@Tamijo: Yes they are but I set the bar high to see how much I could push myself.
@Croatia: First choice leader is the aim for next season, although at the moment that looks tough.
@Kiserlovski: I adjusted to the Giro-Vuelta combo last year so am hoping I can cope with this too. I'm not racing much post April besides these two races to keep myself fresh. Let's see what I can do.
Looking back on the targets, I too think they're a bit on the steeper side. But given that I want to leadership role going ahead, I think it might be necessary to have an extraordinary year to reach there.

For the first time in four years, I wasn't starting my season in Mallorca. This was the only race of the season which the management insisted that I go to. Given that they gave me the freedom to choose the rest of my season, I didn't resist.
My first visit to South America. I was doing things differently in a season which would have serious repercussions on my future. As far as this race was concerned, I was given a free role while Meintjes led the team. I didn't mind much, as it gave me the freedom to stretch my legs and test my race condition early on in the season. Just the day before the first stage, Meintjes had a bad fall in a training ride and bruised his arm. He was not dropping out but it remains to be seen how it would effect his race.
Stage 1 and I stayed in the pack to try my luck later. van Dingenen joined the break but it didn't work out. The finish saw a bunch sprint and I somehow managed to cross the line in 9th place.
Stage 2 had a sigle climb late on but all it did was reduce the size of the pack that reached the line together. Simon Yates won the bunch sprint.
Stage 3 was flat and we stayed out of trouble. Nothing much to report.
Stage 4
This was one of the stages that would play an important role in deciding the GC. van Dingenen joined th break again. Once again, the break did not survive. I found myself dropped from the group of favourites with just 7 kilometres to go. I hit the pedal to the metal and got some time back. However, I still lost nearly 2 minutes to stage winner Yates. Meintjes finished 3rd. I moved up to 5th in the GC.
Stage 5 was the ITT where I was expecting a good ride. I passed both intermediate time-checks in 14th place, 38 seconds off in the latter. I finished eventually in 18th, 59 seconds down and thats where I would finish after all riders had finished. I remained in 5th place overall.
Stage 6
Another important stage. The climb to the finish provided all the drama. I found myself in an elite group of four riders halfway up the climb. With 5 km to go, I was alone out in front after a small attack. I was caught by two riders with 1.5 km to go. I would finish 3rd on the stage and move up to 3rd in the GC.
Stage 7 was flat. The break survived the day and took home the glory.

A great start to the season. I was very close to picking up a stage win on the penultimate stage. Dunbar's heroics on that same stage meant that I would miss out on the White Jersey this time around. Overall, I was happy with the performance and with the support that the team had provided me. Too bad for Meintjes. His injury ruined a chance for us to have another rider challenging for the top spot.

Damn those goals will be hard to reach, but that's why they're goals/dreams I guess  still, getting a few of those would be great.
Vuelta might be a bit tough after giving all in the Tour!

@Ian: Yeah the goals won't be easy and I probably won't achieve all of them, but I'll surely try.
As far as San Luis goes, Betancur wanted to go to Mallorca and fhe management felt it made more sense to send two of us to San Luis, being the better contested race.

It felt a bit weird mid-way through February not having raced in Murcia. My only race this month would be Andalucia, perhaps my favourite race on the calendar.
Meintjes once again was chosen as the leader of the team and I had to settle for a free role. Seems like we're being paired up quite often this year.
Stage 1 was the Prologue. I was one of the bookies' favourites for the stage win! I was surprised myself with that standing as the field wasn't very weak. On course, I crossed the first intermediate in 3rd place and reached the finish line in 2nd, just 5 seconds off leader Javier Moreno's time. I moved down two places to 4th by the time everyone finished but didn't lose any further time. I beat the likes of Froome and Contador on this stage! Perhaps the bookies know me better than I do myself! Meintjes lost 33 seconds.
Stage 2 saw the peloton whittled down to 70 riders on the third climb in pursuit of the break. The pack started splitting up after the break was caught and I found myself in the fourth group on the road. Despite our best efforts, we could not bridge the gap to the groups in front. I finished 10th on the stage and moved down to 8th in the GC. This stage was a disaster for Meintjes as he lost more than 4 minutes!
Stage 3
This stage had the ___/ profile Spanish races are often (in)famous for. I stayed in the pack till the climb. The break had long since been caught. As the road rose, I found myself out in front in a group of four with Meintjes, Aru and Simon Yates. With 2.5 km to go, I attacked. Only Aru could follow. I outsprinted Aru to take the stage win, almost exactly two years to the date of my first career victory here in Andalucia!! I was up to 2nd place in the GC, 44 seconds behind Aru. Meintjes finished 3rd after dropping Yates. It was a great day for Lotto!

Stage 4 was one for the sprinters and I enjoyed the off day. van Asbroek finished 10th for us.

Stage 5
With the good in the first mountain stage, came the bad in the next. This was my birthday too!
With 40 km to go, all but two members of our team fell in a massive pile-up. We recovered back to the pack, but it definitely had an effect on me. I was dropped again in an innocuous looking hill before the end. I dropped out of the top 10 in the GC and lost my U25s jersey. Meintjes too, had a stage to forget.
Stage 6 was flat again and there wasn't anything of note from our team.

A possibly brilliant result turned into a disappointment because of the Stage 5 incident. Meintjes struggled to compete again, probably still facing the consequences of the arm injury he suffered in San Luis. I picked up 2nd place in the U25s and the Points classifications, but those were mere consolation to what I had to give up. This just makes me more determined to do well in the next race. That would be Paris-Nice and I'll see you then...

I hope Sinha isn't in trouble for attacking his captain. Bad luck with the crash, and the young man also has to learn to be more wary of echolons on seemingly easy stages. Still, a race that'll give him even more confidence, winning the queen stage against Aru. |

I think I'd give it a bit more time. I'd prefer to do the talking on the road.
@Ripley: I never really attacked Meintjes, so to say. He lost time in the ITT and then again on stage 2, without me having attacked at all. So I think the management understands that I was their best GC hope post that. I hope they do, else there could be trouble, like you said.
Winning against Aru on top of the climb was sweeeeeet 
@Aquarius: Looking to get a high placing in Paris-Nice, that's for sure.
@Kiserlovski: Spain really is my favourite racing country. Who knows, maybe what you said could really be a possibility this year!

Starting off with the business end of the season. A podium and a stage win meant my confidence was high going into this month. I was off to France first for Paris-Nice.
The trouble was, so was Meintjes, Betancur and Benoot! All four of us were in the starting line-up for Lotto. I was pleasantly surprised to be a given a free role, the best I could've hoped for. Meintjes would be the protected rider.
The prologue on Stage 1 suited me. When I crossed the line, the leaderboard showed that I was in 5th place, 22 seconds behind the best time. I didn't lose further time after everyone finished. But I did end up 15th. I was the best for our team once again in an ITT.
Stage 2 was flat and I stayed in the pack. Cimolai finished 6th for us.
Stage 3 presented an opportunity to attack. I tried a couple of times, but the peloton would not let me go. I gave up and stayed in the pack till the end.
The first big climbs appeared on Stage 4. I attacked on the fourth and final climb of the day and pulled out half a minute to the pack. Unfortunately, there was still 65 km to go at this stage and once the peloton got past the climb, they reeled me in easily. The stage ended in a bunch sprint with Cimolai 7th.
Stage 5
I did not try to get away early as I believed I had a better chance to make a late attack stick on this stage. The peloton was down to about 20 riders as we rode up the fourth climb. Betancur attacked and got away. However, he would not hold on till the end as he was caught and passed by three others. I stayed with the larger group just behind those four. I moved up to 4th in the GC while Betancur's time gain got him up to 7th. Meintjes was underperforming once again.
Stage 6 was flat and we stayed out of the limelight.
Stage 7 was similar to the last one. We did pick up two top ten finishes in the uphill finish, with Betancur in 7th and Benoot in 10th.
Stage 8 had the potential to be a game changer. A two man breakaway went away early and rode hard through the stage. Aru attacked at the base of the final climb, getting a gap. I too was able to drop the pack by riding a high gear, without actually attacking. However, we were both caught by the time the peloton reached the top of the climb. The descent saw a massive chase to catch the break. The latter could not be caught and survived to win the stage. Sagan took 3rd, and this and other time gains in the flat stages gave him GC victory by 2 seconds over Michael Matthews and by 11 seconds over me.

I was quite pleased with my podium finish here. Must admit, it was a little annoying missing out on a possible race win because of sprint bonus seconds. Sagan was seven seconds behind me after the ITT and we finished with the same time on every stage. He however, picked up the stage ending points on most of the stages and the time bonus that went with it. Betancur also put in agood effort to get 6th. This is the best team outing for a long time. The only disappointment was Meintjes. In a race of small margins, his time was well off the pace.

A podium in P-N is a great result, pretty prestigious and usually the competition is top notch. Admittedly, a tame course this year, no wonder Meinjtes didn't do any better, no fun if there are no mountains to climb. |

With a just a week in between , I headed off quickly to Italy to participate in the Milan - San Remo.
The bumps on the road at the end of the stage gave me hope of possibly surprising the pack with a late attack. Despite being chosen as the leader, I was not assigned anyone to protect me throughout the duration of the race. The early break ran its course and the pack reached the undulations at the end about 90 strong. I tried to attack on the downhill to the finish but was caught by the sprint trains halfway down. Sonny Colbrelli was the hugely popular home winner while I grabbed 12th, the best among non-sprinters.

So close in Nice... Nevertheless a podium is a great result. Also great perfomance in MSR. Maybe it's just attacking in the right place, right moment in order to win it
