Thx

Amazing report of De Ronde!! I think this was the maximum result for Veelers, 7th is really great! I think Paris-Roubaix should suit him even better, without the steep hills.

And indeed strange to see Boonen that far behind. Sometimes, the favourites are positioned too far behind when the hills and cobbles start in these classics, and they never get back...

Good luck the next week for Paris-Roubaix, hope you can get a top 5!

Thanks a lot. Positive comments about the reports always feels great. And you were totally right about why Boonen and Gilbert lost time. Exactly that happened. I'll do my best to repeat this kind of result in Roubaix.

I really like all these small groups in the Ronde.

I can just say thanks and agree to what you said.

baia wrote:

Yeah, it was a bit weird. And strangest of all, neither him or Boonen seemed to care and didn't even try to chase back.

Tuco the Ugly wrote:
Great report and even better racing.

Weird that Boonen and Gilbert were so bad. Maybe Gilbert won't dominate the Ardennes like usual...probably not though.

Big thanks for that. Hearing that other great storywriters like the reports is a great motivation for me. And I'm also looking forward to see how Gilbert will do in the Ardennes.

Sorry for the lack of updates, I took a few days off to clear up some schoolwork and other small things. Next report coming up soon.

Antwerpen - Schoten

After endless tries, reboots and graphic lowerings I realised that this race wouldn't work no matter what I do. It kept crashing on the same spot every time, and nothing I did could prevent it. Therefore I unfortunately had to play the race in detailed simulation. I'm really mad, since we had a great chance of victory here.

To our frustration, Kittel was pushed back just before the final sprint kicked off and had to launch from way behind. Therefore Kluge placed best for us here with a nice 5th, while Kittel managed to save a Top 10 spot.

Vacansoleil's Wouter Mol profited from an un-organized sprint and claimed the biggest win of his career, edging out Verandas Willems' James Vanlandschoot and the man he was leading out, Romain Feillu.

Held in the week between the Ronde and Roubaix, Pino Cerami often gets quite heavy startlists. Those who couldn't live up to the expectations in the Ronde gets a chance to find their top form for Roubaix here, and those who did have a successful Ronde might also go here to make sure that their form stays on top. This year's edition is a bit special though, since all the big names has decided to skip racing here. Maybe they feel that their shape is enough anyway?

Skil squad:
i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/pino_2.jpg
With the lack of big names on the startlist here, we decided to send Veelers as absolute leader, for the first time without his two lieutenants DB and Dock. Instead he'll be helped by Curvers, who finally has found his top form and De Kort. Van Zandbeek might also be helpful in the final kilometers, but the other four probably won't be of much use, since they lack experience on the cobbles. Still, we're expecting a good result here.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/pino_1.png
The first half of the race is relatively easy and most likely won't provide any spectacles, but the fireworks are expected to begin once the riders reach the circuit around the finish line in Frameries. The lap includes two major climbs, the cobbled Tienne du Dragon (500m at 14%) and the easier one leading up to the finishing line.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/pino_3.jpg
The decisive move came up the last climb of the Tienne. Curvers managed to sneak around the just caught early escapees and create a gap which none of the others managed to close. Another win for us and a first for Curvers, who got promoted to leader when Veelers wasn't feeling well (-5).

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/pino_4.jpg
The battle for second place was decided in a close sprint between Scheirlinckx and De Waele. Veelers' bad daily form left him unable to challenge in the sprint and barely saved a Top 10 place, while De Kort finished just outside it.

Thanks. I'd happily stay in CT, but with the season we're having so far I think it might be more challenging to promote. But the season isn't over yet. Wink

One week after the Ronde, we have the second of the two cobbled classics, Paris - Roubaix. The "Hell of the North" is possibly even bigger to win for a cobbled specialist, because of it's high status. Historical winners include Fausto Coppi, Eddy Merckx, Roger de Vlaeminck, Magnus Bäckstedt (Pfft) and Tom Boonen.

Real life result:

3Maarten TjallingiiRabobank Cycling Teams.t.
4Grégory RastTeam Radioshacks.t.

7Bernhard EiselHTC - Highroad+ 47
8Thor HushovdTeam Garmin - Cervélos.t.
9Juan Antonio FlechaSky ProCyclings.t.
10Matthew HaymanSky ProCyclings.t.

A group containing a.o. Vansummeren, Rast and Bak broke free just after the Arenberg forest and kept a lead big enough for Vansummeren to go solo in the final to claim his career's biggest victory. Last year's winner Fabian Cancellara was marked by Thor Hushovd and Alessandro Ballan, who both refused to cooperate. When Spartacus finally managed to gap the other favourites it was too late. He crossed 19 seconds behind surprise winner Vansummeren, while all-day escapee Maarten Tjallingii took third with an outstanding performance.

Skil squad:
i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/rbx_2.png
Pretty much the best cobbled squad we can send. Docker is the only one missing, because of his high amount of racedays. Veelers will lead us together with Pino Cerami winner Curvers and dark horse De Backer. De Kort and Van Zandbeek will be luxury domestiques, while Kluge, Timmer and Reimer will try to stay in the peloton for as long as possible.

Favourites:
***** Cancellara
**** Chavanel, Hushovd
*** Boonen, Leukemans, Flecha
** Boom, Eisel, Vansummeren, Nuyens
* Thomas, Langeveld, Breschel, Roelandts, Veelers

Chavanel was by far the strongest in the Ronde, but I think Cancellara could have challenged him if he hadn't wasted so much energy on non-effective attacks. This time Spartacus will prevail because of better tactics than last week.
The God of Thunder, Hushovd will also be a man to watch. He struggled a bit in the much more hilly Ronde, but should be on his best here. No chance for the others if he's in the front group when entering the velodrome.

Maybe you get a similar result than the real one. Wink

Good luck with Veelers. Top20 maybe?

cunego59
Good luck there, hopefully you can repeat your strong performance from De Ronde!

Pellizotti2
@roturn: Yeah, Top 15/20 is the goal, seeing the quite heavy startlist. On the other side, Veelers was 7th in Ronde, so why not Top 10 again? ;)
@cunego: Thanks, I'll do my best! :)

pcmdaily.com/images/flags/FR.png 10.04.2011: Paris - Roubaix

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/rbx_1.png
Much easier than de Ronde profile-wise, but that doesn't mean it's an easier race. The 27 cobbled sections on the route are all very challenging and on very bad cobbles. Bad shape cobbles + forecasted rain = classic Roubaix. Hopefully this will secure us an exciting race. The rain will cause more crashes and punctures, so the favourites will be very nervous. Anyway, let's start the race!

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/rbx_3.jpg
The first hours of the race were really boring. The favourites does of course save their energy for later, but we had at least expected an early breakaway. That didn't happen though, as Sky and Leopard were controlling the race from kilometer one.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/rbx_4.jpg
We finally saw some action, as the pace created some serious splits on one of the harder sections. A group of 20, including Veelers and Curvers were on the right side of it, while the rest of the field were splitted into lots of smaller groups. Most notable missings were once again Boonen, Leukemans, Hincapie and Nuyens.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/rbx_5.jpg
Fortunately for them, the pace dropped significally and the two first groups became one. When we reached the Carrefour de l'Arbre we finally got a serious attack. Not just "an attack" either - Cancellara!

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/rbx_6.jpg
Nobody jumped with Canch, but a few kilometer later Flecha took the responsibility to close the gap. Chavanel, Boom and Hushovd also joined this new offensive.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/rbx_7.jpg
Those five started cooperating and became a big threat. Boonen felt the pressure rising on his shoulders and was forced to attack. He formed a three-man chasing group together with Thomas and Langeveld. But they were not able to fully make the junction!

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/rbx_8.jpg
Another kick from Boom saw him, Cancellara and Hushovd leaving Flecha and Chavanel behind. Cancellara and Hushovd both refused to pass Boom and the Dutchman was therefore forced to lead when they entered the velodrome.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/rbx_9.jpg
A moment of distraction from Cancellara was perfectly used by Hushovd to open up the sprint. Boom had nothing to respond with and Cancellara was now forced to close the gap Hushovd gained.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/rbx_10.jpg
Unsurprisingly, Hushovd's gap was way too big for Cancellara to close and the God of Thunder had plenty of time to celebrate as he finally managed to win the race he so often targeted. Cancellara crossed the line with his head down a few metres behind, while Chavanel came back and outsprinted Boom for third.
Boonen's group almost caught the leaders in the end with Geraint Thomas winning the sprint for 5th. Veelers entered the velodrome in a bad position and did his best to sprint into the Top 10. He finished 11th. :|

117 riders abandoned this rainy edition of Paris-Roubaix, leaving only 81 brave finishers. Kudos to them.

11th is a very good result, kudos for that Wink

roturn
Totally agree with cunego59. RVV is easier for weaker cobblers than PR. So a 11th on extreme with a cobbler like Veelers is extremely well played.

Pellizotti2
Thanks both. I appreciate it a lot. Smile

fuoridibici.files.wordpress.com/2011/04/appennino.jpg

The end of Paris-Roubaix means that the cobbled season is basically over. We're now moving to the next category of races - hills. To test our punchers, we've now gone to Italy and the Giro dell'Appennino. With lots of Italian punchers ready to do anything to pick up a win at home soil, we see this as a perfect place to see how our riders do against stronger competition.

Skil squad:
i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/gda_2.png
Daily form will decide who gets to lead us here. Sprick and Huguet will both be protected, while the still not in perfect shape Fröhlinger will hide a bit and go for a surprise. The rest of the team is either not in such a good shape or not fitted for this terrain.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/gda_1.png
Not very hilly to be a hilly classic. The climbs on the route are actually more mountainous, but with lots of flat parts it's not hard enough to be called a mountain-classic. The big climb in the second half of the race might be crucial, seeing it's the best chance to create some selection. It'll also be interesting to see how hard the uphill final kilometer actually is.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/gda_3.jpg
The route's big climb did as expected destroy the peloton completely. Some strong attacks finally formed a leading group of 14, with Sprick being our only rider in the group.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/gda_4.jpg
The uphill sprint proved to be much harder than expected, and Sprick wasn't able to match the acceleration of Di Luca, who just held off Capecchi in a close finish. Efimkin, Pietropolli and Menchov also beated Sprick, but a 6th place on the same time as Di Luca isn't bad, considering the fact that a big part of the group was distanced in the end.

81 riders finishing P-R.. I like Smile Very well race by Veelers! You missed a Top-10, but an 11th place in this epic race, that's great! Nice win for Thor, too.
