Nice 1-2 with Lighthart and Westra! Up to the Tour de France Grin

5th and last stage with start and finish in Etten-Leur.
img850.imageshack.us/img850/9507/39etappe5.jpg

To make the story short, a breakaway, don't even remember their names, and they get caught in the last part. Of course a mass sprint, and we wanne win this one! So we set up a train, with Posthuma-Westra-Keukeleire-Ligthart. With one km to go, Ligthart takes the lead. On the inside of the corner, comes Gerald Ciolek.

100 metres to go and Ciolek comes next to Ligthart. It's a drag race to the finish and Ligthart gives it all, but his legs start screaming to calm down. Ciolek has more speed....

And it's the 2nd stage win for the German. He was too fast for us.

Word from the DS: What a succesful Ster ZLM Tour for the team! Great ride by Lieuwe Westra who won the GC and the points-ranking, for Pim Ligthart, who got 2nd in the GC, won a stage and the U25-rankings and for Wilco Kelderman who won the KOTM-rankings. And we also won the teams-rankings!! There's one way to celebrate this: bring the champagne!

Our team:
img28.imageshack.us/img28/2632/1ploeg.jpg

Stage 1: From Castres to Samatan, almost flat with a few little climbs.
img43.imageshack.us/img43/2273/1etappe1.jpg

Niki Terpstra is very active in this stage, collecting many KOTM-points. His reward comes at the end of the day, where he can put on that polka dot jersey!
img6.imageshack.us/img6/9499/3terpstra.jpg

But of course, it turns out to be a mass sprint. FDJ's William Bonnet is the fastest and takes the win. Jérome Baugnies (Topsport) in 2nd and Frédéric Amorison in 3rd. Our sprint is disappointing again, with Marcel Kittel in 9th place.

Stage 2 is from Saint Gaudens to Cauteret. A tough stage, in which the riders have to climb the Col D'Aspin and the Col du Tourmalet. Also the last 10km to Cauteret go uphill.
img600.imageshack.us/img600/8856/8etappe2.jpg

We start the day with a crash, unfortunately. Marcel Kittel crashes even before the Col D'Aspin, but can continue his ride. He has to ride a long way alone, but manages to get in without problems with the time limit.
img834.imageshack.us/img834/796/9valkittel.jpg

This is the stage where Andy Schleck wants to test himself for the Tour. He attacks at the ascend of the Tourmalet, with still 10km of climbing and 40km of this stage to go. His gaps increases every kilometre!
img198.imageshack.us/img198/3761/1050km.jpg

Of course, he is the first on the summit of this legendary col.
img708.imageshack.us/img708/9284/11tourmalet.jpg

At 2'30 cross two French climbers the summit: Pierre Rolland (Europcar) and Alexandre Geniez (Skil). Thomas de Gendt follows at 2'55, joined by Sebastien Joly (Saur).
img819.imageshack.us/img819/6656/12achtervolgers.jpg

Schleck descends on a save way, so at the foot of the last climb to Cauterets, Geniez is only 1'00 behind him. De Gendt has joined Rolland, and they follow at 1'30.
img37.imageshack.us/img37/8931/135km.jpg

Andy climbs very, very fast and extends his lead. He can celebrate his victory and knows his form for the Tour is good, a succesful test!
img849.imageshack.us/img849/5808/14finish.jpg

De Gendt saved his legs in the long descend, so in the climb he had some energy left. He drops Rolland and joins Geniez. He outsprints the young French rider, and makes it a double for the team at 3'31.

Today's winner:

Word from the DS: A very good ride by Andy, showing that he's ready for the Tour de France. Thomas de Gendt surprised us by beating the French riders and making it a great double for the team!

Stage 3 from Pierrefitte Nestalas to Bagneres de Luchon, with again 2 cols to be climbed: the Col du Mente and the Port de Bales.
img684.imageshack.us/img684/9571/19etappe3.jpg

This time, Pierre Rolland (GC number 4) gives it a go. We are already on the Port de Bales and he quickly gets a minute. The other French riders react, Geniez, Joly, Peraud, etc. but Andy Schleck stays calm. When the lead of Rolland is about 2 minutes 5km from the summit, Andy accelerates.
img153.imageshack.us/img153/9922/21rolland.jpg

He passes all the other riders, except for Rolland, who is the first on the summit. Andy follows at '25.
img52.imageshack.us/img52/9586/22bales.jpg

It took almost all the descend for Andy to close the gap, and with 1km to go, he's on the wheel of Rolland.
img15.imageshack.us/img15/1905/231km.jpg

The sprint starts and Rolland beats Andy with only a few centimetres. Great ride by the French rider!

$th and last stage, from Izaourt tp Pau, 145km.

Well, I didn't feel like taking a lot of screenshots for the reason that the stage would turn out in a mass sprint. And I was right! We set up a nice train with Rosseler-Vermeltfoort-Kittel, but at the moment the BOTD got caught (7km to go), Rosseler got stuck behind one of them and the train fell way back in the peloton. Sometimes.......... Angry

Anyway, just as in stage 1, William Bonnet (FDJ) won easily. Our train ended in 8-9-10th....

Not really. I think the results are pretty realistic:
- Gesink won the Giro, while he was in top form (95-99), beating Rujano and Contador, who apparantly was not in his best form.
- Schleck got 2nd in the Dauphiné (form 80-85), with not the best opponents.
- Westra (form 95)won the Ster ZLM tour, with only Zabriskie as a strong opponent for the gC.
- Schleck won the Route du Sud. In a form of 90 he should always have won this against riders as Rolland and Geniez.

So no reason yet. I'll play the TdF (coming very shortly!!) on hard. When I win that as well with Schleck, I promise you I'll switch to extreme then!

Running from Saturday July 2rd to Sunday July 24th 2011, the 98th Tour de France will be made up of 21 stages and will cover a total distance of 3,430.5 kilometres. In 2011, the Tour will celebrate the hundredth anniversary of the first crossing of the galibier by the peloton, the mountain pass which has been visited the most by the race. The finishing line of the 18th stage will be marked out there at an altitude of 2,645 metres!

Our team:
img706.imageshack.us/img706/4546/ploeg.jpg

GC:
The favourites:
img571.imageshack.us/img571/6127/1albertocontador.jpg
Alberto Contador won the Tour in 2010. After it, he came into disrepute because of some steak, and a very small amount was found in his blood. Because the verdict was postponed all the time, he's still in doubt whether he can keep his Tour-win. El Pistolero took part in the Giro D'Italia, finishing in a dissapointing 3rd behind Robert Gesink and José Rujano. There is some doubt about his form, since he did not ride the Dauphiné or Tour de Suisse.

img651.imageshack.us/img651/372/2cadelevans.jpg
BMC's Cadel Evans is always a favourite to win the Tour, although he has never won a GT before. He's a good climber and can ride a great TT. The question is if his team is strong enough to help him in the mountains and if he doesn't have his normal weak day in a 3-week race.

img856.imageshack.us/img856/5582/3andyschleck.jpg
Andy Schleck switched teams last winter, joining the new Monster Energy - Ford team. He focusses fully on this Tour, and rode a good Dauphiné in the preparation. The big question is if he can limit his loss in the ITT. If so, than he can go for the maillot jaune.

The favourites for the podium:
img41.imageshack.us/img41/4071/4samuelsanchez.jpg
Euskaltel's Samuel Sanchez had probably the best preparation of all the GC-contenders. He won the Tour de Suisse and looks ready for the Tour. The question remains if his top form was not there too early?

img64.imageshack.us/img64/8461/5ivanbasso.jpg
Ivan Basso rode a bad Giro. His first week was terrible, but his form grew in the last week. After that he took some rest and now he finally wants to win the Tour. Is his ITT still strong enough to do this and will the rivalry with Vincenzo Nibali in the Liquigas-team not harm them?

img97.imageshack.us/img97/7250/6bradleywiggins.jpg
After his 4th place in 2009, Bradley Wiggins wants to make the step to the top 3. Last year was a disaster, being too tired after the Giro. This year he focusses on the Tour, and rode a good Tour de Suisse with one stage win. His ITT is excellent, but can he limit the loss in the mountains?

img825.imageshack.us/img825/6615/7jurgenvandenbroeck.jpg
Belgium GC-hope Jurgen van den Broeck refused an offer from the new Monster Energy-team last winter and stayed with Omega Pharma. He got the chance to focus on the Tour. Is his time trial good enough?

img27.imageshack.us/img27/1743/8frankschleck.jpg
Without his brother, Frank Schleck has a free roll to go for the podium. But it will be hard for him, with his weak time trial.

Outsiders:
img204.imageshack.us/img204/990/9joaquimrodriguez.jpg
Joaquim Rodriguez is one of the best puncheurs in the world and the steeper the climb, the more he loves it. But Purito's time trial is the worst of all the GC-contendors.

img97.imageshack.us/img97/4491/10levileipheimer.gif
Veteran Levi Leipheimer can perform pretty well in all aspects of cycling, but does not excel in one thing. He'd loved to see more timetrial kilometres.

img716.imageshack.us/img716/5640/11vincenzonibali.jpg
The question is if Vincenzo Nibali can ride for his own chances, or if he is a very luxury domestique for Ivan Basso?

img849.imageshack.us/img849/245/12michelescarponi.jpg
Michele Scarponi surprisingly skipped the Giro D'Italia. He has decided to go for the Tour and is a good outsider.

Sprinters
***
img339.imageshack.us/img339/803/13markcavendish.jpg
Mark Cavendish hasn't won many races this year, but the Manx Missile is THE best sprinter in the world.

img191.imageshack.us/img191/2113/14tylerfarrar.jpg
Tyler Farrar has some sprint victories in the Giro in his pocket, also won a stage in the Tour de Suisse and now targets a stage win for the Tour. Something he has never achieved before.

img171.imageshack.us/img171/8778/15andregreipel.jpg
André Greipel, the German Gorilla, left HTC last winter, and wants to beat Cav while riding for his new team Omega Pharma - Lotto.

img585.imageshack.us/img585/9607/16edvaldboassonhagen.jpg
Not the best sprinter, but thanks to his puncheur-skills, is Edvald Boasson Hagen a serious contendor for the green jersey.

**
img192.imageshack.us/img192/5333/17alessandropetacchi.jpg
Alessandro Petacchi is the oldest of the sprinters, but still one of the fastest. He won already stages in the Giro and Tour de Suisse this year, so Ale Jet is a serious contendor for a stage win.

img846.imageshack.us/img846/6637/18oscarfreire.jpg
Oscar Freire has lost his fastest sprint legs, but the triple World champ has the ability to surprise everyone in one stage.

img841.imageshack.us/img841/3161/19jjrojas.jpg
Without a GC-contendor in the team, José Joaquin Rojas knows the Movistar-team will work for him. Is he already good enough for a stage win?

img52.imageshack.us/img52/2254/20romainfeillu.jpg
Vacansoleil's Romain Feillu has got the home-advantage. He doesn't need a sprint train and can surprise when the last kilometres are going up and down, something we'll see a lot in this Tour.

*
img831.imageshack.us/img831/8769/24matthewgoss.jpg
Aussie Matthew Goss is the last man in the sprint train of Mark Cavendish, but knows that he will get his own chance here.

img13.imageshack.us/img13/9814/23tomboonen.jpg
Tom Boonen isn't the fast sprinter as he used to be, but can still surprise. Or at least, he hopes to...

img820.imageshack.us/img820/5527/22samueldumoulin.jpg
Another French sprinter who does not need a train: Samuel Dumoulin. He can get some top 5-results, but a stage win?

img831.imageshack.us/img831/4646/21marcelkittel.jpg
Monster Energy's Marcel Kittel has no pressure this tour. It's his first GT and all he got to do is learn. Then it's no problem if he gets a 3rd one day and a 20th the next day.

Our goals:
That's an easy question: the maillot jaune for Andy Schleck!
