Ah, well, well – what better way to end Week 2 by a good old, wonderful mountain stage? Excitement for the stage is certainly here among the GT contenders and with a renaissance of breakaways in week 2, there are surely lots of hopeful spirits in the peloton who saved their legs for this stage today. It’s a relatively short on with 155, from Cervere to the Monte Jafferau. The real challenge may already be the climb in the middle though, where the peloton heads up to Sestriere. It’s not too steep but the build-up for the last kilometers takes forever and depending on how the peloton races it, this can quickly turn into a true sufferfeast. From Sestriere, it’s then 40 kilometers, and since that’s not enough the finish will be steep. Plenty of time gaps are to be expected on this stage in the border area of the Italian and French Alpes.
Lots of small guys around Francis De Greef and still he gets out of a saddle to give them even more protection from the wind. In the early breakaway, which has about a minute lead onto the peloton, are beside De Greef (LTB9, Rubiano (AND), Gusev (KAT), Burton (ARG), Bakelants (RTL9 and Battaglin (BAR). They have a hard time putting time into Astana, who are chasing behind for whatever reasons, but slowly they manage.
Let’s not waste too much time on the flat parts when there’s so much climbing ahead of us. 35 kilometers from the top of Sestriere away, the climb slowly increases its gradient. The BOTD should give a bit more though by now, their lead is merely 5 minutes. Once Quintana or Nibali start flying again, this will hardly be enough. However, maybe the BOTD will fly up Sestriere themselves?
Well, either the guys upfront work harder – or they just wait for reinforcement, and those are certainly coming! De Las Campos seemed to have found his racing legs at last after yesterday’s stage, Movistar put Visconti upfront for a later relais station (Visconti is also the best placed rider at 18th), ever-active Poels makes another appearance just like Santamorita, and then there are Gesink and Niemiec. And you wonder who that Sky rider is? It’s Rigoberto Uran. At long last, the Colombian may have overcome his injury here at the Giro after the worst week imaginable. Does he look for the stage win or will he have to help Richie Porte later on since the Australian’s rank in GC is definitely not secure yet? Either way, this is a great group, definitely with enough serious firepower to cause for some exciting racing. And they are coming closer to the BOTD by each meter.
While the group of great climbers has caught up with the breakaway up ahead, we take a look at the back of the race. No big names in particularly but look how all those riders suffer here already after two weeks of tough racing behind them. We said it’ll be a sufferfeast and at least for those guys it’s definitely one already.
As if this stage can’t get any tougher obviously... it starts to rain and there are snowdrops too. You may not see them, but odds are, the higher we’ll get up, the more Giro-esque this stage will become.
Clouds, snow, freezing. It’s all here and there’s no rest here, so close to the top. There’s Sestriere up there, they keep going and their gap is just 3 minutes. 3 minutes… It looks like nothing, but for those guys it could make all the difference eventually. Meanwhile, it’s clear that Astana want to make this stage as tough as possible in order to finally put some time into Betancur, Hesjedal and the others.
We see the fog up there, it only gets worse by the minute. Santamorita still has the guts to hunt for glory and has never let the Maglia Azzura get out of his eyesight. Of course, he wants those points up there.
With the tv signal from the Motobikes blocked, we only see the sprint from the helicopter through the clouds. The group really has luck that it’s snowing fully, but the snowdrops show how cold it is up here in this winter resort.
And then, the tv cameras couldn’t get it right, but out of the fog of Sestriere, two men break out. Do you spot them there, how they attack ahead of the KoM sprint? While other guys like Kirby don’t get the names, your trusted Giro reporter Shonak knows it of course immediately: The two riders are Nibali and Pellizotti. There’s a third one, a Sky rider. Initially it’s believed it was Porte, but in fact it was Cataldo, who dropped back though when he noticed that his captain wasn’t with him.
It’s all the excitement we had hoped with the two Italians working together to finally impress their home audience. They have around 30 seconds lead onto the peloton, and then there’s of course the breakaway up ahead, whose 2 minutes away from them. In the peloton most GT contenders have sent helpers up front. It’s currently led by FDJ, of all teams that’s a bit weird.
This is just a too good show right now from both of them. They fly down the descent and work great together, but the peloton is chasing so god damn hard behind them, it’s unlikely that they will make it to the Monte Jafferau with a lead. Still, great riding from both of them! Of course with such a pace behind the BOTD, their lead is vanishing rapidly.
It’s almost all back together with 20 kilometers left. The collective effort brought back the two Italians, and then there’s the breakaway right up there. This is about the Giro as much as it is about the stage win today.
And that’s something the guys up there know too. Gusev starts the attacking, followed by De Greef and Burton, but all their attempts are without the necessary punch at the right gradient. Meanwhile, look how incredible wet and dirty Poels jersey is. Are we at the Ronde van Vlaanderen or what?
Enough names in the peloton still so it’s unnecessary to include or tell you about them, and there’s none of them missing. At least half of the peloton isn't to be seen anymore. With 14 kilometers left to go, the climb will start soon though and the favourites already look out for a good position now, or preferably, want to keep their good position.
The official climb up to Monte Jafferau starts now. This is where it gets steep, 8 kilometers ahead of them. The peloton is right there and the break really can’t play it tactically just yet. Thousand Giro viewers and fans hope for a great finish now.
Eventually, the break may just have been too big, it was too easily caught there. Moving like a tank. But no reason to give up just yet. De Las Campos starts the attacking, followed by Gesink and Niemiec, and Uran can be spotted too!
And the favourites react too! Porte launches, Kiserlovski on the wheel, Betancur to get the drop on Nibali. Kreuziger right there too. No one else followed besides them though.
Tough racing right there now. De Las Campos set himself away from his former companions, and Porte was the only GT contenders to have them instead. Uran and Porte now both in a group, while Kiserlovski and Kreuziger are racing for their general ambitions. Quintana has reacted and is easily catching up to Group Nibali though. No sign of other contenders such as Hesjedal, Evans, Kelderman, Scarponi or Basso.
Gesink dropped under SKY’s pace, while De Las Campos is about to get caught too. Niemiec sits on the wheel and may be the lucky profiteeur of recent developments. Contrary to the SKY riders though, De Las Campos looks “kinda fresh”.
It’s the promised sufferfeast. Nibali has no helpers anymore, they are all gone, and there are just those two Colombians who look to make life the living hell for him now. Poels is the last one of this group so far, Kreuziger is suffering and surprisingly there are two riders of Radioshack in there, Bakelants and Kiserlovski. Good showing by them. Scarponi is close to Group Nibali and it looked like he’d reach them but now he struggles to hang onto Hesjedal’s wheel.
3.5 kilometers and De Las Campos is about to get dropped too now. Double victory for SKY here? They have about 50 seconds onto Group Nibali, where Quintana and Betancur couldn’t break out.
Hesjedal has made the jump into Group Nibali. Unbelieveably though, Poels and Bakelants are still hanging on. 3 kilometers! De las Campos, Niemiec and Gesink are about to get caught.
They are done now, thery are all done for good. Exhausted, beaten. Most of them have their heads to the floor, and if some don't, they soon will sink their heads. They are just trying to get those last breaths into their lungs. Find the rhythm, stay there, keep riding. No regrets though at least for Porte. He has been leading, despite Uran’s presence, most of the way up to Monte Jafferau. And he really made it count. About a minute lead onto Nibali. Porte makes the jump onto the podium today for sure.
Wow, what a performance by Aussie Richie Porte here today. He attacked early at the bottom of the climb and just paced that whole thing up there. Deservedly, he moves up to 3th GC-wise and with only a minute down on Nibali, Porte surely has a shot at the victory too again. After some less convincing stages, where Porte leader abilities could have been questioned, he really stroke back here today. A great win for Team SKY gets rounded off by his teammate Rigoberto Uran who takes second ahead of Niemiec, who finishes third.
There’s some change in the General Classification once more. Quintana failed to get time onto his rivals today but still finished as the first of them, he moves back into Top 10. A jump forward makes also Robert Kiserlovski, who profits from Androni’s tactical disaster today, as Pellizotti lost huge time and fell out of Top 10 contention – maybe for good. At least he went out with his head held high. Evans loses further ground onto the Top 5, but he managed to keep his time loss once again short by making a good comeback on the last kilometers.
This concludes Week 2 for now. Check out soon the summary for it soon here.

"It’s a little bit scary when Contador attacks." - Tommy V
Great report again! I expected Team Sky beaten, but here they are. Quintana is definitely out now, and it'll be very close for Wilco. PS, Gesink is an idiot.

Of course, Lotto dead second-a-last in the teams ranking
Well, certain teams did a very poor selectionin my opinion
Not just you by the way, same for that FDJ didn't send much, Euskaltel wasn't the best either, relying on De las Campos, though the last week has been better. Katusha didn't go for Purito/Moreno/Spilak. And Cannondale didn't send Sagan so little points for them
I was expecting a hard time for Argos as well, without their main sprinters, but they're doing ok'ish.
And this is why I was hoping/dreaming of a GC top 10 from de las Campos before the start...
@Ollfardh: On paper de los Campos is one of our best pure climbers, but was unlucky with a crash early on that ruined his GC. Apart from him boh Gorka's are fairly competent as well and several others are decent break-chaser, which is what we need chasing stage wins. We just haven't brought any sprinters as I felt it would be wasting of racedays considering the kind of sprinters I have

Thats a huge result for us. Uran healed himself and with him played a very good tactic, seeing the stage for a moment i forgot thats a game, this - going to breakaway, then help our leader - tactic was like IRL. Anyway better and better reports stage by stage. Thanks

I've only got 4 real scorers in my team and i have to use them at the Tour with home advantage. Plus i want to relegate, remember?
Well shit.
Why did Pellizotti attack....
Now 50 seconds behind Kelderman he will need a distance breakaway on the next opportunity. At least he tried. I dont see how FDJ caught him and Nibali...

That stage destroyed my whole Giro...
Even if they would have been taking same time as the winner, they would just narrowly be in Top15, so..
Think its up for stage wins, now, huh?
(And a climber next year.)
Great report Shonak - the quality of reports in the first two weeks has been exceptional, this one particularly so - keep it up into the final week
Saxo wise, Kreuziger sticking in there, never quite seems to finish at the front in any of the stages, but nevertheless he's putting in a solid performance and just has to make sure that three-minute buffer he has doesn't get worn down in the last week and then I'll be happy
One thing I have noticed.
My three domestiques- Rosa, Rubiano and Shalunov have finished consistently well in 31st, 32nd and 34th in the GC. As none of them have had much freedom I am quite happy with their efforts and two of them are U25, in fact they are 7th and 8th in the Youth Classification. Not too bad.
But seriously, Pellizotti needs at least 2 minutes on Kelderman going into the ending TT (i'm guessing there is one). And I would have expected Rosa to say with him and pace him forward. Pellizotti used too much energy in that attack considering he is rather old.
