The American Powerhouse Anthony Bush, kick of the season with his first ever overall win in the Tour Down Under. He is the 24th winner in as many seasons, meaning Stuart O'Gradys record of 2 wins still stands. Bush would later go on to win Milan-Sanremo yet again only to see his dominance in the Giro being matched by German sprinter/cobbled specialist Joris Mittermeier. Bush was for a long time thought to be the next Tyler Farrar, but even though he has had a great career sofar his isn't anywhere near Farrars palmares in neither Sanremo nor in the Giro.
Last year gave us some surprising wins, but that was not to be the case this time. Major names like Paradis, Holland, Lambrecht and Roth continued their dominance in the early part of the season. Xavier Paradis took the win in Pais Vasco for a second time in a row and Australian wonderboy Sam Davies showed that last years Roubaix-win was not a fluke by conquering the dreaded cobbles for a second time in 2 years.
Two riders who has a bit of an upset this season after a dissapointing show last year was Tadgh Holland and Kilian Heregger. Holland who didn't have a single major victory after last year came out triumphant in Amstel Gold Race showing he still had some "oompf" left. Austrian Kilian Heregger took his 2nd straight win in Vattenfall Cycloclassics, thereby increasing his overall record to 4 wins.
In GT-news, Moises Aguila made it clear early on that he would go for the Tour yet again and only race the Giro aswell. Even though he was 35 years of age, the oldest one among the favourites, he was still seen as a major contender. It came as a bit of a surprise when he eventually made it to Milan finishing in 17th place, 45 minutes behing 3-time winner Alessio Lella. On a side-note; we've been used to seeing 4-5 Italians in the Top 10 in the Giro now, but who would have expected them to get 8 in the Top 10? Not only that, Italian riders took with them all the other three jerseys too. It should be noted that the Giro has seen a weaker and weaker starting line-up in the last years because more and more riders are focusing solely on the Tour de France, it would seem.
Unlike the Giro, the Tour featured a much more mixed result. With 8 different nations in the top 10 it has become something a spectacle. To the surprise of many 4-time winner Kupiainen didn't win it again, that honour went to Cas Pronk. Will Kupiainen be able to get his 5th win and be on the same level as Merckx and Hinault? Time will tell, but he is getting older and more and more youngsters are coming from behind.
One who won't be winning the Tour anytime soon is Moises Aguila. Despite racing a "relaxed" Giro and focusing solely on the Tour he only finished 12th. This despite being one of the best climbers in peloton. Now soon to reach 37, it would seem he has given up all interest in the Vuelta, a race which he has won 3 times and is the joint record-holder of. 2 wins in the Giro and 3 in the Vuelta, but his fixation with the Tour seems to dominate everything. The one race he can't win. (Remind you of anyone? Seriously, I'm asking.)

Pinot never won anything. Aguila dominated the Giro and Vuelta for several years (took the double twice) aswell as several Point- and KOM-jerseys. In the Tour though; nothing.
Something I didn't mention in my summary was the fact that french sprinter Arnaud Augereau retired at the age of 39. The man from Guadaloupe exelled in both sprints and cobbles.
Here are some of his results:
Giro d'Italia:
- 4 point jerseys
- 18 stage wins
Tour de France:
- 4 point jerseys
- 19 stage wins
- 1 KoM-jersey
Vuelta A Espana:
- 5 stage wins
- 1 point jersey
- 2 wins in Vattenfall
- 2 wins in Milan-Sanremo
- 1 overall win in Tour Down Under
- 11 stage wins in Dauphine Libere
- 9 stage wins + 2 point jerseys in Paris Nice
- 6 top-ten finishes in Paris-Roubaix
+ an insane number of stage wins in other WT-races aswell as PT-races. His last win was his 5th stage win in the Vuelta, he was 39 years old.

Xavier Paradis has to be the coolest name in the peloton of all time.
Amazing that you've managed to go this far in your career. I'm very impressed.

This tear started great for the Australians who could finally see an Australian rider winning the Tour Down Under. The unknown rider Fergus Knight was able to come first on home soil, but the news were quickly overshadowed by and announcment that many had been waiting for; the retirement of the Spaniard Moises Aguila. After several dismall seasons were he failed spectaculary in winning the Tour he would go on to sign for a team in the Continental Tour. The 2-time Giro winner and 3 time Vuelta winner leaves a big legacy, but might be best known for never coming close to the Tour.
As the season progressed we saw many well established riders dominate. The Belgian Hugo Lambrecht continues his dominance in the cobbled races whilst Xabier Paradis took yet another win in the week-long stage races. The only surprise in a flurry of famous names was Iain Hazlewood from Australia. Having no major results to his name he came from nowhere and won Milan-Sanremo, beating Lambrecht and Heregger in the sprint.
The usuall suspects gave us quite a show in the Giro d'Italia. Many expected Alessio Lella to take yet another pink jersey, but it was not to be this time. Graziano Caracciolo narrowly edged him out by a margin of just 31 seconds, one of the closest results we've had in years. Some have wondered if Lella could be able to win 5 Giros, thereby equalling Merckx, Coppi and Binda. However, with new riders approaching fast, Lellas days might be numbered.
For the last 3-4 years, the Tour de France has mainly been a contest between two riders; Aleksander Kupiainen and Cas Pronk. Last year Pronk surprised many by finally breaking Kupiainen in the mountains. This year, though, the Finn was determined to make sure it didn't happen again. Sure enough, the contest consisted more or less only of them with the other riders forced to fight for the last podium place. Showing himself as perhaps the best climber there is at the moment, Kupiaien came through and won the Tour allmost 3 minutes ahead of Pronk. This was his 5th win in the Tour, thus putting himself up there amongst legends such as Merckx, Hinault and Indurain.
If the early part of the season was without many surprises that is not to be said for the autumn. This year we saw several surprising winners such as Trym Røed, Izan Armendia and Jimmy Sour. The Vuelta saw the long-awaited win of Loik Champagne. Having been seen by many as one of the best srage racers in the world, he hasn't had much to show for so far in his career. That is especially clear when you compare him to his countryman Xavier Paradis. The two became professional at the same time and it was expected that Canada would dominate cycling. Apperantly, that was not be.

It had been a long wait, but good things come to those who wait. After having spent the last 4 seasons without a contract, Benoit Colbach was back again after a very long break from the world of professional cycling. Having shot on to the scene like a rocket several years ago, the young...eh... Luxemburger(?) couldn't handle his newfound stardom and had to withdraw from the spotlight. The early retirement came as a shock and many thought that was it. However, now he was back, but could he at the age of 32 find his previous level of success? Yes, he could!
Four names dominated the pre-Giro part of the season with Pronk, Paradis, Lambrecht and San Domingo sharig the victories betwen them. But in a year that saw several great achievements such as Lambrechts 3rd Gent-Wevelgem aswell as winning back-to-back in Roubaix and Sanremo, what will be remembered is the stunning comback of Colbach. In his first professional season in 4 years he started of with a 3rd place in Milan-Sanremo and went on to win Pais Vasco, Liege-Bastogne-Liege (thereby cheating Paradis out of his hatrick) and Classica san Sebastian for a 3rd time. Amazingly enough, he even snagged the points-jersey in the Vuelta and picked up a stage win. One can only imagine what would have happend had this phenomenal rider not given in to the pressure, but rather kept riding...
Many where expecting a fantastic duell between Lella and Caracciolo for the Pink jersey. Last year Caracciolo snatched it infront of Lella by a margin of only 31 seconds, but Alessio wanted his 4th win. Sadly we missed out on what would have been a memorable fight as Lella went down in a mass crash on stage 4 and was forced to abandon. Caracciolo had a walk in the park for the next two weeks; he took the jersey on stage 7 and held it untill the end.
We where also cheated out of another fight for the history books in the Tour de France. We have grown used to seeing Kupiainen and Pronk fight it out in the mountains and it is always a highlight. Sadly, Pronk went down in Tour du Suisse and was diagnosed with a broken arm. This ruined his entire season and it was the last race he participated in that year. Without his closest rival Kupiainen didn't have any problems and toyed with the competitors to take his 6th overall win in France. This puts him behind just Lance Armstrong who's record of 7 wins still stands.
The Vuelta also saw a familiar face with Luis Filipe Gois taking his 2nd Vuelta. The biggest surprise though was the Swede Pontus Lindberg who came 2nd, improving on his 6th place from 2035. Kenyan rider George King'atua was also a minor shock, but it should be said that he has had 4 GC-finishes within the top 17. This was his first appearance in the Top 10.
