It's not like few guys didn't try. Good played by Garmin, as they sent Acevedo in attack which exhausted Wiggins for the finish.
I counted 3 attacks.
If the energy was there, with 15 or so riders in that group... A lot more time could have been gained.

Brilliant riding by Lawson Craddock here! Love seeing young Americans actually getting chances on WT teams in their home race. *cough* *cough*
Nice job by Dennis. yates might have gotten bit too cocky there after Turkey, went too early and got swamped (By 3 riders but still)
Wiggo went full Skytard mode on the final climb. Like I literally could see a power meter erupting from the middle of his face.
Overall boring MTF. Are there any others int he race? Baldy?

Wasn't very interesting indeed. That's the stupid tactic from Sky, that they always ride such a high pace and nobody can attack. Final 200 meters were interesting, but that's it. Nice to see Dennis winning, although I didn't expect that.

The second MTF doesn't look all that steep either

Big thanks to jdog for making this AMAZING userbar!

Since the gradient wasn't too steep till the final few hundred meters, Wiggins tactic was ideal given that he was strong enough to produce that sort of speed. I believe nobody would've gained much on attacking him, since that would only result in a gradual reduction of the gap (like what happened with Acevedo). Everyone just saved themselves for the end because that was the only part where Wiggo could really be beaten due to the high gradient, which despite being irritatingly boring, makes perfect sense.
In the end this was the most expected outcome I guess. I just didn't think the name of the winner would be Rohan Dennis

And once again, I feel asleep without mercy. I can't believe I was actually looking forward to that stage. Proper racing, yes, of course. Then again, those nighttime cycling vids really arn't meant for me.
Surprised by the winner, seems like Machado didn't really do anything. Craddock on quite a great third place.

I somehow managed to miss it but from what I know of the climb it's pretty much a steady 5% up until the last few hundred metres which kick up. Perfect to TT up until the steep bit where it sounds like Wiggins predictably lost some time. Without having seen it, I imagine most were being pushed by Wiggins on the long diesel section then can only pull out limited time on the steeper gradient at the death?
Still some pretty decent in roads for Dennis with the time bonus though.

So the other teams would help Garmin win the race? not going to happen. |

It was the mountain not the team. Why I as pissed about no Blady this year. |

Great to see Rohan Dennis do so well.
Damien Howson is in 12th place on GC. Mega effort on the climb today. |

What makes you think that attacking Wiggins is just going to directly support Garmin in winning the race?

Dennis really improved over the last 2-3 years. A good time trialist with better climbing skills now. Solid rider in races and fields like this. Also Machado having a really nice season with lots of podiums even though the big win is still missing.
And always good to see Craddock being strong in the US races. Great talent. |

wrong, Mount Baldy is actually easier as it's just a constant acention, Diablo has high percentages for over 5 kms at the end
Wiggins would have beaten everyone on Baldy because he would have lost leess energy while reeling in every one
The elevation on Baldy is higher though

Watch the previous finishes on Baldy and I don't think Wiggins would've won easily there. Guys that won there last times are Horner and Gesink. Actual climbers, not so much TT/tempo wiggo's.
Anyway, I fell asleep during yesterdays stage ops: |

Still want Machado to win as I dislike Wiggins.
And nice to see a Kiwi, Bennett, not doing too badly.

That's his problem, he's just too passive, lacks more initiative to attack. |

He's too much of a grinder, you're right. I wish he'd attack; he has the legs surely. Unless, of course, he is actually out of shape.
