Coppel 3rd!
Nice to see some of the more outsider favourites winning, although I quite like Martin, Dumolin, Dennis, etc. this did make a very exciting race.

Martin clearly was off today, Dumoulin has his injury and fatigue, and Dennis had that mechanical, but I still refuse to discount Kiryienka's win and believe that if the big 3 were on better form Kiry would still be in for a medal at least.
Of the long strong-man TTs this year, only 2 top contenders really showed good form: Kiryienka and Dumoulin. And while Kiry took it fairly easy during the Vuelta (he did ride to some extent in the TT but still didn't thrash it), every day was Dumoulin day (sorry Sag) and even without the injury there was no way Dumoulin would come back into good enough form to win today.
Martin and Dennis were good in the TTs they did, but in most of them they were either significantly shorter or contained less strong fields. To add to that, Martin didn't really show much panache against top competition after coming back from his injury (which leads me to believe it greatly disrupted his build-up), and while Dennis did, most of his racing wasn't TT oriented. He would have trained a lot on the TT bike leading up to worlds, but the tactics and form you gain from racing is just that bit better.
The names I didn't list yet in the top 10 (Malori, Coppel, Castroviejo, Bodnar, Bialoblocki and Moser) all significantly surprised me though, especially the last 2.

I still don't get why people are so shocked with Coppel, he's a consistent TT'r and it's the worlds which usually only has a couple of guys in top condition and surely a glance at the top 10 proves that point, he really wasn't that unexpected to podium if some of the of the better riders had a bad day.

Coppel isn't too surprising, but under normal circumstances I would've expected riders such as Castroviejo and Bodnar to get the better of him. But Coppel obviously has some really good form from the Vuelta, from the off it was obvious that Coppel was just gonna go full gas. If he paced himself better he might have even been able to get a faster time.

Nah it wasn't directed at you at all, I can tell you are happy More directed to the folk who seemed to think it was a complete surprise.
Looking back at the last 3 editions of the men's TT Kiryienka really has been consistent with a podium and finishing 4th twice, guess he's always had the big guns turn up in good shape and have no bad luck but today it all played out his way.
Must admit I'm enjoying that these Worlds have been throwing up unexpected results, hoping the road races are as unpredictable and with how the course is designed with a couple short sharp climbs and some narrow streets we could get some good racing

From his freelancing in the Vuelta I could tell all of Kiry's focus was on this. Sucks that I bet on Dennis anyway for some reason.

Guess popping that phial of "marginal gains" worked.
Anyhow, hats off and cheers to Coppel. |

Declan Quigley and rob hatch share the smaller races ,kirby does the bigger ones dont know why hes abysmal. |

When this happened last year at the VaPV it was just painful to see. He needs to get a clothing sponsor which specialises in skinsuits with super-thick super-durable crotches.

Or he could just not do it, pretty simple and also has the added advantage of not damaging your body unnecessarily

Thoughts on this Villumsen bike controversy?
At first I was on the teams/sponsors side but after learning that Wilier really does nothing to give the team they sponsor proper bikes I think she did the right thing. |

Glad for Kiri, Vilmussen and Coppel- one's surprised nearly everyone(not us, obviously), one's finally found her gold, and the latter could have saved his career.
Disclaimer- Most of my posts are me thinking aloud. And most of what I think is rubbish.
