Weird race this one, 16 riders broke away around 15-20km into the race and well.. They stayed away
After that Mike was always going to be a winner of that. Best by far. Very promising rider.
Although I see now why especially cobbled U23s races like Roubaix are not great at actually showing future cobblers. Many riders with a result today have no special talent on cobbles lol And Ronde U23 shows more hilly talent and then sprinting rather than actual cobbled one too.

After a promising 4th place in the opening Prologue of Ster ZlM Toer (2.1, won by Gilbert). Steven Lammertink takes the Dutch U23 title by quite a margin.
Besides that Stefan Küng put in a very promising ride in the Elite Suisse I.T.T. champs (results found in the National Championships topic), despite being a u23 rider.

Few riders from U23 catching attention in NT's. Ryan Mullen one being double Irish Champion, will be one of the favs for this year Worlds ITT U23.
The other is Gregor Mühlberger who looks one of the biggest talent around at the minute. Finished twice second, both TT and RR, to Brandle by less than a minute and to Zoild on MTF.
He looks a proper stage racer. This year he already won a prologue, a Italian classic, a 30km ITT in which he won the race overall and won a stage and came 2nd to Konrad only in Oberösterreichrundfahrt. Some absoultely terrific results.
Talking about potential Avenir winners, Verveake is showing amazing climbing form, best so far this year. 2 climbing races in U23 and 2 won. The latest one being Tour des Pays de Savoie, in the 5 stages his worst finish was 4th..
If Benoot goes to Avenir as his helper, I can't see any other winner. Konrad and Herklotz will be great competition, but Louis looks amazing so far.

Mullen won't ride the U23 road euros, slightly surprisingly. Could have done very well in both categories. Saving himself for the U23 track euros, aiming for a win in the individual pursuit.

Not really surprising, Küng wins the U23 European ITT Championships. No.2 Martinelli will ride as a trainee for Team Sky starting in August.

Does anyone know why the young Belgian TT guys weren't there? I would have thought one or two of them would go in as favourites.

And Küng also wins the road race in a group sprint.

Not a group sprint, first 3 got a gap in the last lap and they were caught only in the final meters..
Küng is incredibly talented |

The hilly prologue in the Giro della Valle D'Aosta Mont Blanc is won by the Colombian rider Ochoa.

Nice to see Ochoa getting a win there, apart from the National U23 RR title his first significant win.
Apparently quite a talent, though more of a puncheur than a typical Colombian pure mountain climber, as highlighted by the hilly nature of the prologue.
Spoiler Definitely no ManGame bias in this post

Also saw that today. The columbians are so damn talented right now.
Im not following U23 and I do not have that much knowledge about the hottest talents at the moment. Does Spain have a big talent, GC-wise? All i know of is Ruben Fernandez, but he havent looked that great, has me? All of them are getting old (Valverde, Purito, Samuel and Contador) and just wondering who the new guys should be. |

I think spanish youngsters are usually taking part in their local races, instead of facing international opposition. So because of that, they can look like bigger surprises when they emerge as big talents in the pros. Not sure if there are sdome potential stars coming, but anything else would surprise me.

I suspect that a couple of them are already pro, like:
Mikel Landa (24)
Rafael Valls (26)
Jesus Herrada (23)
Ion Izagirre (25)
Carlos Verona (21)
They might not be the next Alberto Contadors or Alejandro Valverdes, but they will all become pretty decent riders imo.

Thanks for your input!
I followed Landa since 2011 in his Euskaltel-days where he seemed like a monster talent. I expected a little more of him in the Giro, but hopefully he will ride the Vuelta this year and prove me wrong. I see him as a Mikel-nieve type, maybe better.
Valls, I dont think you can consider him a talent. He seemed as Luigi said too have reached his peak.
Jesus Herrada is a rider that I follow closely. Nice to see him yesterday and I really look forward to see him in the mountains. He won a stage in Tour du Sud and looks promising, indeed. I dont know exactly how good of a pure climber he is, but he is young and has a lot of room of improvements.
Ion Izaguirre is a very good allround type and the type of guy who can become a really good helper for Quintana in all terrains. Capable of riding top-10 (and maybe winning in the future) 1 week races like Romandie, Paris-Nice etc and winning from strong breaks. Fine talent, but not a GC rider in 3 weeks. I see him as a little lesser LLS.
Carlos Verona is the only guy who I dont really know. |
