Our team:
i1222.photobucket.com/albums/dd485/spilak25/slovenie2.jpg

The Tour de Slovénie is a 4 day stage race in Slovénie. 2 hilly, one mountain and one flat stage will probably make up for a nice race. The startlist is not bad with some bigger names like Garzelli, Pozzovivo, Moreno, Smyd and local hero Spilak. Wyss will aim for a top 5 as he tries to keep his Giro form until the Austria tour next month.

Stage 1

The first stage is classified as hilly but the last hill is to far from the finish to seen any attacks by the overal contenders. More a day for a surviving breakaway.

The race started very hard. There were a lot of attacks and one Geox rider was part of most. Felline got the job to get into today's break. He could establish a lead of around 1'30" together with 6 others but there would come some counter attacks. After the counters, a group of 18 riders would be in the lead with a rider from almost every team in it. That was to dangerous for Christina Watches and their leader Rasmussen so they pulled the break back.

Almost half race, a break wasn't formed yet. Two riders would then try their luck. Muraglia and Beletti are the two escapees of the day. 5 other riders would go on the counter 10 km later but they would never succeed of reaching the front.

The escapees could start today's last and toughest hill with an advantage of 6' to the pack. There, Geox tried something to bring back the escapees but they stopped when nobody helped. Grabovsky would try to make the jump from the chasers to the front but would never succeed.

The Ukrainian would never reach the front so the two were going to sprint for the win. Bailetti played it very smart and stopped relaying with 5 km to go. He would then easily jump away from Muraglia in the last km to take a nice victory. Grabovsky was caught by the pack under the red banner and Pietropolli lead the peloton in 3' behind the escapees.

Stage 2

The second stage was also hilly but the last climb of today would only be 15 km from the finish. With only a descent after, attacks could be succesfull today.

A 12 men break got formed on the first part of the race. Most important name was certainly Simon Spilak. The Slovenian was seen as one of the favourites for the overal but since he is in the break, he probably knows his form isn't good enough to get a good result.

They would start the last climb with an advantage of around 2' to the pack were the chase was mainly organised by Acqua e Sapone and the De Rosa team of leader Bailetti.

The first part of the last hill was very steep and some attacks came from the favourites. Garzelli, Rebellin, Zaballa and Efimkin seemed the strongest and were the first to bridge the gap to the escapees. But their advantage wasn't very big so the next group with Wyss could come back on the flatter parts before the descent.

That meaned the stage would be decided in a sprint of around 25 men, both good puncheurs as survivors of the long break. The sprint was an easy way for Pietropolli to take a stage win. The Italian takes over the lead from Bailetti who wasn't in the first group. Wyss finished 5th.

Stage 3

With no gaps been made yet between the favourites, the 3rd stage looked to change that. The final climb is very hard so succesfull attacks are expected.

A long break never established. Some tougher climbs in the middle of the day were the point were Gusev attacked. He would ride solo in the lead for a good part of the day followed by Agnoli who attacked a little later.

The pack would start the last ascent with a gap of 2'30" to Gusev. Nothing on those tough 13 km to the finish. The 10 km mark would be the first sign for some attacks. Rasmussen and Pozzovivo both lost time yesterday so they attacked from far out to hopefully get a stage win. They could create a 30" gap but when Garzelli made a jump, the reaction's from the group would not come later.

Under the 5 km banner, everything was back together again. Gusev was caught just as Garzelli, Rasmussen and Pozzovivo. Garzelli looked very strong as he would try again with 4 km to go. For good it looked. Behind him a chasing group got formed led by Wyss. He was always followed by Garzelli's teammate Miholjevic who did good work for his captian.

Garzelli would take the win more as 30" in front of Wyss who outsprinted Miholjevic for third. Pietropolli finish 30" later. Garzelli is now the new leader in front of Wyss and Pietropolli.

Stage 4

The last stage was flat and wasn't really exciting. The stage would ofcourse end in a mass sprint so the early escapees were caught with 15 km to go. Some sprint trains would get formed and Wyss decided to follow the Lampre train for Pietropolli. A good decision as this train was clearly the strongest and he was the only one in Pietropolli's wheel.

But when Perez, a leadout for Lampre, fell back with 1.5 km to go, he only let space for Kostyuk and Pietropolli to pass him. Wyss lost al his speed and could only sprint to a 9th place. Pietropolli took another win and with the 20" he gained, he passed Wyss to become 2nd in the overal. Very disappointing as Wyss was in a very good position in the Italian his wheel.

A good race by Wyss. Too bad he got stuck and lost his 2nd in the last stage but he still finished on the podium and took home the young rider's jersey. Not bad.

Sastre is normally not bad on these hilly TT's but he is taking it easy after the Giro so his form isn't great. A top 10 would be a good result. Top favourite is clearly Contador but maybe one of the Sanchez's (LL and Sammy) can beat him.

i1222.photobucket.com/albums/dd485/spilak25/nc4.jpg

Sastre was indeed our best rider today but his time wasn't great. He finishes 12th almost 3' behind the winner.
i1222.photobucket.com/albums/dd485/spilak25/nc3.jpg

That winner is Alberto Contador. He crushed the opposition as nr 2 Plaza is 1'30" behind. Sammy Sanchez is third.

We don't have any good Italian TT'ers in our team but the opponents except of Nibali, Scarponi and Malori are rather weak so again maybe a top 10 is possilbe.

i1222.photobucket.com/albums/dd485/spilak25/nc7.jpg

Fabio Felline is not that good but he was feeling very strong today. He rode a very good TT and finished 8th. A good result for him.
i1222.photobucket.com/albums/dd485/spilak25/nc6.jpg

The fight for the win was a very close battle between the 3 top favourites. There was only 13" between them but Scarponi took the win in front of Nibali and Malori.

Menchov is normally the best Russian TT'er but his form isn't good as he is resting after his great Giro. Let's hope he can handle the good time trialers from Katusha.

i1222.photobucket.com/albums/dd485/spilak25/nc10.jpg

He couldn't. He hasn't trained much since the Giro so his form is weak and so is his result. He finishes 6th. Still a bit disappointing for him.
i1222.photobucket.com/albums/dd485/spilak25/nc9.jpg

The win was for Katusha's strongest time trialer. Vladimir Karpets will wear the national jersey next year.

A very hilly parcours will certainly suit Wyss to get a good result. His opponents are Cancellara, Albasini, Elmiger and a bunch of BMC riders (Frank, Morabito, Tschop).

i1222.photobucket.com/albums/dd485/spilak25/swiss4.jpg

A break of 4 riders got formed early. Two riders were fairly good puncheurs: Hollenstein and Dietziker. They had a gap of 5' when Wyss made a move from the pack with 50 km to go. He was the first to close the gap to the escapees with 25 km to go but 5 km late, the other favourites would connect to. A leading group of 8 was then formed. Cancellara, Albasini, Tschopp, Morabito, Wyss, Elmiger, Bertogliati and Hollenstein would fight for the win.
i1222.photobucket.com/albums/dd485/spilak25/swiss7.jpg

Wyss was one of the first to lose contact with that group. He would finish 7th on the day. At the front, 4 riders could gap the others on the last climb and were going to sprint for the win. Cancellara, Albasini, Elmiger and Tschopp were fighting for the win. Spartacus was the first to fall back and for long it looked like Tschopp would win but he lost his speed after the last turn. Albasini then could easily pass him to take a well deserved win.

i1222.photobucket.com/albums/dd485/spilak25/flags/RUS.pngChempionat Rosssiii1222.photobucket.com/albums/dd485/spilak25/flags/RUS.png

i1222.photobucket.com/albums/dd485/spilak25/russia1.jpg

The Russian championship will be hard. Menchov doesn't have a good condition and Katusha will probably be tough to beat so Kozontchuk will try to get in the break to surprise the Katusha team.

i1222.photobucket.com/albums/dd485/spilak25/russia2.jpg

Kozontchuk did as expected and got in the break together with Borisov, Mokrov, Frolov and Rybakov. Katusha controlled the pace and they were caught with 30 km to go. A 12 men group then got formed with next to 9 Katusha's the two Efemkin brothers and Menchov.
i1222.photobucket.com/albums/dd485/spilak25/russia3.jpg

Three Katusha's would then make seperate attacks and come together in a 3 men leading group. It looks like Silin, Karpets and Ivanov will fight for the win as the 3 non Katusha's in the back don't want to chase with 6 others on their wheels.
i1222.photobucket.com/albums/dd485/spilak25/russia4.jpg

The sprint at the front is easily won the sprint. He takes his 7th (!) Russian championship. He finished in front of his teammates Karpets, Silin, Brutt and Ignatiev. Menchov finished as 9th.

i1222.photobucket.com/albums/dd485/spilak25/spain1.jpg

Who becomes the Spanish Champion will be decided on a course with 3 ascents of a very tough climb. Since guys like Contador and Sanchez willb e hard to beat, we will try to make an early attack with one of our better riders.

i1222.photobucket.com/albums/dd485/spilak25/spain2.jpg

Valls did what he was asked to do and got into today's break. Some other good punchuers there were Del Nero, Palomares and Sanchez Pimienta. Other riders in the break of the day ride for weaker teams and are not that good. The first ascent of the climb was used by Moreno, Zaballa and Garate to make the jump from the pack to the escapees. They then made a high pace on the second ascent and only some riders were able to follow. Valls, Sanchez, Del Nero and surprisinly Cabedo would ride to the foot of the last climb together. They would start it with an advantage of 2' to the pack.
i1222.photobucket.com/albums/dd485/spilak25/spain3.jpg

Moreno made a hard pace on the last climb and only Zaballa and Garate were able to follow. Behind them, a favourite's group got formed but they could never close the 1' gap to the leaders. Valls was the only Geox rider remaining in that group. The three started the descent with an advantage of 1' and it looked like they would sprint for the win.
i1222.photobucket.com/albums/dd485/spilak25/spain4.jpg

Garate had to let the others go with 2 km to go. He would finish 3rd. Moreno had to start the sprint in the lead and so Zaballa could easily overtake him in the last km. Valls was the first Geox rider to finish in 20th place right behind the favourites group.

i1222.photobucket.com/albums/dd485/spilak25/flags/ITA.pngCampionato di Italiai1222.photobucket.com/albums/dd485/spilak25/flags/ITA.png

i1222.photobucket.com/albums/dd485/spilak25/italia1.jpg

The Italian championship will probably decided with an attack on the last ascent of the hill on the route or in the sprint. Felline did good in the TT so he is our leader here.

i1222.photobucket.com/albums/dd485/spilak25/italia2.jpg

The 2nd ascent of the hill is used by Cheula and Felline to make the jump from the pack to an already strong breakaway group. Some other good riders at the front are Santambrogio, Reda and Noe. But Lampre doesn't want to let them go and catches them at the foot of the penultimate hill.
i1222.photobucket.com/albums/dd485/spilak25/italia3.jpg

Garzelli and Marcato tried to jump away at the second ascent. But Lampre continued riding very hard and brought them back very fast. They made a good pace on the last hill and nobody even tought about attacking. They then made a good lead-out for Petacchi with Pietropolli and Gavazzi in front of him. Fellini is well positioned behind Oss and Ginanni.
i1222.photobucket.com/albums/dd485/spilak25/italia4.jpg

Petacchi only had to finish this fantastic teamwork to take a very nice win. He will show his national jersey in the sprints next year. Felline was a bit tired from his earlier attack and lost his speed in the last metres. He finished as 15th. Not bad.

The month is ofcourse dominated by the Tour de France. We had the plan to participate in Austria but the organisers rejected our Registration. We were thinking about riding in China then but decided against it as the route isn't intresting.

Transfer News

1 July is the sign for riders with ending contracts to sign with other teams. Here is a preview of the transfer period.

Team Geox:

4 riders have already extended their contract. Pelucchi, Corti, Valls and Menchov will continue riding for our team. The team management has doubts about one rider. They are not sure yet if they will keep Kozontchuk. Two riders will certainly leave the team at the end of the year. Blanco and Giannetti don't fit in the futere plans o the team.

Most notable riders with ending contract:

Michele Scarponi
Roman Kreuziger
Chris Horner
Jean-Christophe Peraud
Nick Nuyens
Jose Joaquin Rojas Gil
Heinrich Haussler
Peter Velits
Steven Kruiswijk
Janez Brajkovic
Kanstantin Sioutsou
Daniele Bennati
Thomas de Gendt

Domenico Pozzovivo
Grega Bole
Tiago Machado
Matthias Frank
Rui Costa
Sergio Pardilla
Simone Stortoni
Michael Schär
Elia Favili
Enrico Magazzini

With two riders leaving the team after the season, we have 19 riders on next year's roster. We want to have around 25 riders next year so we are thinking about siginig 5 new riders and give 2 U23 riders a chance. Important to know is that our sponsor want's a better Italian rider in our team but we don't think about signing Scarponi or Bennati. Even a guy like Pozzovivo would be good.

The first 10 days are over. The first week was dominated by two riders. Gilbert won two stages and Tyler Farrar four. The TTT was won by the Leopard team of the Schleck brothers who so took an advantage on their opponents. The hilly sages made two riders jump to the front. Cadel Evans and Frank Schleck were the strongest riders so far this Tour. Andy is not far off yet but top favourite Contador is already more as 3' behind. He can still come back in the very hard last part of the tour though.

No NC's, but where is cav in the tour only Farrar?

Spilak23
THanks Alexanderlens and baia.

FuglsangxTH3, I was also surprised to see Farrar always winning. Cav is participating but he hasn't race a preparation race (dauphine, Suisse) and he always finished around the 7th place in the sprints. He can maybe get a victory in the champs elysees.

FreitasPCM
Simmed results are always predictable... Pfft And what annoys me is that in the final week, there's always a breakaway succeeding.

dienblad
Why does Cav win so little in PCM, at least in my games???? Ow well,

Try to sign Pozzovivo, Bole and Kruiswijk!
imageshack.us/a/img171/3023/petronasmesig2.png

FuglsangxTH3
Ok, but I think kruiswijk Brajkovic and Pozzovio( if it is financilly possible ) are good riders

Avin Wargunnson
I would go for Pozzo,Velits (or Kruijswik) and Bole Smile
Not the best showings in NC's, but there was always some opponent team controlling the race.
I'll be back

Brixia Tour

The Brixia Tour is a 5 day stage race in the Piemonte region of Italy. Two mountain top finishes will decide for the overal. Strong teams are needed as the race starts with a TTT. The two other stages are for sprinters or escapees. Earlier winners are Di Luca, Rebellin, Astarloa and Evans so it's not an easy or small race.

A strong startlist with some strong teams. Quick-step and Vacansoleil have very strong teams with De Weert, Cataldo, Poels, Ruigh and De Gendt. They all can take the overal win if they have a good form. Other favourites are Smyd, Garzelli and Efimkin.

Our Team:
i1222.photobucket.com/albums/dd485/spilak25/brixia2.jpgx

We bring a team led by Wyss. He and Brändle keeped up their form from the Giro for the tour of Austria but our registration was refused so they hope for a good result here. Florencio and Blanco are here to prepare themselves for their goals next month. The Italian classics and the Volta a Portugal respectively. Felline, Cheula and Duran will get a chance to maybe go in a break while Kozontchuk is here as a pure domestique.
