Giro d'Italia 2014 Stage 02
Belfast - Belfast 219 KM - Flat
Stage Map
Profile
Last km
Stage two also begins and finishes in Belfast, but not before heading north and returning via the east coast.
Powerful crosswinds from the Irish Sea could cause splits and echelons, but in all likelihood this will end in a bunch sprint.
The two climbs of the day — Cushendall Road and Knocknagulliagh, at 92km and 24km from the finish respectively — will determine who dons the mountains jersey first, though the ‘hills’ jersey would be more apt a name given their size.
The sprinters have the added incentive of gaining time bonuses at the finish line, which, if their team time trials from the previous day were fast enough, could propel them into the iconic pink jersey.
So who is going to be?
Marcel Kittel, Elia Viviani or Nacer Bouhanni |

Garmin and BB could do with something to brighten their morale after today's crash in the TTT. So if tides of fate are feeling generous after Stage One it would be kind of fitting if Farrar did win Stage Two for Garmin.
Honestly though if Marcel Kittel and the Giant-Shimano train are in any sort of form they should romp home. You know what they say about betting on favourites and sure things though .

And I thought the worst thing that would happen to Canadian sports today would be losing in hockey (to FRANCE of all teams). Yep, this was worse. I didn't exactly have high hopes for Hesjedal, but I wanted at least to at least cheer for him being a GC contender (if only for a little while)
A Canadian in Pink, lets not forget about that

I reckon Slagter brought some training methods across to Garmin from Belkin
I have more logical explanation. Martin just learned a lot from Vande Velde from all of those years when they were riding together.
The amount of important races that have been ruined for Garmin by crashes and mechanical failures in recent years is just absurdly huge and I struggle to think of any other team that even came close to that:
- Martin's crash Giro 2014
- Talansky mechanical on the last climb of the mountain stage of Romandie 2014.
- Martin's crash at last turn in LBL 2014.
- Slagter's mechanical on stage 5 of Paris-Nice, he had a good shot of winning overall.
- Farrar's crash at Gent-Wevelgem 2014.
- Martin's crash at Vuelta 2013 (I don't even count Lombardia because he only lost 1 place there, so not a big loss)
- Van Summeren's mechanical on the crucial part of Paris-Roubaix 2013.
- Hesjedal getting ill at Giro, then crashing at Tour de Suisse and then again at Tour de France, ruining the whole 2013 season for him.
- Vande Velde retired from his last Tour de France (2013). Danielson also got involved in crash and is not fully fit for the rest of the race. Talansky got mechanical on one of the stages and lost some time.
Add some endless crashes from VdV from previous years and I could mention some even more. And that only counts key riders that had a shot for a good position in important races.
That's just too much to resist for a fan. It really sucks to be a Garmin's fan nowadays. I would rather see them being invisible in most of the races than seing potential wasted and wasted again and again in so many races.
I'm struggling with depression and the thing that used to give me something to look forward to now is just making me more and more frustrated instead. |

As a fan of a certain team that tends to crash a lot, ouch for Martin fans.
For tomorrow, Kittel. But, for my fantasy team's sake I hope Viviani.

Viviani. Behind, Kittel crashes, and subsequently throws his bike at a unsuspecting Farrar, who will have to abandon.

I would hope not. He was going to the Vuelta anyway. Better just to focus on that now and maybe go to Pologne and stuff in my opinion.
He'll face some fresh competition

You mean Majka will win the GC? Mmm...
If Quintana and Purito get in trouble, maybe. Otherwise I don't think so.

Did they show Martin's crash on camera by the way? Because I watched German Eurosport's "summary" last night and after the advertisement, all I got to see was Martin on the floor.
Horrible for Martin. Roche and him have been looking forward to this since its announcement and now those irish days are just gone for him. However, he really has to learn his bike handling for the future. His two big season goals have been destroyed by them.

Thanks. Crash looked awful. Bet 2 Dollars on Farrar now, all that bad luck needs some compensation.

VERY hard to look past Kittle for the win today, even if the gods should favour a Farrar win (Weylandt memorial, Garmin crashing yesterday) |
