Valverde was clearly the strongest rider so far and today's route seems again to suit him perfectly. The yellow jersey wearer, Fedrigo is 131 kilometers away from the most important win of his career, but are the 50 seconds he gained so far enough to keep Valverde behind him?
There were quite a lot of riders that managed to get away from the pack in different places of the stage. Arvesen, Mollema and Van Garderen were the biggest names that went in the breakaway. It was Benitez who got the most KoM points today, but he missed 5 to take the polka dot jersey from Ballan, who won the King of the Mountains competition. All the escapes were caught before Col d'Eze, where Joly, Wiggins and Fedrigo made the first moves in the pack
Moncoutie, Chavanel, Contador, Armstrong, Gerdemann, Le Mevel, Moreno, Anton and Vande Velde were some of the riders that tried to follow them. But neither of those proved strong enough to make a gap. It was Valverde who got away and passed the summit of Col d'Eze in a solo lead
4 French riders, Joly, Fedrigo, Chavanel and Moncoutie were leading the chasing group, where Wiggins, Contador, Le Mevel, Armstrong, Vande Velde, Anton were also there
Wiggins was in the wheel of the French group at the end of the climb, but his downhill skills didn't help him today, where he lost the contact with the chasing group. Fedrigo was caught in the same trap and brought back with
Wiggins in a second chasing group, lead by Contador and Armstrong
Joly, Chavanel and Moncoutie were the only ones that could have caught Valverde, but the Spaniard was faster than them on the downhill always keeping an advantage of at least 30 seconds
Joly and Chavanel came really close in the final kilometers of the stage, on the flat section, while Moncoutie lost the contact with them because of the strong wind. But it was too late to catch Valverde, who got his second stage win in this edition of the Paris - Nice
Fedrigo finished in the second chasing group, lead by Contador to the finish line but it seems that he had lost the race...
Yes, Fedrigo lost too much time and the winner of this year's Paris - Nice is Alejandro Valverde! He was followed by 5 French riders, in what was an amazing result for the French cycling: Fedrigo, Chavanel, Joly, Moncoutie and Le Mevel. With today's good performance, when he finished 11th, Wiggins managed to get into the top 20, finishing Paris - Nice 2010 on the 17th position

Exciting finish to the Paris - Nice. Valverde always seems to win it, though. Good realism with Chavanel, he always does well in PN in reality.
Keep on writing! |

Today's stage seems to be made for Cancellara. De La Fuente has less than 1 minute in front of him in the overall rankings and it will be almost impossible to keep the leader's jersey. For us Hagen, Lovkvist and Flecha should shine today, with the last 2 also going for a high place in the general classification
Hagen was one of the early leaders of the stage and he came with quite a strong time. The first rider that managed to beat his time was his team - mate, Thomas Lovkvist, who took the lead for 13 seconds
At the second check point, Cancellara was clearly in front of Lovkvist and Hagen. But on the last ascent he lost more than 1 minute to the Sky riders. Still it was enough for him to take the lead even though it was only for one second in front of Lovkvist!
Devolvder didn't shine today, losing almost one minute to Cancellara, but he will most likely be on the overall podium at the end of the day
Flecha finished only 17th today, being our 4th best rider, Lovkvist, Hagen and even Cioni were faster than him. With this performance he will still hang on in the top 5 overall
De La Fuente lost more than 3 minutes today to Cancellara, finishing 61st. He lost the leader's jersey but still this is looking like a great race for him with a stage win and with a 6th place in the general classification

Looking at today's profile it seems to be the hardest stage of this year's Tirreno - Adriatico. Cunego and Gesink are the main favorites to take the stage win, while Lovkvist has the last chance to get some time on Cancellara
Riders like Rast, Grivko, Bozic, Tonti and Bak were today in the breakaway. But it was Schroder who got the most KoM points and took the lead in the King of the Mountains rankings from De La Fuente. Even with riders like that present in the front group, the escapes were almost all caught at the foot of the last categorized climb of the day, which is also the most difficult from the whole race
Halfway through the top, the race leader, Fabian Cancellara, found himself in trouble and he was caught in gruppeto after losing the contact with the pack
Fifth in the general classification, Flecha, wasn't doing to well either being even in a worse position than Cancellara. Stijn Devolder, third overall, was also in trouble, struggling to keep it up with the pack. From the GC top 5 only Lovkvist and Gilbert didn't have any kind of troubles following the strongest climbers in the pack
In front, Codol tried his chance with an early attack on the climb and managed to get a maximum advantage over the pack of 2 and a half minutes. At the summit he was 2 minutes in front of the pack
But he had no chance on the downhill in front of the pack, lead perfectly by Boasson Hagen, Menchov and Simoni. He was caught on the flat section before the last ascents of the day
When the front group reached the final slopes of the stage, Cunego and Gesink made their moves. Lovkvist, De La Fuente and Bertagnolli followed them
But only the first 2 were strong enough to join them in front. Cunego, Gesink, Lovkvist and De La Fuente entered the last 5 kilometers of the stage in the lead
Neither of them was able to make a gap and it all came down to a sprint in 4, where Cunego was definitely the big favorite...
Cunego had no problems taking even a small gap between him and the other 3. But because of his poor performances in the previous stages he probably won't even get a place on the overall podium
De La Fuente won the sprint for the 2nd place, while Gesink took the last spot on the podium. Lovkvist finished only 4th, but with Cancellara 7 minutes back he will most likely become the new leader of the race

The last stage of Tirreno - Adriatico is a stage made for sprinters where Cavendish is the big favorite to take an another stage win. But with the recently shape showed in the TT, Boasson Hagen might also be a candidate to take the win today
Unfortunately the game crashed after the stage ended so I have only one picture from this stage, with Hagen celebrating the win. Our train made by Flecha, Vigano and Hagen dominated the sprint, the only riders able to keep it up with us being the back up train from Columbia, with Eisel and Renshaw, while Cavendish and Greipel were stuck behind
Thomas Lovkvist finished in the pack and took a very important win for Team Sky. Lovet is the 2010 winner of Tirreno - Adriatico! Also with today's win, Boasson Hagen passed both Flecha and Cavendish in the points classification, to take the prize home

Thanks. I wasn't really expecting Lovkvist too perform that well but I guess that the +90 fitness and some bad crashes from the other favorites helped him.
