@ baia: I know what you meant, I was just posing another question
@ FreitasPCM: Agreed, I'm not on random potential, so the career won't get too crazy, but I quite enjoy the crazy results/transfers/etc PCM produces. That being said, Gerrans has developed into a really strong rider. 80 HI.
@ sutty68: Sky will be pleased.
@ Avin Wargunnson: I'm glad I could oblige. All things being equal, Cavendish did pretty well to grab 15th. It was not a day for the sprinters.
Arezzo - Terranuova: 196.0km
With only around two weeks left in the season, another good year of racing is winding down. Riders scramble for their last opportunities to prove themselves on the road, hoping to secure a contract and spot on a team next year.
The major feature today is the Passo della Consuma, 18.7km @ 6.2%. Its location does not make it ideal for any major attacks, and any fast man who gets over the top will have a chance.

The day was fairly tame in the early stages. Several lackluster attempts to form a breakaway were all pulled back.
The peloton hit the base of the climb hard. Immediately, the riders were stretched out.
The Passo della Consuma.
On the climb, four riders emerged from the peloton. They were Arkaitz Durán and Marco Corti (Geox - TMC), Przemyslaw Niemec (Lampre - ISD), and Alessandro Bisolti (Farnese Vini - Neri Sottoli).
Four riders escape.
This was quite a dangerous group of climbers, headlined by Niemec. Still, with half the race to go after the ascent, the peloton let them go.
The descent from the summit was very technical, and the roads were quite narrow. This fact enabled the breakaway to gain even more time.
The peloton makes a nervy descent.
With 20km remaining, the four leaders had been whittled down to 2. Corti had been dropped and was in no-mans land, while Bisolti was back in the chasing peloton. Niemec and Durán held a lead of 1'40.
The chase efforts in the peloton disintegrated when a number of favorites attacked. Off were Daniele Callegarin (Team Type 1), Ángel Vicioso (Androni Giocattoli), and Peter Sagan (Liquigas - Cannondale), among others.
Colnago were caught out by this move, at the time thinking about bringing Sacha Modolo, who had survived the climb well, to the front for a sprint.
Marco Frapporti knew he had to try to bridge the gap the small chase group.
Frapporti is off, a little late.
Frapporti was able to make the connection with the group.
However, just up the road, Niemec and Durán were fighting hard and digging deep.
The leading two won't be caught.
In the cat and mouse game of a two-man sprint, Niemec was better positioned, on the wheel of his Basque companion. However, Durán showed immense poise and strength, holding off the Pole to grab the win.
25 seconds later, Callegarin led in the chase group of 7; Frapporti got 5th overall. Modolo came in 11th, 2nd in the peloton, 1'08 after Durán's time.
Durán completes a great ride in style.

Very nice result. Just a shame the break just held on, but I still think that Frapporti will win a race before the season is over. Hurry up now Marco!

@ Spilak23 and Pellizotti2: Thanks. I'll keep trying with Marco to make the breakthrough!
The Race of the Falling Leaves Lies Ahead
Just after the Giro di Toscana, Colnago headquarters received the excellent news that the team was given a wildcard entry for the Giro di Lombardia. After missing out on Tirreno - Adriatcio and Milan - San Remo, the team has been included in Italy's biggest races. The unofficial end to the road season (sorry Japan Cup), the climber's classic is the last Monument on the schedule. Only a rider who has been targeting the day and saving energy will perform here.
Colnago plans to bring Domenico Pozzovivo and Marco Frapporti to the start line in Milano. Frapporti has been enjoying a rich vein of form, racking up numerous Top 10s in the semi-classics held around Italy during the August and September months. Pozzovivo has never fared too well in the race, but the change in parcours could help him.
Colnago is excited to close their season in Lombardy.

@ baia: We'll have to see...
@ sutty68: All the teams ahead have won a lot more races, but I'm happy with the team's performance.
Cesena - Cesenatico: 190.3km
Today, Emilia-Romagna remembers one of their fallen hero's, 1998 Giro-Tour winner, Il Pirata, Marco Pantani. Organized after his tragic death in 2004, much of the Italian peloton gathers to race from his birthplace, Cesena, to his boyhood town, Cesenatico. While the day commemorates a sad passing, the riders will look to honor it with entertaining, attacking riding.

As so, the early kilometers were fast and hard. Multiple attempts to form a breakaway failed. It wasn't until 60km into the day that three riders got away. One of them was the dangerous Alexander Efimkin (Team Type 1).
Three break riders.
Per usual, they were allowed to build up a solid lead before the peloton organized a chase. When the break's lead hit 6 minutes, Liquigas and Miche sent men to the front.
Liquigas and Miche controlled the race.
The chase was hard, as several riders had bridged to the breakaway, increasing its strength. Nonetheless, they could not hold off the peloton, and were brought back fairly early, with 24km left.
The peloton was still rather large heading into the final parts of the day. However, a sharp increase in pace over the penultimate climb split the lead group. The four Colnago riders in the group, Domenico Pozzovivo, Marco Frapporti, Sacha Modolo, and Federico Canuti were all dislodged!
Colnago finds themselves on the wrong end of the split.
Mysteriously, the front end did not press this advantage. No team leaders were left behind, so the slowing of the pace at the front of the race was surprising. Whatever the reason, it allowed the Colnago riders to get back into the lead group.
The group neared the final climb up to the line. As they hit the climb, it was Constantino Zaballa (Miche - Guerciotti) and Peter Sagan (Liquigas - Cannondale) at the front. Unexpectedly, Canuti was the best placed Colnago rider, feeling the freshest. He was behind Zaballa, flanked by René Mandri (Endura Racing).
The riders tackle the final challenge.
Canuti and the rest tried hard, but no one could reach Zaballa and Sagan up the road. The gradient was too hard and those two would duke it out for the win. Still, Canuti finished well, finishing in 4th.
For the win, it was the Spaniard Zaballa who was the strongest in the end. The veteran became the first non-Italian to win the race and is quickly forming a powerful partnership with teammate Davide Rebellin in the late season classics.
Zaballa celebrates his win.

@ sutty68: Sagan's been just short a couple of times this fall. I'd imagine he has high fatigue. That being said, Zaballa has a decent sprint to him.
Peccioli - Peccioli: 190.3km
The domestic peloton moves to Peccioli, in Pisa, for the next hilly classic on the calendar. The Coppa Sabatini is not the most challenging race, but the final drag up to the line is very steep. A similar race to the Memorial Marco Pantani is expected.

The day started with 8 riders forming a breakaway. Colnago had sent riders into the early attacks, but every time their groups were pulled back. Therefore, the team decided to focus on their leaders in the peloton instead.
The breakaway, sans Colnago.
3 more riders jumped across around the midway point of the race. When they bridged the gap, the lead group's size was up to 11. They continued to push on unopposed.
The break riding strongly.
The peloton was late organizing a chase. The lead of the break was beginning to grow to a dangerous amount. Colnago took up the responsibility of leading the charge.
Colnago move to the front.
Angelo Pagani and Alberto Contoli did the early work. Still, with 50km to go, the break was 6'48 ahead.
As they began to tire, Gianluca Brambilla, Manuele Caddeo, and Federico Canuti reinforced. They were riding very hard, but the break's lead with 25km to go was still 3'01; it was going to be close.
At 10km to go, the Colnago domestiques were exhausted. But the break was still away. In a risky move, Domenico Pozzovivo went to the head of the race to do the final pulling.
The pint-sized climber tore up the penultimate climb, bringing the break back, as well as stringing out the entire field.
With Pozzovivo having worked so hard, the responsibility fell squarely on the shoulder's of Marco Frapporti. With the help of sprinter Sacha Modolo, he was guided up to the front of the peloton just before the final ascent.
As the riders hit the climb, he was in pole position, two bike lengths ahead of the field.
Frapporti is in great position for the finale.
Behind Frapporti, Peter Sagan (Liquigas - Cannondale), Damiano Cunego (Lampre - ISD), and Davide Rebellin (Miche - Guerciotti) were desperately trying to close down the gap.
Frapporti dug deep and kept his pace up the steepest section. When he hit the false flat just before the line, he kicked it into another gear, leaving everyone in his dust!
Frapporti is ecstatic with his win.
For over a month, a win has been coming for the up and coming Frapporti, and finally, in the Coppa Sabatini, his form and efforts have been rewarded with a win, the first of his season.
Frapporti becomes the third Colnago rider to win a race.
A great result for the team, it was a true team effort, with every rider contributing to the win. Frapporti bought a bottle of bubbly and shared it with his teammates.
