What a great champion is Gilbert, unfortunatly in last years he lost a bit of his puncher skills to make a kind of difference on Milano-Sanremo, in last 3 years never won a sprinter in via Roma, and with those kind of actions a younger Gilbert could really fit into, maybe it's to late for an en plein.
btw his Roubaix victory states that there aren't races for pure cobblers anymore imo. The bike technologies now is probably too helpful and allow much more riders to be competitive on such terrain

Yes exactly. I have the same feeling, that definition cobbles specialist is no longer applicable since there can win a lot of riders.
Gilbert would need to improve his acceleration to win M-R but I do not see it real. But wait Nibali won M-R and his acceleration is not certainly special/exceptional
Everybody has a plan until they get punched in the mouth.

Nibali had his mad descending skills though. Gilbert can still do a Tchmil I guess, but attacking on the Poggio won't work for him anymore.
2011 should have been his year, but he got beaten by a fat drunk.
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

Now obviously age plays a factor, but do not discount just how much of an impact Phil Gil's training program has had on his evolution as a cyclist leading up to his Paris Roubaix victory. A lowered emphasis on aspects like explosive power/sprints and increased emphasis on aspects like sustained power output and other rouleur-like traits in training is going to have an effect on his physiological capabilities, such as his rate of force development (acceleration).
Be pretty improbable for Phil Gil to get back to his 2011 capabilities as a Puncheur due to age. However, having now won Paris Roubaix there is no reason he couldn't restructure his training program to target all the phyiological adaptions deemed necessary for the best chance of success in Milan San Remo. Whether it will be enough remains to be seen...

Given age and the type of rider that Gilbert has become, the only way I can see him winning MSR is from a small group how Alaphilippe won this year which means outsprinting his opponents but personally I can't see him winning MSR.

Can we start discussing them Hills or them Ardennes and how Amstel's startlist is golden? Should be an open race and I hope to see many attacks (*cof* van der Poel *cof*) from far to shake it up a bit. |

mmh, not sure if long range attacks will work also on Ardennes, imo VdP can fairly win with more conservative strategy
