Pellizotti 9th in the GC and he will get beaten by Quintana. He really needs to do something amazing to confirm his Top 10 spot.

Well, I just trust the reporter
The breakaway riders are still upfront but are presumably set to be caught.
It's okay though, just hope Brouwer gets his chances.
Haha, yeah I know I wrote that, but I always write the stuff in "live-ticker" manner so I don't know what happens next and at this point it just looked like a bunch sprint.

No! So close to another stage win, but a team rider 2nd and custom rider 4th. I love it

Stage 13
A decisive stage you may underestimate due to its long flat part throughout the stage. However the length of 240 kilometers makes it tricky and it’s always up from the set-go until the peloton hits the first climb, Diano D’Alba. From there on out, the riders have to take on some non-specified climbs until they fight it out in the finish of Cherasco. Bookmakers like to list the GT contenders as main favourites, however there’s also chance that hilly puncheur/sprinters have great chances today. And of course, with two recent breakaway wins, we can count on them today too.
We know the second one, it’s Eros Capecchi (MOV). Movistar had him once up front when Quintana showed a stellar solo-ride. Will Eros be today allowed to ride for his own gain or will he function as a relais station? De Los Campos from Euskaltel – Euskadi is probably not worrying about that yet but is just trying to get away from the peloton for now. In no regards it has been a good Giro for the young Basque so far, however with a decent performance today he may do the orange wave finally proud. However it goes, Euskaltel has sent their captain as the fifth rider into the break on the fifth consecutive day. In the back, there are Sandy Casar (FDJ) and N. Sörensen (TST). The break’s lead is about 1 minute, fast growing.
Later on, Tom Dumoulin (ARG) and Christian Knees (SKY) join the fun too. It’s 4 minutes by now, they easily gain time on the peloton so far with a strong tailwind.
It’s a whole lot of nothing between then and now, and the break got time on the peloton. However, Astana did increase their chasing effort with 100 kilometers remaining and now it’s still a long way to go, and they have about 5 minutes left. 80 kilometers. If I had to guess, I’d bet my money on a GT as a winner.
There’s nobody around in the break who’d want to contest in the KoM sprint. Dumoulin just takes them while everybody is more interested in keeping the lead as big as possible. Not an easy task, when a team full of decent puncheurs is putting up the effort more and more.
An attack from Gesink near the top of the KoM sprint puts Albasini into a good position. Nordhaug is eager to follow his teammate, while Lampre dares a double move later on with Ulissi and Scarponi. Unfortunately, Astana catches the 7 man try again at its roots, and as they catch them, one man attacks:
It’s Nibali himself. Only two riders are aware of the situation and/or have the legs, Quintana and Scarponi! They get caught again by Saxo-Tinkoff and Cancellara though. In a new attempt, Albasini and Nordhaug then try their luck again. The race is currently a bit stale with the half-hearted breakaway attempts, but this may just be a bit of an intro to what it is yet to come.
Nordhaug leaves Albasini alone and he has about a minute on the peloton by now. Another two minutes and he’ll be in the BOTD. They surely are not eager to have him there, but what can you do when one man has great legs?
It’s hard to get a clear overview of the race in the next climb. There are just too many attacks that lead no where, too many counter-moves, too much waiting around. Eventually, it’s Kreuziger who seems to make the push for it the strongest and there is a bunch of GT contenders following. However, some aren’t up there, like Pellizotti, Basso, Kelderman or Porte.
30 kilometers to go and Evans and Kreuziger are trying hard to take advantage of the situation. Porte, Kelderman and Hesjedal were there behind. But despite their efforts, it’s inevitable that they peloton gets back there. They are a group of 11 though, so they definitely would have had the manpower for a strong race, but it all came down rather fast back together in this downhill. However, Nordhaug is still at large.
Just as Christian Knees and Casar attack out of the breakaway, De kas Campos crashes. Just some typically basque luck, one might think. He falls out of the contention for the stage win now and we hope that he didn’t injure himself here.
Any small hill and slope is being used as a chance to attack. Initially Kreuziger forced a split in the peloton, where Kelderman, Kreuziger and Evans still try to catch up. However Hesjedal is on the offensive and takes another shot.
And yet the last hill and hopefully the last reign of attacks, in a constantly shifting stage that is really hard to hold up to. Basso makes the push here. Favourites missing include Quintana, Pellizotti and Kelderman. However there’s once more no reason to worry as everything comes back together. For the 100th god damn time. Meanwhile, Nordhaug gotcaught too by Group Nibali. However, De Las Campos is still up there, which is incredible since Nordhaug passed De Las Campos while the Basque was one the ground.
The fight for stage win is very much alive. Numerous attacks by Knees didn’t result in much, now with 4 kilometers left, Nicki Sörensen takes charge and is only contested by Dumoulin, while the rest of the break may have not much power left.
There’s Capecchi too now who came flying from behind on his own lane. The others must be surprised because they fail to get his wheel when he rides past them. So he rode for a stage win eventually. It’s going to be one of those three, while Basso split the peloton once more with an attack.
A strong finish sees Capecchi as the winner. He was clearly the one with the strongest legs left and who finished this stage without much attacking but by conserving his energy best on this 240 kilometer long monstrous ride.
However there’s some bad news for the team too. Quintana missed the final split of the peloton, which was caused by Basso, and now rides behind most of his rivals. The peloton of sprinters actually catches him at the line.
Betancur gave his rivals the slip himself and escaped out of their eyes to aim for some valuable bonus seconds, but instead they all get taken the same time. Movistar with a smiling and a crying eye today notice that Quintana loses over a minute on his rivals today. However, it’s not all legit and there has to be some serious debate since Group Nibali gets in fact the time of Christian Knees, who finished 4th and way ahead of them. Something that’s just utterly not right.
As a result of aggressive riding today though, Michele Scarponi moves into the Top 10 on 9th, while Quintana falls back on 12th behind Basso. Kelderman lost quite some time too and Belkin will have to watch out to keep in the Top 10 with Basso and Quintana eager to get in there.

(So yes, you see right. It's the same time from Knees to Nibali, while Quintana and Kelderman get a huge pile of garbage added. This does neither reflect the game nor the race itself. In fact, this was legit AI riding but those time gaps... jeez, hate them. I think it's just lousy stage design. I'm sorry for Ollfardh and knockout, I wish it hadn't done that. There were gaps and those have to be counted, however they were smaller. On a bright side, I'm pretty sure we had to deal with most of the flaws so far, so let's hope we stay free of them in week 3?
Because I'm getting annoyed on this type of bullshit I may make a pause for some days after stage 14. So don't wonder if there are no reports. )

Good to see Cristiano showing himself a bit. too bad with the crash, but I doubt he would have won the sprint anyway

Hmmm, good aggressive riding from the team, but Wilco is really struggling
Interesting read though, keep up the good work!
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

Well Pellizotti finally finishing in the favourites group, even ahead of Nibali, is a much better effort. The Top 10 GC also looking better as well.
@Shonak Please dont stop the reports, we are really enjoying them. They are wellrotten and do not miss any action. The time gaps are hust an annoying PCM thing because I believe that Quintana's time would be X time after Nibali's because Nibali gets the same time as the first in his group so the gap between Nibali and Quintana is actually counted as the time gap between Knees and Quintana.
A silly PCM thing which pisses me off as well. Nothing you can do about it.
Continue with the great reports and please give Pellizotti his Top 10GC

Of course I finish the Giro, I just may take a pause for a few days after stage 14. It's not called Grand Tour for nothing and I want to be fresh and eager for the third week.

About the time gaps, we'll just take it as it is. It can work out in someone's favour, or not. I can imagine it's not enjoyable to report, but well. Not much we can do about it.
Alternativaly, I was thinking of adding points for top 20 GC in the GTs, like I did with the monuments. This might ease the pain of those just falling out od the top 10 due to strange AI?
One more thing: since IAM didn't get to ride in the Giro but had a goal there, it becomes automaticaly achieved as a compensation.
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

What was their goal and difficulty. If stage win then it is fine as they would probably get it. I think Top 15 GC not 20.

Points for Top 20 is a good idea. Grand Tours take up massive race days for any team that participates in them and many don't get a stage win or even particularly good results. Top 20 at least compensates a bit and sets it also apart from normal stage races.

At least Basso finally showed himself. Hopefully he'll be more fresh in the last week than the other riders.
Good effort from De las Campos. Too bad he crashed, otherwise he might have had a shot at a podium place. |
