen allergies post stage.
He said, he just didn`t have good legs there.
His team mate Juul-Jensen added, that also the positioning early on wasn`t ideal for them.
In the end those Mitchelton riders had no chance to make it back with all those other teams chasing hard in the first group. |

Great stage. This is why Il Giro is the greatest race in the world. No mercy on stages like this. One of the reasons for this is the stage design ofc, and this being the 4th stage past the 200 km and 3rd 220+ km stage.

The whole pollen thing was team management speculating from the car mid stage and looking for a possible reason other than the obvious post rest day blues. It was post rest day blues, shame but it meant it was one animated stage.

But it`s discussable if such long stages are needeed in a GT.
In my opinion 21 race days on ~23/24 days is already hard enough. Even if the stages have a max of ~200km.
Those classic/semi classic stages are not necessary and while they add another difficulty factor, it`s going over a line I`d say. You can have a great stage design with regular stages as well. |

Indeed .
few 200 +km. stages ok.
At GT biggest action stages (beside Giro, where is always fun) are short mountain stages. |

Woods struggling today was a bit of a surprise. Was expecting him gaining time today instead of losing to most other GC riders.
Wellens did try, which I like a lot. Today though it didn`t work out for him. but good to have those attacking riders in the peloton. |

Either Yates has just become this strong or he peaked early while everyone else is going to peak later on
